ズレターは、そういうあなたが、いつか世界に通用する自分流の英語習得ができるようにと、St. Mary Collegeの講師・
スタッフ全員で心を込めて、四季毎にお送りしています。それぞれのメッセージがあなたのモチベーションを高め、少

最初のコラムは、「英語上達のヒント」です。
今回は、ミュージカル俳優で、サッカーの解説者でもある川平慈英さん（JayKabira、以下Kabiraさん)の英語勉強法、
Passion for Communication（情熱でコミュニケーション）の英語上達法をご紹介します。Kabiraさんは、母親はアメリカ人、
父親は日本人、というバイリンガル・バイカルチャーの環境で育ちました。ですが、英語での台詞や、アメリカに留学さ
れたときの多量の宿題や、そして絶えず自分の意見をはっきり言わなければいけないアメリカの授業形態には、日本
式になれている自分にとっては、Yes, Noをもハッキリ言う事に戸惑いがあり、大変だったそうです。Kabiraさんは、考え
たそうです。日本を訪れる海外の方は、一口会話で、「エキ、ドコ？」等、単語をつなげ合わせてでも生活しています。
加えて、日本人は、多くの場合、丁寧に教えてあげています。そこに気がついて、大事な事は、「正しい英語」をどれだ
け話せるかではなく、「話したい！コミュニケーションしたい！聞きたい！知ってほしい！」等の気持ち、パッションがど
れ程有るのかという事の方が重要だ、と、言われます。熱い思いがあふれていたら、笑顔、表情、目の輝き、声の張りが
強くでて、意思の疎通がよくできてきます。Kabiraさんは、「人生を楽しみたい、というエネルギーが強ければ強いほど、
しゃべるし、伝わる」と。Passion for Communication で、それが上達の秘訣だと言われます。
文法や難しい語彙の事は忘れて、パッションで、話したい事、伝えたい事を話してみましょう。

□ Michael & Madonna
Michael Jackson が亡くなられて６ヶ月がたって、「彼を生き返らせよう」“Bringing him
back to life”という声もあります。Michael Jackson の名前は、最近の We are the world for
Haiti, Grammys, This Is It. 等、大きく評価されて聞こえてきます。
本年のグラミー賞の受賞式で、彼の功績を讃えて、特別功労賞が送られ、マイケルの長
男プリンス君 ・ 長女パリスちゃんが出席し、その賞を受けました。プリンス君が、それに対
する謝辞を述べました。
We’re proud to be here to accept this award on behalf of our father, Michael Jackson.
First we’d like to thank god for watching over us for these past seven months and our
Grandma and Grandpa for their love and support. We’d also like to hank the fans. Our
father loved you so much since you were always there for him.
葬儀の際には、当初予定になかった、勇敢にもパリスちゃんの、突然のメッセージが涙を誘いました。 I just wanted to say, ever since I was born,
Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. And I just wanted to say, I love him so much. 生前の Michael Jackson は、裁判では無罪
にもかかわらず、奇行や、変態と言われ、良い印象を与えていた、以前の Michael Jackson ではありませんでした。最後に、子ども達に、自分の音楽
ダンスを実際に見せてあげたい、と始められたロンドン公演の “This is It”企画。彼から学ぶ事は、何でしょう。それは、Queen of Pop と言われる
Madonna の、彼に対する感動的な追悼演説（ 2009 年 9 月 13 日の MTV’s Video Music Awards のオープニング） から学ぶ事ができると思います。
Michael Jackson was born in August, 1958. so was I. Michael Jackson grew up in the suburbs of the Midwest. So did I. Michael Jackson had eight
brothers and sisters. So do I. When Michael Jackson was 6, he became a superstar and was perhaps the world's most beloved child. When I was 6,
my mother died. I think he got the shorter end of the stick. “I never had a mother, but he never had a childhood. And when you never get to have
something, you become obsessed by it. I spent my childhood searching for my mother figures; sometimes I was successful. But how do you recreate
your childhood when you are under the magnifying glass of the world for your entire life?” 「私には、母がいませんでしたが、マイケルには、子ども時
代がありませんでした。人は、何かが手に入らないと、そのことばかり考えてしまいます。私は、子ども時代を母親に変わる存在を探して過ごしました。
時には、うまくいきました。でも、自分のすべての生活を、世界中の人たちに拡大レンズで見られてしまう場合、その子ども時代をどのように、再生すれ
ばいいのでしょう。」
それから、マドンナは、母をなくして寂しかったけど、時には、それに変わるものを見つける事ができたけど、かれには、５才から、音楽活動をはじめ
て、子ども時代がなかった。（マイケルの自伝の中に、父らしい思い出がたった一つあり、一度だけ、父の背中に乗った事がある。それだけが彼の救
いだったと言われている事からもよくわかる）マドンナは、母を亡くした自分より、子ども時代のなかったマイケルの方が気の毒だと言っています。
その後、マイケルを招待して、テレビを見たりした事とか、その時、警護のお付きもつけないで、一人で、来てくれたことなどの、お話があり、
“But I had a childhood, and I was allowed to make mistakes and find my own way in the world without the glare of the spotlight.” 「でも私には、子ど
も時代があり、間違いをすることも許されていました。スポットライトを浴びる事もなく、自分の道を探すことも許されていました。」それに反して、マイケ
ルは、子ども時代もなく、間違いをすることも、人に隠れて自分の道を探すこともゆるされてはいなかったと。
“When I first heard that Michael had died I was in London, days away from the opening of my tour. Michael was going to perform in the same
venue as me a week later. All I could think about in that moment was that I had abandoned him. That we had abandoned him. That we had allowed
this magnificent creature that once set the world on fire to somehow slip through the cracks. While he was trying to build a family and rebuild his
career, we were all busy passing judgment. Most of us had turned our backs on him.” 「彼の訃報を聞いた時、マドンナは、自分がマイケルを見捨て
てしまっていた。かって、世界を興奮の渦に巻き込んだあんな偉大な人が世界の裂け目に滑り落ちてしまうような事を私たちは、ゆるしてしまった」と言
います。
“In a desperate attempt to hold onto his memory, I went on the Internet to watch old clips of him dancing and singing on TV and on stage and I
thought, 'My God, he was so unique, so original, so rare. And there will never be anyone like him again.' He was a king. But he was also a human
being and alas, we are all human beings and sometimes we have to lose things before we can truly appreciate them. I want to end this on a positive
note and say that my sons, age 9 and 4, are obsessed with Michael Jackson. There's a whole lot of crotch-grabbing and moon-walking going on in
my house, and it seems like a whole new generation of kids has discovered his genius and are bringing him to life again. I hope that wherever
Michael is now, he is smiling about this.”　「彼は家族をつくり生活を立て直そうとしていたのに、私たちは、彼を批判するのに忙しかった。みんなで、
彼に背を向けていたと。そして、彼女の９才と４才の二人の男の子は、今、マイケルに夢中で、crotch-grabbing ポーズとムーンウオークに一生懸命だ
」と。そして、“It seems like a whole new generation of kids have discovered his genius and are bringing him to life again.” 新しい世代のすべての子
ども達が、彼のすごさを発見し、彼をよみがえらせようとしているようですと言っています。彼は、計画の途中で、この世を去ってしまいましたが、子ども
達が自分をまねるのをみて、微笑んでくれる事を願っていると、 結んでいます。一度、インターネットで、全文を読んでみてください。そして、彼の自伝
も読んでください。そして、何が本当かよりも、天才と人間の間にいた Michael Jackson の苦しみが少理解できれば、たとえ、自分達とは、随分違う立
場の彼の人生ではありましたが、批判する側にはなりたくないと思えるのではないでしょうか。
Happy New Year! Can you believe it? 2010 is already here and in a few short
months, the school year will be finished! I am sure that all of you worked very
hard and will finish the year having learned a lot and improved your English.

In this edition of St. Mary Horizons, I would like to discuss my December
trip to Sakai City (坂井市) in Fukui Prefecture (福井県). You may recall that
in a previous Culture Column, I talked about my travels in Fukui Prefecture to
Eiheiji (永平寺), one of two main temples of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism.
Sakai City, which is located to the north of Fukui City, has 2 famous sites
worth visiting. The first of these is Tōjinbō (東尋坊), a place of scenic beauty
along the coast, and the second is Maruoka Castle (丸岡城), one of the oldest
castles in Japan.
Tōjinbō (東尋坊)
Along the coast northwest from Fukui city is the scenic landmark of Tōjinbō.
Most famous as a historic suicide site, the rocky outcroppings jut out of the sea
in a series of columns eroded over millennia by the saltwater. There is a cliff that
is about 1 km long and the way that the waves of the Japan Sea hit against it is
truly stunning. This is the only place in Japan that has a giant pyroxene andesite
pillar-shaped jointing. Because of this geologically rare phenomenon, Tōjinbō is
designated as a national natural monument.
Tōjinbō (東尋坊)
Maruoka Castle was built by Shibata Katsutoyo in 1576 and is one of the
oldest of the few authentic castles remaining in Japan. Located on a high hill
above Maruoka, the castle is also known as Kasumiga Castle (霞城), Mist
Castle, owing to a legend that a fog would descend to protect it in time of
battle. Sadly, the 1948 Fukui earthquake (福井地震) which leveled nearby
Fukui also brought Maruoka Castle tumbling to the ground, and the current
structure is a 1955 reconstruction using 80% of the original materials. Both the
exterior and interior of the castle do remain fully wooden (rather than
concrete), thus making the reconstruction basically authentic. Listed as an
Important Cultural Property, it still remains rather off-the-beaten-path and
overlooked by most guidebooks outside Japan. I would strongly recommend
visiting because it is a beautiful castle, located in a wonderful city.

Learning to Read 1
Non-native speakers of English are often looking for effective ways to improve their
language skills. The Internet has many Web sites that are helpful tools for
students. One Web site that I have found to be very useful is
www.breakingnewsenglish.com. This site covers a wide range of current topics.
Each topic begins with one or two paragraphs of information that covers the story.
Here is an example of a story about the world’s tallest building opening in Dubai:
The world's tallest building officially opened in Dubai on January the 4th. The height of the 828-metre Burj Khalifa was kept a secret until the
opening ceremony. It is twice the height of New York’s Empire State Building. Another big surprise at the opening was the renaming of the
tower. The building had always been called Burj Dubai. However, Dubai’s ruler announced it would now be called Burj Khalifa after the ruler
of Abu Dhabi, Dubai’s neighbour. The oil-rich emirate of Abu Dhabi helped save Dubai from possible financial collapse. The chairman of the
company that built the Burj, Mohamed Alabbar, said the building gives "hope and optimism." He added: “The world has gone through …
difficult times… this is the beginning of a gradual move forward.”
After the reading, there are warm-up activities that discuss the main ideas of the story. The next set of activities include Before Reading,
While Reading, and After Reading questions. Here is an example of one of the activities:

reading, and writing skills.

Are You Smarter Than a Five Year Old???
Well, of course you are. However, when it comes to language you might not be able
to learn as efficiently as a young child. According to many linguists children have a
special ability to learn language. They can do some things better than adults. For
example, children are better at pronunciation. When children learn a language they
have an ability to pronounce the language just like a native speaker. Adults on the
other hand have a difficult time with pronunciation. Don’t give up yet though,
adults are really good at some things, too—such as grammar.
I know, I know, I said a bad word. Grammar class is never very fun, but it is really
important. Without grammar you can’t speak another language. In fact, you
couldn’t speak your native language without grammar. Adults learn and understand
grammar much better than children. Adults can think about how grammar works
and use that knowledge to build sentences. The problem is that when we think
about how to build each sentence using our grammar we tend to speak slowly and
rigid. That is because we are thinking so hard before we speak. Remember, if you
want to speak more fluently—faster and smoother—then you have to practice speaking. Next time you learn some grammar in class try to use
it with your friends. The more you talk the more fluent you will become.
Unfortunately, children do not have to think about grammar. It just comes to them more easily than adults. Plus, children usually love to
speak so they are using language all the time. Adults get nervous and shy and,therefore, do not talk enough. Don’t give up studying a
language. Remember, adults do some things very well, such as grammar. We can use that knowledge to help us say whatever we want.
Language is like a puzzle, you just need to find the pieces to play the game. Next time you have grammar class enjoy yourself and try to
speak, speak, speak!! That is because we are thinking so hard before we speak. Remember, if you want to speak more fluently—faster and
smoother—then you have to practice speaking. Next time you learn some grammar in class try to use it with your friends. The more you talk

Though high school students in Japan tend to learn English through reading
and studying grammar, often when new students enter Nunoike they feel the
reading load is difficult because they are asked to do much more reading than
they are used to and the fact that they have difficulty understanding what they
are asked to read. In order to deal with heavy or difficult reading loads in a
college or university situation, students should hone their reading skills by
becoming active readers, considering the purpose of their reading assignments,
and learning strategies for answering reading questions quickly and easily.
By focusing on these reading strategies, the reading assignments will seem less daunting and become more interesting. In this month’s edition
we will look at active reading strategies.
Becoming an active reader is not difficult to do. Before beginning the reading assignment, it is important to preview the topic. When
previewing, think about what you already know about the topic. Have you already discussed the topic in one of your classes, or seen it in the
news or on the Internet? What did you learn about it in the past? Look at the title and any pictures in the reading and think about what they
tell you about the topic or the contents of the text. The title and images are designed to help you understand the writer’s approach to the
topic and some of the main ideas. Next, make a list of vocabulary or concepts you already know that are related to the topic and think about
how they might be incorporated into the text or the class discussion of the assignment.
When you begin reading, look at the first and last sentence of each paragraph and make notes about what you think the main ideas of each
paragraph are. After deciding the main ideas, think about what you know about writing paragraphs and use that knowledge to find more
specific sub-topics, details, or examples in the text.
As you read ask questions. Make notes about sections of the reading that you do not understand, that you want more information about, or
that you feel do not fit into the overall theme of the text. You can use these questions to help you think more deeply about the topic, or for
participation in class discussion about the reading.
Lastly, don’t worry about understanding every word in the text. If you come across words or phrases you do not understand, try to
understand them by context. Look at the grammatical and sentence structure of the sentence, other words you already know in it and also the
sentences before or after and think about what the general meaning is. Highlight new words and phrases and look them up after you finish the
reading. You will find that you can understand the general ideas without disrupting your reading by turning to your dictionary.
Becoming an active reader takes some work, but you will find it makes understanding texts easier and more interesting. Once you hone your
active reading skills, you will also find the overall time it takes to complete reading assignments will be less. In the next edition, we will take a
look at understanding purpose.

□ “You’ve Got to Find What You Love”
Hello! 鈴木綾です。ポートランド大学での４年生の秋学期が
終わり、卒業まであと１学期というところまで来ました。秋学期
では専門分野の学習において難しい内容を学び、イベントの
運営は大変なこともありましたが成功し、たくさんの友達と今回
のイベント運営を通じて親しくなることができました。今回は秋
学期の授業で良い評価をもらうことができたArt Historyの授業
についてと、尊敬して、いつも刺激をくれている私の周りの友
達についてお話します。
□ A rt History Class & My Friedns
Art History のクラスは私のお気に入りの授業の一つであり、今までのWritingと
リサーチスキルの訓練を大いに生かすことができました。ヨーロッパを中心に中石
器時代のアートからレネサンス芸術まで学びました。特定の時代の中から興味の
ある作品や作者を選んで、リサーチ論文を書く課題が毎週のようにありました。客
観的に見た作品の分析だけではなく（デザイン、材料、作品の表情など）、その
作品が作られた時代と文化背景、そして作者の心情までもをたくさんの参考文献
を使いながら分析して論文にまとめました。一つのリサーチ論文を仕上げるのに
たくさんの作業と時間を要するため大変でしたが、今までの学校生活で、忙しい
スケジュールの中でも大量の論文の課題をやりこなしてきたという経験が私に時
間を効率よく使う余裕と自信を与えてくれました。これのおかげで、内容が充実し
ているリサーチ論文を書くことができ、先生から毎回高い評価をもらうことができました。授業で一番うれしかったことは、授業の最後のリサーチ論
文を提出したときに、先生から私の論文を今後の生徒達のための見本として使いたいとお願いされたことです。留学生でまだ英語を勉強中の私
の論文でも、先生に私のアイディアや分析力を高く評価してもらえたことがとてもうれしかったです。布池から大学までこれまで訓練してきた
Writingスキルの成果を出すことができました。
そして、この秋学期からたくさんの親しい友人ができ、日々彼らから良い刺激を受けたくさんのことを学んでいます。一人は私のルームメイトで２
年生の看護学部のアメリカ人。日本語を勉強したことがあり、お寿司やせんべい、ほうじ茶など、かなりの日本好きなのです。私が初めてアメリカ
に来た時に授業が一緒で、いつも授業の課題や英語などについて助けてくれます。彼女のすごいところは、毎日とても細かな“やることリスト”を
つけて、必ず深夜１２時までにすべての予定を片づけてしまいます。彼女のやろうと決めたことを必ず実行する力と素晴らしい集中力は私の目指
すべき見本です。さらに、大学には留学生がたくさんの違う国から来ていて、年齢、言語、文化、そして経験の違う留学生の仲間同士いつも多く
のことを学び合っています。私はよくＭＢＡ（ビジネスの修士課程）の留学生の友達と遊ぶことが多く、社会に出て仕事経験のある年上の彼らから
は、仕事についてのアドバイス受けたり、大人としての態度などを見習うことができます。そして私の周りには、たとえたくさんの課題や仕事があっ
て忙しくても、イライラしたり弱気になったりせず、いつも陽気で笑顔な人がたくさんいます。去年、私が毎日のハードなスケジュールに追い込まれ
てイライラしているときに、卒業間近だった日本人留学生の先輩に、「忙しいときでも
友達の前では笑顔でいられるくらい強くならないとね」と言われたことがありました。私
の精神的弱さを感じました。大変なときこそ笑顔でいる。精神的に強くて余裕のある
人間とは、どんな時でも笑顔を忘れない人なのだと思いました。私の周りにはいつも
陽気な頑張りやの友達がたくさんいます。彼らをいつも見ていると、尊敬すると同時
に自分もこうなりたい！と思うようになりました。アメリカに来て、このように尊敬でき日
々刺激をもらえる仲間たちに出会ったことは私の貴重な財産です。これからは彼らか
ら見習ったこと今度は自分自身が生かすことができるよう努力していきたいです。
今回のOne Point　Lessonは全世界のビジネス界をリードする Apple社のCEO(最高
経営責任者)のSteve Jobs氏のエピソードです。
彼は、シリコン・バレーにキャンパスのあるスタンフォード大学の卒業式で、伝説の演
説をしました。（スタンフォード大学のホームページでも閲覧可能です。ぜひ、チェック
してみてください。）Jobs氏は、自身の半生を振り返りながら、３つの大きな挫折の経験
を話されました。
まず、自分は貧しい労働階級の夫妻の養子であった事。両親が必死に働いて貯め
たお金を、自分の興味の持てない勉強に使うのは無駄だと、オレゴン州ポートランドの
有名な私立大学「Reed College」を半年で退学したこと。ただ、その「Reed College」で
は、 Calligraphy(カリグラフィ、装飾書体)教育が全米一盛んで、キャンパス中の掲示
やポスターからでも美しい書体を学ぶ事ができた、と言われCalligraphyの授業で、
serifや san serifの書体について学び、それが、 Macの独特の書体を作るのに役に立
った事を話されました。 I took a calligraphy class and learned about serif and san
serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter
combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical,
artistically subtle in a way that science can’t capture, and I found it fascinating. ….
If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class,
and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do.
それから２０才で、 Apple Computer社を立ち上げます。最初は両親のガレージで始めた仕事が、１０年後には、従業員4000人、時価総額20億ド
ルの大企業にまで成長した。ところが、最盛期を迎えたその時に、創始者であるのに、 Jobs氏は、解雇されてしまった。シリコン・バレーから逃げ出
して行こうと思ったけれど、自分には、まだ、自分のしている事が好きで、自分のしてきた事を続けたいという気持ちがあった。それで、やり直す事を
決めて、新コンピュータ会社NeXT,さらにアニメーション制作会社Pixarを立ち上げ、アニメ映画Toy Storyで大成功を収めた。ところが、Apple社が
NeXTを買収したので、Jobｓ氏は、又、Apple 社に戻る事になった。その後、iMac, iTunes, iPod, iPhoneなどの製品やサービスを打ち出し、世界のビ
ジネス界をリードし続けています。そして、色々な事があったけど、続けられたのは、「自分のしている事を愛していた」からだと言われます。だから、
“You’ve got to find what you love” (愛するものをみつけなければなりません).
３つ目のストーリーは、Jobｓ氏は膵臓癌の宣告を受け、３〜６ヶ月の命と言われ、医師からも治癒の見込みがないと言われますが、ごくまれなケー
スで、手術が成功し、病状も安定した事。そして、人の意見に左右されて、自分の時間を無駄にしてはいけませんと言われます。 Your time is
limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't
let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They
somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.「他人の意見にとらわれて、自分の内なる声を打ち消すような
ことがあってはなりません。一番大切な事は、自分の心と直感に従う勇気を持つ事です」とJobs氏は、力強く話されました。
そして、今までの人生で色々な経験をした。その経験のひとつひとつが、何かの役に立
つなどとは、その時は思えなかった。人生の一つ一つの経験、それを点とたとえれば、
その点と点がいつかつながるものだという事は、未来を見据えてもすぐには見えません。
でも、１０年という単位で過去をふりかえると、点と点を結ぶ線、道が見えてくるのです。
未来を見据えて、点と点をつなげることは、できませんが、過去を振り返って、つなげる
事はできるのです。ですから、今あるいくつもの点がいつか将来につながるはずだと信
じなければいけません。自分の直感を信じるのです。この考え方は、自分を裏切った事
は、ありません。それは、すばらしい結果をうみだしてくれました。
It was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was
very clear looking backwards ten years later. You can’t connect the dots looking
forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the
dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something -- your gut,

画、ドキュメンタリー映画、 洋楽のDVD売上げの歴代1位となったそうです。映画の中のマイケルは、音と歌とダンスの天才であり、
彼の中にある完璧をめざし、共に演ずる人へのアドバイスをすることがもどかしいくらい音と共に踊り、歌い、微笑み、誰にも丁寧に
謙虚に接しています。人種と性別を超えようとした彼の姿が、晩年の彼に対する性的虐待疑惑（実際の裁判では、完全無罪であっ
た）や、奇行や醜聞を捨象して、純粋に彼のたぐいまれな才能に圧倒されます。
マドンナの彼への追悼演説で、言っています。

高のステージという意味。）
２）たったこれだけ？もうだめだ。（Itは、「不満足な結果」とさす場合に
このような意味になる。）
３）これで最後だよ。本当に、おしまいなんだ。
