I am very happy that these two dojos in Japan and Hawaii are having this joint seminar and demonstration in Honolulu, Hawaii. Igarashi Kazuo Shihan first encountered Aikido when he entered Meiji University. He received instruction from Kobayashi Yasuo Shihan at the university and also from the 2nd Doshu, Ueshiba Kisshomaru at the Hombu Dojo. He joined Kobayashi Dojo’s cadre of instructors after graduation to further explore and go into a deep study of Aikido. Thirty years ago, he founded his own dojo in Hashimoto, Kanagawa and has been actively teaching locally and abroad ever since. Robert Kubo Shihan started Aikido soon after it was introduced in Hawaii. He received instruction from Ueshiba Morihei when the founder visited Hawii in 1961, and also from Ueshiba Kisshomaru when the 2nd Doshu visited in 1963. He founded Kailua Dojo half a century ago to further his own understanding, and has been untiring in his efforts to promote Aikido in Hawaii. These two dojos have cultivated their relationship and encouraged each other in their studies. I think we can safely say that this joint celebration of their 30th and 50th anniversaries is a concrete manifestation of the spirit of harmony in Aikido. Aikido was founded by Morihei Ueshiba and in 1950, the 2nd Doshu Ueshiba Kisshomaru opened its doors to a wider audience. People from all over the world, in 95 countries have embraced the founder’s philosophy of this “spirit of harmony”, and that circle continues to expand. We can raise many reasons for the spread of Aikido, but without a doubt, the efforts of dojos like Aikido Igarashi Dojo and Hawaii Kailua Dojo have been key factors contributing to this expansion. I hope that both dojos will hold in their hearts the ideals espoused by the founder: “the spirit of harmony” and “everyday practice”. I hope that both dojos will recognize the accumulated history of the art, and that the bonds between members of both dojos will be strengthened by the illuminating traditions established by both Igarashi and Kubo shihan. This is a story I have repeated for 50 years. I was just a Shodan when my Sensei Yukiso Yamamoto made a statement that was a directive not to be questioned. There were two instructors, no mats, and no students. Today, Kailua Aikido Club has grown to be a strong organization with affiliations throughout the world. We have had our trials and tribulations as any other organization but we have persevered and we have survived. In fact, we have flourished. It has been through the support of our members, our instructors, families and friends that we are able to celebrate this 50th Anniversary of Kailua Aikido Club. ハワイ合気道インターナショナル 田舎道場長 ロバート久保 「久保君、ウィンドワードに合気道道場 が必要だ」と山本先生に言われたのは５０年前の １９６３年でした。その時は、私はまだ初段で した。先生の一言に逆らうことはできません。早 速、合気道カイルア道場を開設しました。しかし 当時、指導員二人、マット無し、門下生がいない 状態でした。 現在、カイルア道場は、世界中に関係道 場を持つ大きな道場になりました。他の皆様と同 じように大変なことは多々ありましたが、くじけ ることなく現在に至っています。事実、今も発展 を続けています。道場生、指導員、家族と友達の 支えがあって、カイルア道場は５０周年を祝うこ とができました。 合気道開祖植芝盛平翁先生が、日本から ハワイまで「銀の橋」を架けたくださったお陰 で、ハワイに合気道の理念と技が伝わりました。 ２代道主植芝吉祥丸先生は、基本の大切さを熱心 に伝え、合気道はハワイのみならず世界中に広ま りました。また、現道主植芝守央先生が道統を継 ぎ、指導してくださっているお陰で、ハワイの合 気道も錬磨され発展を続けています。 「銀の橋」をわたる旅を続けているカイ ルア道場に支援を寄せて下さる皆様に感謝してお ります。植芝家が創始した合気道の哲理・技を守 るようにカイルア道場は、今後も努力してまいり ます。 この人生に新しい友、絆、経験、そして 心一杯の喜びがありました。この日に私の弟、五 十嵐先生の３０周年も一緒にお祝いできるのは光 栄です。一緒に笑って、泣いて、成長して、色々 な思い出があります。最愛の末弟、稲葉泰久を亡 くしたことは寂しいですが、彼は太陽になって私 たちと一緒に、この喜びを噛みしめていると信じ ております。 O’Sensei’s belief of spanning the ocean from Japan to Hawaii on his “silver bridge” has given us his gift of the arts and philosophy of Aikido. Doshu Kisshomaru Ueshiba’s drive for perfection and his relentless pursuit and passion for teaching the basic movements of Aikido has spread through Hawaii and throughout the world. And it is through Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba’s continued teachings that Aikido in Hawaii has been polished and continues to be practiced and developed. “Kubo-kun, we need an Aikido club in the Windward area.” This was the beginning of Kailua Aikido Club in 1963. I humbly express my thanks to everyone who has helped Kailua Aikido Club continue its journey on the “silver bridge”. Kailua Aikido Club will continue to pursue its efforts to maintain the standards and dignity set forth by the Ueshiba family. This has been a personal journey that has brought me many new friendships, relationships, experiences, and so much joy. To be able to share this occasion with my brother Igarashi Sensei, on his 30th Anniversary, is a special honor for me. We have grown together over the years, developing cherished memories. We have laughed, cried, and grown together. We miss our y ounger brother, Inaba Yasuo Sensei, but we know he is here with us in spirit. 30th & 50th Anniversary Celebration | 5 A Tribute to Kubo Sensei Kailua Aikido Club - Since 1963 6 | 30th & 50th Anniversary Celebration 30th & 50th Anniversary Celebration | 7 8 | 30th & 50th Anniversary Celebration Igarashi Sensei 7th Dan Aikido Igarashi Dojo ３０年前は、橋本駅も平屋で出口は、北口のみという 小さな駅舎でした。横浜線もまだ単線で、１時間に電車も１本 という時間帯もありました。そして自宅の周りには畑・田んぼ が多く、カエルの鳴き声が騒々しく、トンボ・蝉も良く飛んで いました。また、近くには小川も流れ、子ども達にとって自然 に囲まれた素晴らしいところでした。 しかし３０年後の今、京王線が橋本まで乗入れ、新宿 まで一本で行くことができるようになり、駅舎は駅ビルにな り、駅前は高層ビルが立ち並び、見間違えるような変貌を遂げ ました。また、一昨年には相模原市も人口の増加に伴い「政令 指定都市」となり、以前は田舎町「橋本」であった住所も「緑 区橋本」となりました。さらに近い将来、ＪＲ東海リニア新幹 線の中間駅として橋本に駅ができるという、大都会になったよ うな気持ちになります。 五十嵐道場は、道主植芝守央先生、小林保雄先生を始 め合気道関係者の皆様の温かいご指導・ご支援により、相模原 市に道場を開設してより３０周年を迎えます。“合気道指導の プロになろう！”、“自分の道場を持とう！”、などという強 い意志を持っての合気道人生ではありませんでしたが、私の周 りのいろいろな環境が、今日の私を作ってくださいました。肩 肘張っての事ではなかったのが良かったようです。ただただ感 謝の気持ちでいっぱいです また、長年にわたり交流があり、義兄弟としてご交誼 をいただいておりますハワイのロバート久保先生の「カイルア 合気道クラブ」、通称「ハワイ田舎道場」が創立５０周年を迎 えます。ハワイ・ホノルル・ワイキキで記念講習会・祝賀会を 合同で開催できますこと喜びでいっぱいです。記念誌には、道 主植芝守央先生を始め、多くの皆様から「お祝いのお言葉」を いただきました。有難うございました。 ハワイという日本から遠い開催地にもかかわらず、記 念講習会講師の小林保雄先生、荒井俊幸先生、白川勝敏先生、 追分拓哉先生、忍山東先生、皆様は奥さまご同伴で参加してく ださいました。また、日本国内から、アジア、ヨーロッパ、北 米、南米からも多くの合気道の友が参加してくださいました。 このように盛大に、「合気道五十嵐道場創立３０周 年、合気道ハワイ・インターナショナル・カイルア道場創立５ ０周年」が開催でき、ロバート久保先生と共に大変感激してお ります。これで満足することなく、さらに精進して参ります。 今後ともご指導・ご鞭撻をよろしくお願い申し上げます。 本日は、誠に有難うございます。 30 years ago, Hashimoto station was a small single-story train station with a single entrance on the north. The Yokohama line was a single track line with only one train operating per hour. Around the house, there were orchards and rice fields, the croaking of the frogs could get very noisy and dragonflies would be flitting about. There was also a brook flowing nearby; it was a wonderful place where the kids could grow, surrounded by nature. Now, 30 years later, one can go from Hashimoto to Shinjuku with one train ride on the Keiō line; the train station has become a multi-story facility and there are several high-rise buildings in its vicinity. Everything has drastically changed. Two years ago, with its increasing population, by government ordinance, Sagamihara City has become a “designated city”; and the once rural area of “Hashimoto” is now known as “Midori-ku Hashimoto”. In the near future, the JR Tōkai Linear Shinkansen will have Hashimoto as one of its stops; I feel that Hashimoto has truly become a metropolis. Under the auspices of Dōshu Ueshiba Moriteru Sensei and Kobayashi Yasuo Sensei; and all the Aikido members who have helped and supported us, we are now entering the 30th year since the establishment of our dōjō in Sagamihara City. I cannot say that I harbored strong desires like, “I will be a professional Aikido instructor!” or “I will build my own dojo!” in my Aikido life. It was all the various influences in my environment that have made me the person I am today. It seems that not being so prideful has worked for me. I am simply filled with gratitude to everyone who has helped me. Also, Robert Kubo Sensei, my “blood brother”, whom I have known for a long time, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of his Kailua Aikido Club, more commonly known as the “Hawaii Inaka Dojo”. I am very happy that we can have this joint seminar and party in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii. In the anniversary booklet, we have received many congratulatory letters beginning with Dōshu Ueshiba Moriteru, and many others. Thank you for your words of felicitation. Although Hawaii is very far from Japan, we have several shihans leading the seminars, beginning with Kobayashi Yasuo Sensei, Arai Toshiyuki Sensei, Shirakawa Katsutoshi Sensei, Oiwake Takuya Sensei and Oshiyama Azuma Sensei. We also have many other Aikido friends from Japan, Asia, Europe, North America and South America celebrating with us. Robert Kubo Sensei and I are very pleased and touched, that you have made Aikido Igarashi Dojo 30th anniversary and Aikido Hawaii International Kailua Dojo 50th anniversary, such a grand event. Rest assured that we will not rest on our laurels, but continue moving ever forward and upward. We hope that you will continue instructing and disciplining us. Asai Sensei Seminar, May 1979, Spockholm, Sweden 30th & 50th Anniversary Celebration | 11 Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Inaka Doj 田舎道場５０周年、五十嵐道場3０周年記念を祝して Congratulations to Inaka Dojo on its 50th anniversary and to Igarashi Dojo on its 30th anniversary. It is wonderful to have this joint celebration in Waikiki, Hawaii with Robert Kubo Shihan. In April of 1969, “to spread Aikido to as many people as possible,” as my guideline, I started Aikido Kobayashi Dojo in my home in Kodaira, Tokyo. During that period, Aikido was an unknown art, and it was hard trying to make a living out of it. Igarashi Shihan was my junior in the Meiji University Aikido Club. He was so engrossed with the training that he eventually quit his fulltime job to become a live-in student at Kobayashi Dojo. Very few people came to the dojo during that period, so I had a lot of training time with my live-in students. Later, fortune smiled upon Aikido Kobayashi Dojo and we were able to have branch dojos starting with Hachioji, Motosumiyoshi and others. I was also invited to teach abroad. Igarashi Shihan was a huge help in those days. He contributed a lot to the foundation of Aikido Kobayashi Dojo as the organizer of the instructors, and I express my heartfelt gratitude. It has been 30 years since he opened Igarashi Dojo in Hashimoto, Kanagawa. He has concentrated mainly on the Kanagawa area in Japan, and travels to several countries abroad many times a year to teach. I think it is wonderful that he has contributed so much to spreading Aikido. Kobayashi Dojo has had a long-standing amicable relationship with Robert Kubo Shihan. I, and the members of Kobayashi Dojo who have joined this joint celebration in Hawaii, are honored to be with you today. I wish that this joint celebration of Inaka Dojo’s 50th anniversary and Igarashi Dojo’s 30th anniversary, with a seminar, demonstration and grand party will be a huge success. Congratulations! Aikido Kobayashi Dojo Soshihan Kobayashi Yasuo 12 | 30th & 50th Anniversary Celebration 田舎道場創立５０周年、五十嵐道場創立３ ０周年誠におめでとう御座います。姉妹道場の合気 道・ハワイ・インタナショナルのロバート久保師範 と合同でハワイ・ワイキキにおいて記念行事を開催 される事、大変すばらしい事と思います。 「一人でも多くの人に合気道を」と１９６９ 年４月、私は東京都小平市の自宅に合気道小林道場 を開設しました。当時、まだ合気道は殆ど世間に知 られてなく、合気道での生活も困難な時代でした。 五十嵐師範は、明治大学合気道部の先輩、後 輩という関係と、合気道が好きで一層の稽古修業を 求めて小林道場の内弟子として仕事を投げ打って住 込んでくれました。誰も来ない道場で内弟子だけで 稽古した時も数多く有りました。 その後、合気道小林道場は天の時、地の 利、人の和を得て八王子、元住吉道場等、多くの支 部を増やして行き、海外にも指導に行くようなりま した。その原動力に成ったのが五十嵐師範です。指 導部のまとめ役として合気道小林道場の基盤つくり に大きく貢献してくれました。心より感謝していま す。 神奈川県橋本に五十嵐道場を開かれて３０ 年、国内では神奈川県を中心に指導されると共に、 海外各国に年何回も指導に行かれ、合気道普及発展 に貢献されています。素晴らしい事だと思います。 小林道場とも交流の深いロバート久保師範と のハワイでの合同記念行事に、私と小林道場会員も 何名か参加させて頂きます。 ハワイでの「田舎道場創立５０周年・五十嵐 道場創立３０周年」の合同記念講習会、演武会そし て祝賀会が盛大に行われます事を心よりお慶び致し ます。 合気道小林道場 総師範 小林保雄 jo and the 30th anniversary of Igarashi Dojo 祝・田舎道場50周年／五十嵐道場30周年 Robert Kubo Sensei, Igarashi Kazuo Sensei, please allow me to express my heartfelt congratulations on your anniversaries. I remember the time when we had the welcome for the founder, Morihei Ueshiba O’sensei, after he visited Hawaii. Smiling, his first words to us were, “English is pretty simple… O-hi-san [Mr. Sun] is called ‘SUN’” [a play on the honorific ‘-san’ and ‘sun’]. It was quite humorous and he had all of us laughing. During that time, Hawaii was a dream world for the common people of Japan. I think that it is due to Aikido, and the work of people like Kubo Sensei, that people from around the world can come together and interact in peace and harmony. We realize the greatness of Morihei O’sensei and the outstanding organizational efforts of the 2nd Doshu, Ueshiba Kisshomaru in promoting the philosophy of Aikido. I feel that this philosophy of “world peace and unity among all people,” is perfectly demonstrated in this celebration. Kobayashi Yasuo Sensei and I are among the few remaining people who have had first-hand experience with Morihei Sensei and Kisshomaru Sensei. I am grateful to have this opportunity to practice with all of you. For me, the most important thing right now is the greatness of Morihei Sensei’s natural stance. I think I will spend the rest of my understanding the meaning of the doka, “the path to realizing the mountain echo is to stand between the linkage of heaven and earth”. “ ロバート久保先生・五十嵐和男先生、この度 の大会を心からお喜びもうしあげます 合気道開祖植芝盛平翁先生が、ハワイへ行か れた時の送迎に参加した時のことを懐かしく思い出 します。 開口一番「英語は簡単じゃのう・・・お日さ んのことをＳＵＮと言う」と、にっこり笑顔で言わ れた時は、なんともユウモラスで全員があっけに取 られました。当時の日本の庶民生活ではハワイはま さに憧れの国でした。 合気道のお陰で、こうして久保先生を始め として、世界の多くの方々と親しく交わる事が出来 るのも、合気道の根本精神のお陰と心新たに、盛平 翁先生と合気道を見事に体系化された二代道主植芝 吉祥丸先生の偉大さを思い知らされます。「世界平 和・人類和合」の精神が、この大会だけでも見事に 証明されていると感じます。 小林保雄先生と私は、盛平先生・吉祥丸先生 の味と香りを知る数少ない存在になりましたが、こ こにこうして皆様と共に稽古する機会を頂けたこと を心から感謝いたします。 私が、今一番大切に思うことは、盛平先生の 自然体のお姿の凄さです。 「天地に気結びなして中に立ち心構えは山彦 の道」この道歌の持つ意味を生涯探求してゆきたい と思います。 群馬県合気道連盟 会長 荒井 俊幸 Gunma-ken Aikido Federation Chairman Arai Toshiyuki I feel that this philosophy of “world peace and unity among all people,” is perfectly demonstrated in this celebration. 30th & 50th Anniversary Celebration | 13 Congratulatory Remarks 祝 辞 On this occasion, I would like to express my sincere congratulations to Robert Kubo Shihan on the 50th anniversary of the Hawaii Kailua Dojo and to Igarashi Kazuo Shihan on the 30th anniversary of his Dojo. I have been fortunate to get acquainted with Robert Kubo Shihan through Kobayashi Yasuo Sensei and Canada’s Inaba Yasuhisa (may God rest his soul). I have always strongly felt Kubo Shihan’s very bright personality and Hawaiian hospitality. Igarashi Shihan was present at the 11th International Aikido Congress held in Tokyo last year as the representative of the All-Japan Aikido Federation. He conducted a seminar as well as a demonstration. As his senior in Aikido, and as his senior in the Aikido Club at Meiji University, I am very proud of Igarashi Sensei’s accomplishments at that event. Kubo Shihan is in his late 70’s, I am in my early 70’s, and Igarashi Shihan is in his late 60’s. We cannot say that we are young, but we can say that our mettle will not be defeated by any young practitioner. It has been 50 years since I first arrived in Germany. It is a long road to the reach the summit of the Way. Let us all work together so that we can approach ever nearer to our founder, Morihei Ueshiba O’Sensei. I pray here from Germany that your anniversary event will be a huge success. In celebration of this event, a grand anniversary party will be held in Hawaii together with Robert Kubo Shihan; and I am honored to be invited. Under the auspices of Kobayashi Yasuo Shihan, Igarashi Kazuo Shihan has been doing a profound study of Aikido; needless to say, he has been spreading Aikido not only in Japan, but also worldwide. It is well-known that he has been teaching and enriching the relationships with many countries in Northern Europe, Australia, Hawaii & others. In addition to the difficulties of perfecting techniques, his planning and execution; his peculiar way of holding himself; his ability to attract and hold people; these are all abilities I admire and deeply respect in Igarashi Shihan. Time seems to be speeding up more quickly, and recent advances in technology have brought us Japanese material wealth and conveniences. However, it is unfortunate that it seems that these have also brought about the decline of the psychospiritual culture of the Japanese. Aikido is a path that one carves out for oneself. I believe that a person’s heart should not change according to the times, and it is times like these when courtesy and good manners will be sought after. Character building through Aikido training fosters these qualities. Let us hold the old Japanese culture and traditions firmly in our hearts; remembering the words of O’Sensei: “Within Japan and outside as well, let us build bridges of gold and bridges of silver; let us contribute Aikido for world peace.” With those words as a foundation, we, his followers, should go through the 7-colored rainbow bridge and try to adhere to the founder’s wishes. Let us challenge and exhort one another, that we may boldly move forward and achieve the ultimate goal of world peace. As the representative of the All-Japan Aikido Federation, I offer my congratulations, as well as my heartfelt respect and appreciation for all the efforts of Igarashi Kazuo Shihan and Robert Kubo Shihan. I am very happy that these dojos have this joint seminar and demonstration, and I pray that it will be a successful event. I understand that the seminar will last for 2 days and that Shirakawa Katsutoshi Shihan, Oiwake Takuya Shihan, Igarashi Kazuo Shihan, Urban Shihan, Oshiyama Azuma Shihan, Robert Kubo Shihan, Arai Toshiyuki Shihan and Kobayashi Yasuo Shihan will be teaching. Given this list of instructing shihans, I have no doubt that this will be very productive seminar. In the demonstration, starting with the instructing shihans, representatives from places who have close relations with Igarashi Kazuo Dojo-cho, countries in Europe, Canada, America, South America and Asia will be participating. I think it will be a wonderful demonstration. As I’m sure you all know, Ueshiba Morihei O’sensei, realizing the deepest secrets of various arts; immersing himself in their disciplines founded this modern art of Aikido. The 2nd Doshu, Ueshiba Kisshomaru Sensei systematized and organized the teaching. The current Doshu Ueshiba Moriteru Sensei has continued the tradition, and Aikido now has around 1,500,000 members in 90 countries. We must keep the intents of the founder, the 2nd Doshu and the current Doshu in mind as we train, and pass on Aikido to future generations. Under the tutelage of Kobayashi Yasuo Shihan, Igarashi Kazuo Shihan started Aikido during his university days, and he has since dedicated his life to Aikido. With his base in Japan, he also has many teaching assignments overseas, and I don’t think you need me to tell you the wonderful results of his efforts. It has also been 50 years since Robert Kubo Shihan established a dojo in Hawaii. It was a difficult time to establish a dojo. I have no doubt that he had a lot of trials. The fact that we are celebrating this anniversary is a testament to Robert Kubo Shihan’s passion and tenacity. We have praising the efforts of these fine shihan, but we must also remember that they would not be where they are today without the support of their families and their dojo members. I pray for the continued success of Igarashi Kazuo Shihan and Robert Kubo Shihan, and the advancement of their dojos. Congratulations. I wish to extend my warmest wishes to Kailua Aikido Club as you celebrate a remarkable 50th anniversary. To Kubo Sensei who has loved and spread the art of Aikido to many over the past half-century, congratulations! I had the pleasure of meeting Kubo Sensei for the first time when he attended Calgary Aikikai’s 20th anniversary. This encounter opened up an avenue for my husband and I to frequent Hawaii, a place we grew very fond of over the years. In return, Kubo Sensei along with his lovely wife Eva visited us here in Calgary with Igarashi Sensei and his wife Machiko. The experiences shared in both places are now cherished memories in my heart. My husband would often say “One day, we will relocate to Hawaii!” and I know that this was because he loved the island where Kubo Sensei resided. I could only imagine how much he was looking forward to these anniversary celebrations. I regret that we are unable to attend with him, but I know that he is celebrating from up above. Your warm, welcoming demeanor and Japanese hospitality above and beyond what we first generations possess must be cascading to all your “deshi” and international visitors. I think it is an admirable and wonderful thing! Please continue to spread your love and skill of Aikido. Looking back, our friendship with Igarashi Sensei and his wife Machiko started way back in our single days. I recall that the first time I met Sensei was when he invited us to Hashimoto dojo. After that, my now deceased husband and I were wed and we came to enjoy Aikido practice twice a week. In the summer time, the sweat produced would weigh the gi down to my astonishment. He would also speak of how especially tasty the beer was after practice with sensei and others. It is since those younger years when our friendship was budding that Igarashi Sensei has been so good to us. Through Igarashi Sensei, we became acquainted with Kubo sensei and many great times were shared in and out of the dojo as the Aikido 3 brothers. Even after my husband’s passing, Sensei has made his way to Calgary twice a year to guide the committee. Without his assistance, the Calgary Aikikai 30th Anniversary certainly would not have been possible. I could only imagine how much my husband had been looking forward to your 30th and Kubo Sensei’s 50th anniversary. I feel like it was my husband that suggested that we do a joint celebration in Hawaii! I am sure he is celebrating up in heaven. Igarashi Sensei, I imagine it would be challenging to fly through different time zones but please continue to spread the passion and skills you have to Aikido lovers around the world. 時が、初めてだったのではないかと思います。その 後、私たちは結婚し、主人は週に２回の合気道の稽 古を楽しみに通っていました。 夏は、合気道衣が重くなるくらい汗をかき、 その道衣を見てビックリしたものです。又、稽古の 後に先生や元住吉道場の皆さんと行く居酒屋でのビ ールの味が、最高だと言っていました。そんな若い 時代から、五十嵐先生とは公私共に親しくさせて頂 いています。 また、久保先生とも五十嵐先生を通じて知り 合いになり、意気投合して合気道三兄弟として楽し い時を過ごさせていただきました。 主人亡き後も、年２回カルガリーに来ていただき、 会員の指導をして頂いています。カルガリー合気会 の３０周年記念大会も先生の御協力なしでは成しえ なかったと感謝しております。 このハワイ・カイルア合気道クラブ５０周 年、そして五十嵐道場３０周年の記念の会を主人 五十嵐先生との出会いは、先生が３年生の時 に、新入部員として入部した明大合気道部でした。 クラブの先輩ですから当然恐い存在でしたが、その 中にあって比較的やさしい兄貴分として、私たち後 輩を指導してくださいました。 その後、先生は合気道の専門家となられ、ま たご自分の道場を構えられ、この度めでたく３０周 年を迎えられました。私も卒業後、趣味として合気 道を続けていましたので、年に何回かはお会いして 親しくお付き合いをさせていただいておりました。 私がプロの道を目指そうと思った時、最初にご相談 を申し上げてお忙しい中、時間を取っていただき、 先生の道場で２泊３日マンツーマンでご指導を賜り ました。 先生は、それまでのプロとしてのノウハウ を惜しげもなく披露して下さり、こまごまとプロと しての心構え、広告、広報、事務処理の仕方などを 懇切丁寧に教えてくださいました。プロとは、かく あるべきかと驚くことばかりでした。また、道場 での指導の仕方も実地にこの目で見ることが出来ま した。先生の教えを胸に、私も先輩のような合気道 の専門家になり絶対に自分の道場を作ろうと、橋本 道場を後にしたのがつい先日のような気がいたしま す。 それからは五十嵐先生を手本としてまいりま したが、その後も様々なことを教えてくださいまし たし、海外にもよく誘ってくださいました。技も素 十嵐先生、ロバート久保先生はじめ、会員の皆様方 のご精励の賜物と拝察申し上げます。 先生方には大変お世話になっております。特 に、私は五十嵐先生をみて、ここまで来ました。こ こでは合気道の魅力であると感じている、試合がな いということについて述べさせて頂きます。 私は大学から合気道を始めました。それま では、サッカーやバスケットボール、水泳といった 試合のある団体競技を経験してきました。試合のな いスポーツは初めてでした。試合がないということ は客観的な評価をすることができないということ です。つまり、優勝するために、リベンジするため に、といった目標が明確化しにくくなります。モチ ベーションを維持することも難しく思われるかもし れません。しかしながら、私は寧ろ試合のないこと が合気道の素晴らしい魅力であると感じています。 なぜなら、客観的な評価にとらわれず、全ては自分 次第だということです。強いて言うなら常に自分自 身と試合をすると言えるかもしれません。 合気道は奥が深いです。人は生涯をかけても 脳のほんの数％を使うことしかできないといわれて おり、残りは潜在能力として使われないまま終わり ます。人の身体も同じです。科学技術が進歩し、あ らゆることが自動化されるにつれ、人が動物として 備えてきた本来の身体能力は忘れ去られつつありま す。この流れに対して合気道は原点回帰を図るもの です。人が本来もっている潜在能力、自然な動きを 自らの身体の内に深く深く追求する。この奥深さ、 限りない可能性こそ、私を魅了する合気道の魅力で あり、試合を絶対的に必要としない証だと考えま す。 最後になりましたが、昨年の第１１回国際合 気道大会に於いて、五十嵐先生の演武の受けを取ら せて頂き、どうも有難うございました。本当に貴重 な経験をさせて頂きまして大変感謝しております。 同時に、私の受けの未熟さを痛感致しました。今後 一層努力致します。 改めて、合気道五十嵐道場創立３０周年、ハ ワイ「田舎道場」創立５０周年、本当におめでとう ございます。 どうも有難うございました。 明治大学体育会合気道部 主将 佐々木 奨 走馬灯 祝 辞 ロバート久保先生、五十嵐先生、道場創立 ５０周年及び３０周年記念誠におめでとう御座いま す。心よりお祝い申し上げます。 ロバート久保先生とは３年前に、カナダで奥 様共々お会いしたのが最初でした。其の後パーティ ー等で何度かお会いする内に、その温かい人柄に触 れ尊敬の念を抱くようになりました。特に東日本大 震災の折には、多額の義援金を頂き、先生及び会員 の皆様に感謝申し上げます。有難う御座いました。 五十嵐先生とは、もう切っても切れない縁と 申しますか、４０年以上お付き合いさせて頂いてお ります。私が小林道場に入門した１９７２年２月、 五十嵐先生はすでに鹿内先生（ブラジル在住）と共 に住込みの内弟子でした。 学年も同じということで特に親しくして頂 き、良く食べ 良く飲み、良く遊びました。其の当 時、私は武道家の内弟子という過酷な環境に驚いた ものでした。五十嵐先生も当時は若いので体力は十 分でしたが、睡魔との戦いは大変でしたね。朝４時 起床、電車にて所沢道場へ（当時は小林道場には車 は1台もありませんでした）、到着後には道場の清 掃、そして6時半からの朝稽古、稽古終了後、食事造 り朝食、其の当時はコンビニもありませんでしたか ら大変です。そして休む間も無くアルバイト先の出 版社へ アルバイト終了後は、すぐ夕方からの稽古 と続き、夜9時頃終了、それから小平道場に帰るわけ です。夕食、風呂は何時になったのか、私の記憶に はありません。就寝は0時か1時、なのに五十嵐先生 からはツライとかキツイとかの言葉は、一言も聞い たことがありませんでした。まあ良く続いたもので す。正直私には絶対出来ないと思いました。 其の後、まち子さんという可愛い伴侶を得て 結婚。無粋にも所沢の新婚家庭には、何度もお邪魔 させていただきましたね。其の後、お兄さんの急逝 という悲しい出来事もありましたが、橋本に念願の 道場をオープン、小林道場の内弟子の方々に道場建 設の先鞭をつけました。そして現在は世界中を股に かけて活躍しているのはご承知の通りです。 私も現在、福島県にて合気道のプロとして やっておれますのも、良き師、良き友に恵まれたお 陰と感謝しております。五十嵐先生有難うございま す。 そして今後の益々のご発展、ご活躍をお祈り 申し上げます 「合気道五十嵐道場創立30周年」、「ハワ は、高いレベルでの稽古と武道の持つ緊張感、それ でいて親しみ易い雰囲気でした。中でも、五十嵐先 生の厳しい指導の中にも表れる優しさからは学ぶべ きものが多く、日頃よりお手本とさせて頂いており ます。五十嵐先生と出会えたことはとても幸福であ ると思っております。 五十嵐先生に合気道のご指導を賜わり今年で 20年になります。現在では八王子市合気道連盟理事 長、八王子道場指導員として任され、昨年には五十 合氣道五十嵐道場創立３０周年にあたり心よ りお祝いを申し上げます。 五十嵐先生との出会いは２５年前になりま す。私は高校のクラブ活動で合氣道を３年間やって いましたが、社会人になってからは暫く合氣道と遠 ざかっていました。ある時、後輩の紹介で道場に行 ったのが切っ掛けでした。私は少々自信をもって入 門したのですが、学生時代には殆ど経験したことな い「剣や杖」の稽古に戸惑いが（なんで？こんな事 をやるのだろうか？…）ある中で、何か新鮮な感じ がしました。また、体術も学生時代の力任せとは違 い、柔らかく多彩な技があることを知りました。 五十嵐先生の指導は、大きな声で明るく元気 よく指導されて、剣や杖を通して体術を指導してい ただいたので非常に解りやすく、合氣道がますます 面白くなり「合氣道って凄く奥深いなぁ～」と感動 したのを覚えています。 私は高校の３年間、毎朝の稽古と放課後の 稽古を休まず、主将まで勤めていました。初段を取 得する事が何より楽しみと大きな目標でありました が、三年生の夏休みのアルバイト先で、大きな怪我 をしてしまい、初段審査を受けることが出来ないま ま卒業しました。 それから数年が経ち「合氣道橋本道場」五十 嵐先生と出会い、日々道場に通い稽古に励んで一年 半後に、初段を取得させていただきました。黒帯に は「橋本道場」と刺繍されていています。今では少 しボロボロになった黒帯が、「私の宝物です！」。 現在、私が代表を勤める合氣道漸進会の師 範として五十嵐先生に御指導をしていただいていま す。また、私の仕事であります広告業も出会いの時 から、ずっとお世話になっており感謝しても仕切れ ないくらい感謝しています。 五十嵐先生に「力と力がぶつかっては駄目 だ！」とよく言われたことを、私は常に思い出して は、漸進会の会員にも伝えながら日々の稽古に励ん 年まことにおめでとうございます。西湘合気道会員 を代表して、心よりお喜び申し上げます。 五十嵐先生との出会いは、25年以上前に昇 級審査の会場で、当時小林道場の指導員の立場の先 生にお会いしたことが最初と思います。以来、なに かと声をかけていただくようになり、五十嵐道場の 合宿はもとより海外の合宿、演武会、研修会等、長 くお付き合いさせていただいています。 西湘合氣道は、埼玉大学合氣道部出身の坂西 昇一さん（現六段）が、1983年に、勤務先である小 松製作所の中に合氣道部を設立しました。現在では 地域の人たちも会員にすべく西湘合氣道の名称で合 気会に登録しています。現在、氏は転勤のため台湾 の新竹市に在住しているため、留守を預かる形で私 が代表となっていますが、彼は現地の合氣道道場と 活溌に交流しています。坂西さんが現地の合氣道に すんなりと溶け込めたのは、合氣道の持つ、争わな い、誰とでも仲良くなれる特性もありますが、小林 先生、五十嵐先生が長きに渡り台湾に指導交流を続 けてきて、現地の人たちから絶大な尊敬を受けてい なければ、叶わなかったと思います。 先生の指導を受けて感銘するのは、技の説明 が合理的で、わかりやすく、実際に体を動かしてみ ると、言った通りになることです。（なかなか身に つかないのは私の修行不足です。）人間の身体的機 能についても知識が豊富で、骨や筋肉の名前から動 きについて説明しながら、合気道の技の解説をして くださる稽古は、他の道場では得られない貴重で有 意義なものと思います。また、五十嵐先生はその人 柄でしょうか国内、海外の先生方の交流が深く、合 宿では、普段ではお目にかかれない先生方の指導を 受けることができ、それが楽しみでもあります。 未熟な私達にもわかりやすく丁寧に、やさし I believe that celebrate so many years, makes this a good time to look in time, everything that has been accomplished, and think over the future of Aikido. Looking back we find Aikido consolidating the 40s, the Kailua Aikido Club in the 60s and Aikido Igarashi Dojo 80s. The development and growth coupled with years of hard work, dedication and sacrifice from all of them have placed us here, facing a new challenge, making us, the younger generations, having to strive in the coming years to give even more. The sense of belonging that I have towards Aikido Igarashi Dojo makes very important our commitment. We should dream of achieving such an important place like this in our Aikido, but much more so in our society. To do this we must continue to work unconditionally, accepting our history, but knowing we face challenges of our times with passion to fight for the ideas and convictions. Back in 1963, Kailua Aikido Club was established, and in 1983 was founded Aikido Igarashi Dojo, but neither Kubo Shihan nor Igarashi Shihan, imagined in those days, that foundational decision would convene a group of Aikidoka from different parts of the world in 2013. Today, 50 years later, in Hawaii, in this festive reality, where the decision was made to favor the value of friendship, as is shown by these wonderful Shihan meeting this June. Today, as yesterday, humility, modesty, simplicity and practice will be our flags. Thank you very much to all the members who made this dream for the past 30 and 50 years, from day one and thanks to all those who work tirelessly every day to support it. O Sensei, through his understanding that all creation was one with him, realized that compassion and non-violence towards your enemy is the most effective defence towards your enemy, thereby creating Aikido. Just as Ghandi used compassion, forgiveness and love in his civil disobedience, so does O Sensei use those qualities in his personal conflicts. O Sensei’s genius takes practical movements with personal training to develop practical methods in applying non-violence in our daily lives. Aikido, which was founded by Morihei Ueshiba who is a proponent of world peace and is respected the world over seen in the same light as Ghandi, distinguishes itself from other martial arts which tend to hail violence. In that sense, we put a great amount of meaning in Kubo Sensei’s Hawaii Dojo’s 50th anniversary celebration as partners who share in the pursuit of such great qualities like as humility and beauty. When you came to Korea the last time, the members here were all impressed with the powerful technique you displayed. We hope that this celebration will be another opportunity to see your techniques. It is with a happy smile I go back in my memory to the times when we first met. Igarashi-sensei came to Sweden first time 1978 and I did my best to practise as much as possible for him at that time. We had a lot of fun, and yes, it was hard sometimes. After that we have spent time travelling and training in Europe and East Asia and it’s always with a great pleasure. First time I met Kubo-sensei was 1999 in Tokyo when we attended the funeral of Doshu Kishomaru Ueshiba. We spent some days together in an apartment in Tokyo and I must admit it was a very nice experience. I had a lot of laughs. After seeing Kubo-sensei some more times in Japan it was time to invite him to Stockholm… Hmm, that nearly was the end of the story but it takes more than a heart problem to beat a person like Kubo-sensei. I’m looking forward to many more years of friendship with these two true masters of Aikido. They are both examples of how a martial art and gentleness goes together. Igarashi Sensei visited in Finland for the first time in the year 1978. He came here with Ichimura Sensei and visited many places in Finland during his many weeks of staying. After that Finland Aikikai has invited Igarashi Sensei to visit here every year and from the year 1988 onwards Igarashi Sensei has been in Finland twice a year. We have had cooperation with Igarashi Sensei soon for 35 years and said to that Finland Aikikai will be 43 years old this year. As you can see from that Igarashi Sensei has been a very remarkable and important person to the development of Aikido in Finland. Since 1987 Igarashi Shihan and Kobayashi Yasuo Shihan have been keeping the official Easter and Summer seminars of Finland Aikikai so that when Kobayashi Shihan has hold Easter seminar Igarashi Sensei has hold the Summer seminar and vice versa next year. Every time when Igarashi Sensei comes to Finland he collects a big group of loyal practitioners who have been present ever since after Sensei´s first visit. His teachings have become deeper and deeper in the very purest heart of Aikido. He has also developed a great enthusiasm in his Finnish students to study the laws of the cooperation between mind and body in their Aikido practice. It is also of great importance that many Finnish Aikidokas have been able during these years to enjoy the hospitability and great spirit of Sensei´s own Hashimoto dojo. They have also brought a lot of knowledge and good attitude as a souvenir from there. Igarashi Sensei has been of extreme importance to the development of Finnish kyu and yudansha graduation and teaching systems by guiding our Yudansha board and Technical committee. He has always been willing to help us and it has been very easy to discuss with him and ask help even in very difficult matters. Igarashi Sensei has been the Great Person who has done the most on behalf of Finnish Aikido and we are very grateful and joyful for that. I struggled with the move and finding the Aikido balance I had in Omaha. After about a year I still could not find the Aikido family balance I was looking for, so I wrote Kubo Shihan a letter requesting approval to open a dojo in Kansas City and hoped I could make it work. Kubo Shihan saw something in me that I did not know existed and he agreed to let start the dojo under his supervision. It has not been easy, but Platte City Aikikai is still around and I have met some of the best people in Aikido as peers and students. I could not have done it without the support and confidence of Kubo Shihan and the family of Aikido of Hawaii International.
