めんどくさい　is a widelyused word in Japanese.
And it is also one of the
words I am often asked
‘How do you say this in English?’. If you look
it up in a dictionary, it will tell you めんどくさい
means ‘troublesome’ and ‘bothersome’. Of
course, these are perfectly accurate translations,
however, in real conversation, there is a more
natural expression we use: pain in the neck!
Washing dishes is such a pain in the neck; I have
to fold laundry again?! What a pain in the neck!
(Can you tell I don’t like doing housework!!) I
did a bit of research about where this idiomatic
expression came from and all I could find was
that it originated around the turn of the 20th
century. Actually pain in the neck was created
to ‘clean up’ a slightly cruder version of the
same expression: pain in the butt. I guess in those
days this was considered inappropriate and thus
pain in the neck came about. Nowadays, both
expressions are used pretty equally I think. A pain
in either location would be most troublesome,
don’t you think? So please try it out! What do

「mendokusai」という言葉が
日本で良く使われます。そのた
め、英語ではどういうのかと良
く聞かれる表現の一つです。辞
書をひけば、「troublesome」
「bothersome」と言う語があ
り、全く正確な訳なのですが、
実際の会話の中では、「a pain
in the neck」という表現がより
自然な感じだと思います。たとえば、食器洗いはめん
どくさい（a pain in the neck）。とか、また洗濯
物たたまなくちゃ。あーあ (a pain in the neck)と
か。（家事が好きじゃないのがばれちゃいますね。）
この表現が、どこから生まれたのかちょっと調べてみ
ると、２０世紀の変わり目ぐらいに生まれたようで、
同じような表現で当時pain in the buttと言う表現が
あったのですが、butt（お尻）という語が下品とと
らえられたのか、それを綺麗な表現にして生まれた
のがpain in the neck のようです。今では２つの表
現とも同じように使われているようです。neck(首）
butt(お尻）どちらの苦痛がやっかいですか？さてさ
