After merging with former Kagami Village and Tosayama Village three years ago, the city has absorbed Haruno Town in January this year. This edition gives you some geographical explanations about how the city has changed after the merger and guides you to new attractions of the city, mainly in former Haruno Town. Kochi City How much bigger is Kochi City? Population and Area The population of Kochi City is estimated to have exceeded 340 thousand as a result of this merger. According to the statistics collected in December 2007, 326,701 people lived in the city and 16,516 in Haruno town. Compared with other capital cities in Shikoku Island, Kochi City is the second smallest followed by Tokushima City which has 266,263 in the latest survey. The biggest is Matsuyama, 514,893 and the second largest is Takamatsu, 426,603. The new Kochi City’s land area is 309.22 square kilometers, of which the city occupies 264.28 ㎢ and Haruno Town 44.94 ㎢. Compared with other capital cities in Shikoku Island, Kochi City is the second smallest in area as well, followed by Tokushima City which has 191.39 ㎢. The rank is the same as that of population – Matsuyama is the biggest, 429.03 ㎢ and Takamatsu is the second largest, 375.09 ㎢ according to the 2006 statistics from the Geographical Survey Institute. - Susumu Yoshida for KIA Nissie legend in Niyodo River map① Scotland’s Loch Ness Monster Nessie is famous, but did you know that there’s a similar legend in Kochi? It’s Niyodogawa (Niyodo River) Nissie who has now, due to the merger with Harunocho (Haruno Town), come under the jurisdiction of Kochi City. Ever since the early Edo Period, there have been many reported sightings of a monster as big as a whale with a long neck like a snake in Niyodogawa. Nissie was loved as the god of the river and protector of fishermen. However, Nissie sightings ceased abruptly in the 1970s. Haruno-no-yu is located opposite from the Haruno Athletic Park, and offers first rate services. Of course it offers the normal services of most onsens – segregated bathing, coin-operated chairs and saunas. But it also has a spa bathing area where you can relax with your opposite-sex friends – with bathers of course! But my favorite aspect of this onsen is its unique sand bath. Sand is heated to above 40 degrees, and your own attendant will dig you a hole to lie in. He will then heap sand on top of you so that you are heated to your core. To experience volcanic sand bathing would normally require you to travel all the way to Kagoshima. But thanks to amalgamation, all you need do is travel to Kochi City! -Matt Douglas, Kencho CIR Ajisai Kaido (The most famous hydrangea road in Kochi) There is a delightful place in former Haruno-cho (Haruno Town) known as the ‘Ajisai Kaido.’ It is especially beautiful in the rainy season. This 5 km-channel is lined with hydrangeas of various colors, attracting many visitors. This all started when local seniors decided to plant some hydrangeas along the waterway to improve people’s impression of their town. At present, about 10 thousand hydrangeas of various colors bloom along the channel in early summer. The best season for hydrangeas is early June. You can participate in the annual “Ajisai Walk”; enjoy viewing hydrangeas as you walk along the channel on either the 12km (hardy hiker course) or the 6km (leisurely walkers course) route. At the same time, local specialty products will be on sale. By the way, do you know that a hydrangea’s color depends on the soil? If the soil is alkaline, the petals become reddish, whereas acidic soils make them bluish. For this reason, it is also known as the Shichi henge, meaning flower of 7 colors. It cuts across the Hydrangea Road, past former Haruno town office and Tanemaji temple. This irrigation channel was built by Kenzan Nonaka, who was a minister of the Tosa domain. It took 5 years to build, with work commencing in 1648. The irrigation channel allowed people to cultivate crops in the Haruno area; moreover, people could use the channel for shipping. Nowadays, the Hirooka Irrigation Channel still supplies water to farmland. It is no exaggeration to say that the Hirooka Irrigation Channel is what makes Haruno’s agricultural sector prosperous. – Etsuko Soeda, TW volunteer Haruno Athletic Park map③ This must be Kochi’s largest athletic park. Located in Haruno Town, it boasts various facilities for sports, such as a stadium, track and field facilities, a big gymnasium, tennis courts, a shooting range, and a swimming pool. Many competitions are held year-round, and professional baseball and soccer teams base themselves here for boot camp style training. Not only can you enjoy playing and watching sport here, but there is also a playground for children. There are walking paths, a lookout that commands a view over the Pacific Ocean and accommodation facilities. From Kochi City, it takes about 25 minutes by car, or a 500-yen bus-ride to get there. There is a hot spring, 'Haruno no Yu' nearby, so after playing sport, you can go there to relax. – Hiroshi Nishio, TW volunteer ひろおかよ う す い 弘岡用水 ひろ おか ようすい に よどがわ はたぜき ちょう きゅうはるのちょう や く ば ま え た ね ま じ よこ map④ Tanemaji, Temple No. 34 on the 88-temple pilgrimage is in Haruno. This adds one more pilgrimage-temple to Kochi city - including Zenrakuji (No.30), Chikurinji (No.31) and Sekkeiji (No.33). The new city now has four pilgrimage temples. It is said that this temple was named after Kobo Daishi, the well-known high priest who constructed the 88 pilgrimage temples in Shikoku. He is said to have planted five kinds of seeds there, including rice, wheat, millet, corn and bean. (Tane in Tanemaji means seed in Japanese.) People have long believed its principal image of Buddha grants easy childbirth, meaning many expectant parents come here to pray. Access: Get on a bus from the JR Kochi Station and get off at Haruno Gōdō Chōsha (Former Haruno Town Office) and then walk 15 minutes – Susumu Yoshida for KIA Horticulture in Haruno Do you know that the Haruno area is called “the Denmark of Tosa”? This name indicates that Haruno is Kochi Prefecture’s most productive agricultural area. The latest statistics show the former Haruno Town produces the most cucumbers and tomatos in the whole prefecture. They are harvested even in winter because they can be cultivated in plastic greenhouses, which keep the temperature high enough to grow them even in cold weather. The flourishing horticultural industry in the Haruno area is due mainly to the irrigation channels that extend throughout the area. Plus, its warm climate with long hours of sunlight also makes the Haruno area a horticulturalists’ dream. – Susumu Yoshida for KIA なが さかい う ら ど わん そそ よう 街道、 旧 春野町役場前、種間寺の横を流れ、浦戸湾に注いでいます。この用 すいろ え ど じだいし ょ き と さ は ん かろう の な か けんざん ねん ねん 水路は江戸時代初期の土佐藩の家老、野中兼山によって 1648年から 5年がか つく よう す い ろ つく はるの ち い き かいこん かのう りで造られました。用水路が造られたことによって春野地域の開墾が可能にな ふね つか ぶっし ゆそう おこな うんが やくわり り、さらには舟を使っての物資の輸送も 行 われ運河の役割もはたしていまし いま のうち ひろ おかようすい みず ひ はるのちょう えんげい た。今でも農地には弘岡用水から水が引かれています。春野町の園芸がさか ひろおかようすい い す んになったのは、この弘岡用水のおかげといっても言い過ぎではないでしょう。 たんとう そ え だ え つ こ （担当：副田悦子） は る の うんどうこうえん ち ず 春野運動公園 こ うち （地図③） もっと おお うんどう こうえん はるのちょう い ち たぶん高知で 最 も大きな運動公園ではないでしょうか。春野町に位置し、ス りくじょうきょうぎじょう おお たいいくかん しゃげきじょう タジアムや陸上競技場、大きな体育館、テニスコート、射撃場やスイミングプー しせつ き ょ うぎ ねん ルなど、さまざまなスポーツ施設があります。たくさんのスポーツ競技が１年を とお かいさい やきゅう 通して開催され、プロの野球チームやサッカーチームが、トレーニングのため おこな かんせん にキャンプを 行 います。スポーツをしたり観戦したりするだけでなく、子どもた あそ ば り よ う さん ぽ ど う たいへいよう のぞ ちの遊び場としても利用することができます。また、散歩道や太平洋を望む てんぼうだい しゅくはく し せ つ くるま い こ う ちしない ふん 展望台、そして、宿泊施設などもあります。車で行くと高知市内から 25分かか やく えん い ちか ゆ り、バスで約500円で行けます。近くに「はるのの湯」もあるので、スポーツのあ り よ う Tanemaji Temple はるのちょう 弘岡用水は仁淀川の八田堰から、いの 町 と春野町の 境 をぬけ、あじさい かいどう たんとう に し お ひ ろ し とに利用してみてもいいですね。（担当：西尾洋士） た ね ま じ ち ず 種間寺 （地図④） きゅうはるのちょう ばん ふだしょ た ね ま じ きゅう こ う ち し ばん ふだしょ 旧春野町には３４番札所「種間寺」があります。 旧 高知市にある３０番札所 ぜん ら く じ ばん ふだしょ ちくりんじ ばんふだしょ せっけいじ くわ しん こ う ち し 「善楽寺」、３１番札所「竹林寺」、３３番札所「雪渓寺」を加えると、新高知市には ふだしょ そんざい ４つの札所が存在することになります。 なまえ ゆらい こうぼ うだ いし とう も かえ こく こめ むぎ あわ まめ 名前の由来は、弘法大師が唐から持ち帰った５穀（米、麦、粟、きび、豆）の たね た ね ま じ な つ い ほんぞん 種をまいたことから「種間寺」という名が付けられたと言われています。本尊は あんざん や くし し んこう あんざん き が ん てら ゆうめい 安産の薬師として信仰され、安産祈願の寺として有名です。 こうつう こうちえき は る の ご うどうちょうしゃ きゅうはるのちょう や く ば げしゃ と ほ ふん 交通：高知駅からバスで春野合同庁舎（旧春野町役場）下車、徒歩１５分。 たんとう よ し だ すすむ （担当：吉田 進 ） は る の えんげい 春野の園芸 はるの ち い き と さ よ ぞんじ 春野地域は「土佐のデンマーク」と呼ばれているのをご存知でしょうか？それ ちいき こうちけん えんげいさんぎょう もっと さか ところ はこの地域が高知県で園芸産業の 最も盛んな所だからです。 さいしん とうけい きゅうはるのちょう せいさんりょう こうちけん もっと 最新の統計によると、旧春野町ではきゅうりとトマトの生産量が高知県で最 おお あたた きおん い じ ない さいばい も多いらしいです。 暖 かい気温を維持できるビニールハウス内で栽培できるこ ふゆ しゅうかく とから冬でも収穫できます。 はるの ち い き えんげい さんぎょう さか ちいき は めぐ よう す い ろ 春野地域で園芸産業が盛んなのは地域に張り巡らされた用水路によるとこ おお おんだん き こ う にっしょう じ か ん おお ちいき えんげい ろが大きいです。もちろん、温暖な気候と日照時間の多さもこの地域を園芸 お うこ く たんとう よ し だ すすむ 王国にしています。（担当：吉田 進 ） た Events and others イベント・その他 Exhibition−‘Katsuo and Tosa People’ 企画展「 鰹 −カツオと土佐人―」 This exhibition traces the history of the bond between the people of Tosa and the famous Katsuo fish. There are many exhibits showing the past and present methods of catching katsuo and preparing it into Katsuo-bushi (fish shavings). For example, there are displays of prints depicting fishing and katsuo-bushi preparation techniques from the Edo era, as well as old documents detailing the practice of samurai giving katsuo-bushi as gifts, along with models of katsuo fishing boats and bumper-catch flags. Combining the story of Oryo, (Sakamoto Ryoma’s wife) with Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, the musical follows the winding path of 3 love stories, giving you a behind the scenes look at how the Meiji restoration really happened! I’m enrolled in biotechnology master program in Kochi University of Agriculture. So far, I’m the only Tunisian in Shikoku. Well, it has some advantage and some inconveniences. But I’m happy to be here. Kochi welcomed me with open arms. I used to have a fast paced life, living in a permanently crowded big city: the capital. That is why I found myself a little bit "out of my shoes" at first in Monobe campus in Nankoku. I couldn't neither speak nihongo, nor read kanji…it was funny to try to explain with gesture to supermarket workers that I needed a hose pipe, ear cleaner, bleach… Try to imagine me explaining with gesture the word “condom” to an old woman working in “conbini”! In Japan when you enter a shop or convenience store you can hear the famous “irashaimase”. It sounded for me like “Assalemou alaykom”=“konnichiwa”, which we use every time in this circumstances in my country, and when you hear it you have to reply the same (kind of greeting). During my first month, I was replying “irashaimase” every time I heard it. Go figure! I have also found that everything looked “mini size” to me: cars, streets, plates, cups, tomatoes, my room, my bath and also Japanese people. It was so good to feel bigger. For the first time in my life I knew how tall basketball players feel. Tunisians do eat bread as often as Japanese people eat rice. But here bread is expensive, so I started to prepare rice with some Tunisian spices every day. It is so delicious. In one month, I ate as much rice as I ate in my whole life in my country. Now 8 months have passed. I have become a little bit famous for Tosajin thanks to some Tunisian food cooking classes, some events in which I introduced Tunisia, and Tunisian culture. I traveled to Shimanto, went for picnics to Ino, a hot spring in Aki, but there are still so many interesting challenges, so many hidden villages to visit. One article in this edition is made up for April Fools’ Day. Please guess which is FAKE!
