Japanese students, as well. We make every effort to select stories that are not only
will learn about reactions to a controversial Zika-fighting plan, new
recommendations regarding women and alcohol and an abortion case in Texas.
The stories will introduce you to American factory workers, pet owners, and
visitors to Cuba. We are certain that you will find them to be as interesting as we
do.
Back in 1987, no one associated with this ABC World News textbook project
imagined that the series would have such longevity and touch the lives of so many
students. We were honored that the series received the LET Award for Innovative
Teaching Materials in 2010. We believe that adopting authentic broadcast news
materials for classroom use is a powerful way to build English skills while also
helping students to become more knowledgeable about world affairs and to
develop the critical thinking skills necessary for all young people in today’s
increasingly interconnected world. Many of our students also tell us that using the
text was good preparation for the TOEFL and TOEIC exams and job hunting.
To the students using ABC World News 19, remember that the skills that you
develop using this book can be applied to other news shows, even when the

ャンルのニュースも多数収録した。
この21世紀に世界はさらに情報化の道を歩もうとしている。特にますます身近
になりつつあるのが，インターネットや，衛星放送，ケーブルテレビを利用し
ての音声・映像情報である。この様なメディアを利用すれば日本にいながら
も，アメリカからの英語ニュースを24時間リアルタイムで見ることが出来る。
英語学習面でも情報のマルチメディア化に対応できる準備をしておく必要があ
るのではないだろうか。
本書はアメリカの３大ネットワークの一つである，ABC放送からのテレビニュ
ース番組を録画し，それを文字化した上で，テキスト用に編集したものであ
る。収録したニュースは米国東部標準時間夕方６時30分から毎日放送されてい
るABC放送の看板ニュース番組“World News Tonight”である。
本書のABC World Newsのシリーズは1999年に始まった。それ以前1987年か
ら10年間以上にわたって続いた前身のTV News from the U.S.A. 同様，本シリ
ーズは毎回たいへん好評を頂いている。このアメリカABC放送のニュースを利
用したテキストは，今回で通算24冊目になる。2010年度には外国語教育メデ
ィア学会（LET）から，本教材の開発に対して，LET学会賞の「教材開発賞」
を受賞する栄誉を頂いた。今後もさらに教材開発の努力を続けていきたい。
本書では，ニュースを収録した映像を専用のウェブサイト上で見ることができ
る。ぜひ，学生諸君にはこの映像を繰り返し見てもらいたい。アメリカの家庭
で，ふだんアメリカ人が見ているその同じニュースが見られるので，「生の迫
