Celebrating Acts of Peace and Reconciliation
Darwin Memorial Uniting Church is a memorial to all service personnel and civilians who have
been involved in or affected by acts of war. The service flags displayed in the entry of the
church bear witness to this significant role of the church in the Darwin community. This is an
honourable role for the church as it seeks to serve the wider community. It can and should also
be a place, a community, where acts of peace and reconciliation are acknowledged,
remembered, displayed and celebrated.
Darwin was bombed on 19 February 1942 by the same Japanese Imperial Naval force which
devastated Hawaii and led by the same commander Mitsuo Fuchida (whose story can also be
woven into the Fujita reconciliation which follows the bombing of Darwin story). Bombing
continued across Darwin and the Top End for many months after the initial attack.
While media coverage at the time of the bombing of Darwin appears to have been as thorough
as was possible during WWII, it does not seem to have entered Australia’s consciousness until
relatively recent times when there have been publications and events which have drawn
widespread attention to the bombing of Darwin.
In a welcome recent development, the Darwin Military Museum has been established at East
Point. It tells many stories of the defence of Darwin and acts of war to which Australians were
exposed on their own soil.
The destruction caused by the 1942 attacks to land-based facilities and accommodation were
rectified within a reasonable time. However, the eight ships sunk in Darwin harbour were not
salvaged until about twenty years later.
Ironically the salvage was done by a Japanese company. Amazingly this sparked a remarkable
act of peace and reconciliation by Mr Ryugo Fujita of the Fujita Salvage Company.
Encouraged by his Japanese (Christian) church, the Japanese Ambassador to Australia, the
architect of the newly constructed Darwin United Church and his own pacifist inclination, Fujita
decided to fashion seventy-seven bronze crosses crafted from metal salvaged from the MV
Zealandia. He donated these to Darwin Memorial Uniting Church to be permanently displayed
as a sign of peace and reconciliation. Through the church this was also intended as a gift of
peace and reconciliation to the whole Darwin community and indeed Australia as a whole.

As a firm sign of on-going dedication to these principles the Fujita family has maintained its
connection with Darwin Memorial Uniting Church and the Darwin community. In a recent public
ceremony, Mr Fujita charged his daughter with responsibility for continuing this into the future.
The crosses are displayed on the pulpit, communion rail and at the ends of each pew. With
some changes being made in the way the church is furnished, a number of crosses are now in
temporary storage.
The act of war on Australia which was the bombing of Darwin is now well established in the
Australian psyche, the act of peace which followed that war is almost completely unknown –
even in Darwin. This ought not to continue to be so. One of the delights and privileges as a
Christian community is to celebrate God’s goodness to the community in which the church
exists; when an act of peace and reconciliation happens, it ought to benefit the whole
community in Darwin, across the entire Australian nation and beyond.
Therefore, members of the Darwin Memorial Church strongly believe that the crosses as gifts of
peace and reconciliation must be shared with Darwin and the wider Australian community.
This is the right time to put the crosses on public display to complement the Military Museum to
tell stories which are not told there. This initiative is being actively supported by the Fujita
family. On-going discussions with the Japanese community in Darwin are also occurring.
Plans have been developed and initial concepts are in place for an arresting display of the
crosses and related artefacts. The youth of Darwin Memorial Uniting Church are shaping and
have begun work on a peace garden as an integral component. These and other elements,
such as the story of commander Mitsuo Fuchida, are being shaped into a coherent whole
intended to be accessible to Darwin residents as well as the thousands of Australian and
overseas visitors to Darwin.
Preliminary discussions with suitably talented people who are able to give shape to an arresting
display and peace garden have met with their enthusiastic, creative and competent response. It
is worth noting that these people were initially quite ignorant of the peace stories and were
immediately touched by the potential for interest and good of the displays of these remarkable
stories and artefacts to the wider community.
In addition to seed funding from the Fujita family and devoted voluntary input at all levels and
contributions in kind, we are seeking to secure funds which would be required to fully realise the
plans for a striking display of acts of peace with which our city and church have been blessed.
These are gifts which we can and should be liberally shared with the wider community of Darwin
and beyond.

平和と和解の行為の称賛
ダーウィン・メモリアル教会は戦争に関わったり影響を受けた兵士や民間人すべての人のため
の追悼の場所です。広くコミュニティー全体に奉仕する目的を持った教会という役割を担って
いることは光栄なことです。
また平和、和解への貢献を認め、記憶し、表示し、そして祝う場所となりうる場所であり、ま
たそうあるべきです。
ダーウィンは、ハワイを荒廃させた日本国帝国軍の海軍と同じ部隊により攻撃されました。爆
撃を率いたのも同じく淵田美津夫氏です。（この話もダーウィン空爆に続く藤田氏による和解
の話の中に編みこまれます）最初の爆撃の後、攻撃はダーウィンと豪州北部全土にわたり、長
く続きました。
ダーウィンの爆撃時のメディアの報道は、第二次世界大戦中に可能な範囲に報道されましたが
、比較的最近になってダーウィン空爆に関する報道やイベントが広がるまではオーストラリア
人の意識には入っていませんでした。
イーストポイントにはダーウィン軍事博物館が作られ、オーストラリア国土がさらされたダー
ウィンでの国防の戦いを伝えることになったのは、歓迎すべき展開です。
陸上施設や宿泊施設に1942年の攻撃によって引き起こされた破壊は、戦後間もなく修理されま
した。しかし、ダーウィン港に沈んだ8船は、約20年たっても引き揚げられませんでした。。
皮肉なことにこの引き揚げ作業は日本の会社によって行われました。驚くべきことに、この藤
田サルベージ会社の藤田柳吾氏が、平和と和解の口火を切ることとなったのです。
日本のでの藤田氏の（クリスチャンの）教会、在豪日本国大使、新たに建設されたダーウィン
教会の建築家、そして自身の平和主義とに促され、藤田氏は、MV
Zealandiaから引き揚げた金属から７７のブロンズの十字架を作ることを決めました。これには
平和と和解の贈り物が教会に送られましたが、実際にはこの教会を通しダーウィンとオースト
ラリア全土への贈り物という意図があったのです。
この信念を貫き続けるという証として、藤田家はダーウィンメモリアル教会との関わりをその
後も続けています。先日行われたセレモニーで、藤田銑一郎氏（藤田氏のご子息）は、将来に
向けてご息女が責任を持つことと任命しました。

十字架は説教壇、聖体拝領、それぞれのベンチの両端に飾られています。教会内の模様替えの
結果、数個の十字架は暫定的に倉庫に入っています。
現在ダーウィン空爆というオーストラリアへの戦闘行為はオーストラリア人の心に刻まれまし
たが、その後の平和への行為は、ダーウィンでさえもほとんど忘れ去られています。このまま
にしておくことはできません。キリスト教のコミュニティーとしての喜びと特権は、教会が存
在するコミュニティーに対する神の善意を祝福することなのです。
ゆえに、ダーウィンメモリアル教会の教徒はこれら平和と和解の贈り物である十字架がダーウ
ィン、そしてオーストラリアでも共有されるべきであると信じています。
あまり知られていなかったダーウィン空爆をオーストラリアに知らせた戦争博物館の足りない
部分を補うためにも、この十字架を公に展示するにはとても良い時期だと思います。このよう
な取り組みは藤田家の方々にも強く支持されています。現地の日本人コミュニティーとの話し
合いも持たれています。
この計画は発展し、人目を引くような十字架の展示と関係する装飾を配置することです。ダー
ウィンメモリアル教会の若い信者たちは、この計画にとって欠かすことのできない人々で、す
でに平和公園に具体化に着手し、作業に取り掛かっています。また他の要素もあり、たとえば
淵田美津夫氏の話などダーウィンの人々だけでなく、オーストラリア人や海外から訪れた方々
も気軽に見ることが出来るように展示される予定です。
平和公園の展示方法の準備段階の話し合いでは、情熱的で創造的、才能豊かなアイディアが生
まれました。これらに関わった人々は最初はこの平和と和解の話については全く知らなかった
と言うことは注目に値するべきことです。彼らはこの素晴らしい話とこのプロジェクトをコミ
ュニティに提供することによって生じる将来的な影響とそれがもたらす利益を理解し感銘を受
けました。
更に、藤田家からの基金と、ボランティアによるによる多種にわたる支援を更に良いものとす
るためにも、私たちの教会と同市が平和の行為を伝える機会を与えられたことを外に発信する
為に展示するための資金の提供をお願いします。この贈り物はダーウィンの地域社会と、そし
てそれを超えた大きなコミュニティ全体で共有されるべきものです。
