Abstract : Lalande, born in Bourg-en-Bresse,
made his first studies at the Jesuit College, later
in Paris, attending Delisle’s and Lemonnier’s
courses. He went to Berlin in 1751 for the
determination of the lunar parallax, with Lacaille
being in South Africa. Among the observatories
in Paris, at the end of XVIIIth century, were the
ones remaining to the Navy, the Royal
Observatory, and the observatory named after
the Military school. Being nominated as the
head of this last observatory, Lalande asked his
“nephew” to observe positions of stars, having in
view a large catalogue. Together with other
observers, he and his wife obtained places for
about 50,000 such objects, the so-called Lalande’s
Catalogue.
Lalande is also famous for his
writings, mostly his book whose title in French is
“Astronomie” published in three editions. He
was a member of the Académie des Sciences and
of the Bureau des Longitudes.
