When tax season rolls around, it’s always exciting to think about what one may receive in their tax return. This got us to thinking about what could be possibly written off for our loving pets. While we are not tax experts, we did find some interesting information about what may be eligible to be written off as a tax deduction. We obviously recommend asking a tax professional, but here are some thoughts to keep in mind. • Adoption: While adopting a pet is fulfilling by itself, it’s nice to know that you may be able to justify their adoption fee as a charitable donation assuming they are a 501 c non-­‐‑profit status shelter. • Donations: Donations do not only need to be monetary, donating toys, food or bedding can be written off as long as the organization is non-­‐‑profit. • Service Animals: Sometimes it’s possible for the cost of a service animal to be deductible as a medical expense. This can include buying, training, and care needed for the service animal. • Fostering: The expenses have to be directly related and attributable to the care and services to a qualified 501(c)(3) organization. You also must have documentation to support the expenses, and the organization needs to provide written acknowledgement for expenses. • Moving: If you are required to move for your job, you may be able to deduct some of their moving costs, since legally they are considered property. • Mascot and Guard Dogs: A pet that is used for professional reasons may be able to be written off after it meets several requirements (1.
