In antique furniture, there are many types of seats with many types of function.
So there are many types of appellation. Today we will clarify about the seats called « cabriolet ».
In this note, I am referring only to the French furniture.
So what is a chair called cabriolet ? as you may have heard this term.
アンティーク家具には、様々なイスやソファのタイプがあり、その機能の違いから、呼び名も違います。
本日は« cabriolet »についてお話しましょう。

と呼ばれているのでしょう？もしかしたら、カブリオレという名前を皆さん聞いたことがあるかもしれ
ません。
In the Justin Storck (it seems he was French despite his name which sounds Anglo-Saxon) cabinetmaking dictionary , at the word cabriolet definition page, we have few illustration, but that’s
definitely not clear. You could think that any armchair is a cabriolet.

So another source is Roubo, on page 615 and page 634, he explains us, that the cabriolet chair (or
armchair), is the one with a curved shape for the flat part (the seating part) so the back of the chair (
or armchair) as to be concave. And to clarify completely he draw a fully detailed illustration.
About the name itself, Roubo says he does not know if it has something to do with the vehicle of the
same name that also appears during this era.

ページにて彼はカブリオレ、もしくはカブリオレアームチェアーは座る部分が上から見たときに湾曲し
ており背もたれ部がその座部に沿うように湾曲しているイスを指すと定義しています。イラストでより
わかりやすくするため、詳細を描いています。
彼の名前でもある家具職人のバイブルであるRoubo
において、車の名称に使われているカブリオレとの関連ははっきりとしていないと書かれています。た
だ、同じ時代にカブリオレと呼ばれる馬車が登場したことが知られています。

Anyway, more recently, in the “Mobilier domestique” tome 1, page 48, it is also clarified. Havard is
quoted and the Encyclopédie (Diderot’s) is quoted. They are taking the same definition as Roubo,
which is a chair (or an armchair) with a concave back.

引用されています。
So therefore, we can say that a chair or an armchair, can be qualified by the term “cabriolet” if its
back is concave.
これらのことから、アンティークのイスやアームチェアがカブリオレかどうかを確認するためには背も
たれが湾曲しているかどうかを見ることで判断することができます。
