The$year$2004$marks$the$simultaneous$beginning$of$ALLEX,$a$new$organization$devoted$to$language$learning$and$ educational$exchange,$and$the$termination$of$its$predecessor,$EXCHANGE:$JAPAN,$which$ceased$operation$after$ sixteen$years$of$highly$successful$activity$in$order$to$undergo$administrative$reorganization$and$expansion.$ $ EXCHANGE:$JAPAN$was$a$remarkable$organization.$I$was$privileged$to$serve$as$Academic$Director$of$ EXCHANGE:$JAPAN’s$Teacher$Training$Institute,$which$offered$the$training$program$each$summer,$on$the$ campus$of$Bryn$Mawr$College,$to$groups$of$highly$motivated$and$deeply$committed$Japanese$participants.$ $ The$orientation$of$the$summer$program$was$so$different$from$what$the$participants$had$expected$that$many$ experienced$a$period$of$initial$amazement$and$disbelief,$but$gradually$they$found$that$everything$began$to$make$ very$good$sense.$They$became$aware,$and$willing$to$concede,$that$American$students,$already$fluent$native$ speakers$of$English$and$consciously$learning$Japanese$as$a$foreign$language,$do$indeed$view$the$Japanese$ language$very$differently$from$native$speakers,$who$acquired$it$totally$outside$of$consciousness,$as$a$first$ language.$To$consider$Japanese$language$and$culture$and$effective$teaching$techniques$through$the$eyes$of$an$ American$student$was$an$unanticipated$and$thoroughly$fascinating$experience.$“This$has$been$the$most$exciting$ summer$of$my$life”;$“This$programs$has$completely$changed$my$way$of$thinking”;$“This$has$been$a$lifeTchanging$ experience$for$me”:$Such$comments$surprised$the$staff$at$first,$but$they$recurred$year$after$year,$as$each$class$ completed$its$training.$ $ The$proof$of$the$impact$of$the$program$was$the$number$of$participants$who$changed$their$field$of$specialization$ as$a$result.$After$completing$the$training$program$and$spending$two$years$as$Japanese$language$instructors,$a$ surprising$number$decided$they$wanted$to$make$Japanese$language$pedagogy$their$life’s$work.$At$the$present$ time,$EXCHANGE:$JAPAN$alumni/ae$are$members$of$college/university$faculties$in$all$parts$of$the$U.S.$as$well$as$ in$Japan$TT$and$even$in$Singapore.$Some$moved$immediately$into$lecturer$positions$(for$example,$at$Cornell$ University,$MIT,$Washington$University$in$St.$Louis,$and$Williams$College)$and$others$pursued$advanced$ graduate$programs$to$the$PhD$level$and$are$now$professors$in$tenureTtrack$positions$$(for$example,$at$Hamilton$ College,$Portland$State$University,$University$of$California$at$Davis,$and$University$of$Illinois).$ $ ALLEX$will$build$on$the$successes$of$EXCHANGE:$JAPAN,$retaining$all$its$best$features$and,$at$the$same$time,$ introducing$constant$improvements$that$reflect$advances$in$the$field$of$language$pedagogy.$I$am$happy$to$point$ out$that$the$outstanding$faculty$of$EXCHANGE:$JAPAN,$which$included$some$of$the$most$eminent$specialists$in$ Japanese$language$pedagogy$in$the$U.S.,$will$continue$as$the$faculty$of$ALLEX.$We$will$also$strengthen$our$ connection$with$our$predecessor$by$welcoming$graduates$of$the$EXCHANGE:$JAPAN$program$as$members$of$ the$ALLEX$Alumni/ae$Association,$to$be$formed$in$2005,$immediately$following$the$first$teacher$training$program$ offered$by$ALLEX.$ $ The$entire$ALLEX$faculty$and$staff$looks$forward$to$a$dynamic$future$that$will$significantly$advance$both$ effective$Japanese$language$study$and$opportunities$for$educational$exchange.$$ $ With$all$good$wishes,$ $ Eleanor$H.$Jorden$ The$Mary$Donlon$Alger$Professor$of$Linguistics,$Emerita,$Cornell$University$ Academic$Director,$Alliance$for$Language$Learning$and$Educational$Exchange$(ALLEX)$$ 3 ………………………..… ……...……………………………………………..…….……………………. 2 3 Message of Appliciation ……...……………………………………………..…….. 4 1.
