Sapporo (札幌), pop. 1,840,000, the capital of Hokkaido, Japan’s
northernmost prefecture, functions efficiently as the hub of the
island in the fields of politics, culture and economy. Located in
the scenic central part of Hokkaido, the nation’s 5th largest city
also boasts an abundance of tourist attractions, enticing millions
of visitors all year round. Sapporo is a relatively newly developed
city. Its full-scale development, along with that of the vast island
itself, began in 1869 when the Japanese government established
the Hokkaido Colonization Office.
Unlike any other city in Japan, it forms a vast green land of many

parks. The streets are laid out in checkerboard fashion and are
also named and numbered consecutively. Sapporo's lifestyle is
also very unique, as the citizenry evokes a pioneer spirit, rather
than being bound by centuries of tradition.
Sapporo is the air gateway to Hokkaido, a starting point for a
tour of the island. With its two airports––New Chitose and
Okadama ––the capital city is conveniently connected to
Honshu, the main island, as well as to the main cities of
Hokkaido. The city is also linked with Hakodate, a major gateway to Hokkaido, by limited express trains that take about 3
hrs. 30 min.

to train youths for the colonization and development of
Hokkaido. Dr. William S. Clark was invited from the United
States by the Japanese Government to teach there for a year.
His bust on the campus of the Agriculture Faculty of the
University on which are inscribed his final parting words, “Boys,
be ambitious!”
2 Botanical Gardens (北大植物園) of the Faculty of Agriculture, Hokkaido University, lies just minutes from the

National Important Property.
4 Clock Tower (時計台), adjacent to the 84 m-high City Hall,
400 m south of Sapporo Sta., is the only remaining Russian-style
structure in the city, serving as a symbol of its history. This timehonored building, built in 1878, was once the military exercise
hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College, the predecessor of
Hokkaido University. The clock tower, which caps the structure,
has continued to chime the hour since 1881, hence the name of
the building. It is registered as a National Important Property.

falls on national holiday.) Admission: ¥200.
5 Odori Park (大通公園), 10-min. walk from Sapporo Sta., is a

oasis for the citizens. At the eastern end of the park is a TV
tower that has an observation platform 90 m above the base,

Museum. The Sapporo Snow Festival is held at the park early in
Feb., turning it into a wonderland featuring hundreds of snow
and ice sculptures made by volunteers and amateur artists.

Subway Odori Sta., is an arcade extending eight blocks from east
to west, with about 200 gaily decorated shops.
7 Nakajima Park (中島公園), 2.5 km south of Sapporo Sta., or

Sports Center, Japanese garden, and other facilities. It also contains
two Important Cultural Properties. One is a teahouse called
SAPPORO and SHIKOTSU-TOYA NATIONAL PARK
“Hasso-an,” which was originally built in the 17th century by
Enshu Kobori, noted master of the tea ceremony, and the other is
a guest house named “Hoheikan,” which was once used to
receive Imperial Family members and other distinguished guests.
8 Sapporo Beer Brewery (サッポロビール工場及び博物館), 10
min. by bus from Sapporo Sta., 1.7 km east of Sapporo Sta., is Japan's
first beer brewery, set up in 1878. It is open to visitors for a
look around. A group of 10 or more visitors must make a reservation. Tel. (011) 731-4368. Open: 9:00-17:00 (enter till 15:40).

nightclubs.

Aurora Town. Pole Town stretches 400 m from Minami-Odori
to Susukino, while Aurora Town extends 300 m from OdoriSanchome to the TV Tower.
Okurayama Jump Hill (大倉山シャンツェ), 5.5 km west of
Sapporo Sta., is a 90-m jump hill commanding a panoramic view
of the city and its surroundings, is accessible in 8 min. by bus
from Subway Maruyamakoen Sta. Built adjacent to this ski jump
is the Winter Sports Museum, which exhibits historical records
of the Olympic Games and other winter competitions. In this
museum there are also various displays including try-out booths.
Mt. Moiwa (藻岩山), 4.7 km southwest of Sapporo Sta., is an
ideal hiking and skiing ground for the citizens. The summit,
accessible by ropeway from streetcar Ropeway Iriguchi Sta.;
¥600 (one-way) and ¥1,100 (round-trip), commands a panoramic
view of Sapporo and the vicinity.
Teine Olympia Ski Ground (テイネオリンピア), 1 hr. by bus
from Sapporo Sta. or 25 min. by bus from Subway Miyanosawa
Sta., is situated halfway up Mt. Teine, alt. 1,023 m, and is noted as
the birthplace of alpine skiing in Hokkaido.

Jozankei Spa (定山渓温泉), 1 hr. by bus from Sapporo Sta., is
located on the upper reaches of Toyohira River, hemmed in
between the high cliffs. Because of the superb natural scenery
surrounding it and a rich yield of hot spring water gushing out at
many places, the spa is used for the recreation and relaxation of
Sapporo’s citizens. It teems with ryokan or Japanese-style inns,
restaurants and souvenir shops, yearly attracting hundreds of
thousands of visitors. It also serves as the base for trips to scenic
Lake Toya and other tourist spots in southern Hokkaido.

Lake Toya (洞爺湖), a caldera lake, about 7 km northeast of
Toya Sta., is circular with a maximum depth of 179 m. It abounds
with fish (especially kakanee salmon) and has a magnificent view.
The 4 various-sized islets called Nakanoshima are most picturesque. In general, the climate around this place is mild and the
lake never freezes over. The tourist season continues from Apr.
until the end of Oct. Toyako Spa, with abundant hot water, is
known as one of the largest hot-spring resorts in Hokkaido.
Toyako Spa is also the largest base for accommodation facilities
in the area. In front of the Spa is Mt. Usu which billows with
smoke.
Noboribetsu Spa (登別温泉) is considered to be one of the
most preeminent hot-spring resorts in Japan. It lies at an altitude
of 200 m and is surrounded by mountains on all sides. There are
11 springs of sulfur, alum, radium, etc. which gush out of
Jigokudani, a site where a volcanic eruption once took place.
Jigokudani is within easy walking distance from hotels in the
crowded quarter. Dai-ichi Takimotokan (a Japanese-style hotel)
features a mammoth-bath accommodating 1,000 people, with 7
varied springs.
Mt. Shihorei (another name is Mt. Kuma—四方嶺またはクマ
山), alt. 560 m, can be ascended by a ropeway from Noboribetsu
Spa to the summit where there is a Bear Ranch, sanctuary for
some 160 brown bears. (open daily throughout the year; ¥2,520
for the entrance fee and round-trip ropeway ticket).
Ainu Village in Shiraoi (白老ポロトコタン), by the side of
Lake Poroto, where the Ainu people once lived, has been
restored. For preservation of word-of-mouth traditions of the
Ainu culture, the site contains an Ainu Museum and replicas of
many of their houses. Tourists are able to observe dancing, hear
songs and witness the demonstrations of various technical arts
handed down by Ainu ancestors. The site, including the Ainu
Museum, opens daily. 8:00–17:00 (Apr.–Oct.), 8:30–16:30
(Nov.–Mar.). Closed Dec. 30–Jan. 5. Admission: ¥683.
The Shiraoi Dosanko Minato Matsuri Festival, annually held at
the end of Jul. to early Aug., is highlighted by a display of fireworks as well as a parade of yukata-clad town people enjoying
folk dances.
Lake Shikotsu (支笏湖), a volcanic caldera lake, is surrounded
by mountain peaks—Mt. Eniwadake on its north and Mt.
Tarumae and Mt. Fuppushi on its south—which are beautifully
reflected in the lake. One can enjoy sightseeing by boat on the
lake available daily from around early Apr.–early Nov. Boats
going halfway around: ¥930, 30-min. ride; Cruise-boats: 4 runs
daily, ¥1,580, 1 hr. 30-min. ride. There are 3 camping grounds, 5
ryokan, a youth hostel and some minshuku on the eastern shore
of the lake. A rent-a-bicycle service is also available and is operated by the ryokan situated along the lake. As of Oct. 2002, the
famous Moss-draped cave is off limits in danger of collapsing.
