Hello everyone! It’s Nobeoka City Hall’s CIR,
Devin Recchio! Lately it’s been perfect weather for a
walk, hasn’t it? The sun isn’t too bright and there
are few clouds, so I’ve decided to get some therapy
time in by enjoying the blue sky and breathing in the
fresh air, and the frequency with which I take walks
is increasing of late. That said, when this newsletter
is actually released it will probably already be rainy
season and that will not be the case anymore, but
that’s how I’m feeling now in any case. Though I
want to tell everyone to enjoy the weather while you can,
it’s probably already too late. Now that I think of it, I realize
I’ve been rather obsessed with rainy season. I feel like that’s
all I’ve been talking about since last month. It seems rainy
season left quite an impression on me last year.
That aside, around now there are many ALTs and CIRs
who are ending their time on the JET program and are extremely busy, enduring the excitement and uncertainty of
taking the next step in their lives, looking for new work,
making arrangements with their successors, and preparing
to move. They don’t even have time to reflect on their time
in Japan! Every year some ALTs and CIRs find themselves in
that position, and unfortunately, this year I will be one of
them. At the beginning of August, with a sad heart, I will
have to say goodbye to Nobeoka. That’s still a little bit of a
way’s away, so I will save my farewells for my last newsletter
next month, but I just wanted to let you all know now.
Okay, so in Japan high school students have a graduation field trip, and this is graduation season back in the United States, so I want to talk a little bit about the American
equivalent of the graduation field trip, the high school prom.
The prom is a dance party that focuses on the graduating
class (4th years in the United States), and is an important
event for many high school students. Everyone feels differently about prom and for some, it’s their last chance to hang
out and have fun with their friends, while for others it’s a
battleground to determine the pecking order in school.
The event that gets the most attention during prom is
the crowning ceremony. Before the end of the night, everyone votes and one couple is selected as the “king” and
“queen” of prom. Then, a small ceremony is held to “crown”
them. Though I’m calling it a ceremony, all they do is call the
couple to the front of the venue, put the crown on them,
and have them do a little speech. I don’t think there are too
many people that take it all that seriously. As I recall, a large
portion of my peers at prom would have been embarrassed
to be picked as the king or queen.
Lately, depending on the region, gay couples have been
acknowledged and it’s possible to have a “king and king” or
“queen and queen” combination as well, though centering

言いたくても、もう遅いでしょう。私は梅雨のことがや
たら気になっているようですね。先月からずっと梅雨の
ことばかり話している気がします。去年の梅雨はよっぽ
ど印象に残ったみたいです。

最近、地域によっては同性愛者も認められるようにな
それはともかくとして、この時期に任期を終える予定
の国際交流員（CIR）と外国語指導助手（ALT）は色々な
ことで忙しくなります。人生の次の一歩を踏み出すワク
ワク感と不安に耐えながら、転職活動や、後任者とのや
り取りや、引っ越しの支度などをし、日本で過ごした時
間を振り返る余裕もなくバタバタする人が多いのではな
いかと思います。そういうALTとCIR達は毎年出てくる訳
ですが、残念ながら、今年、私もその一人になります。
今年の８月の上旬に、私は、寂しい思いを胸に、延岡の
皆さんにさようならを言わなければなりません。それは
まだ少し先のことになりますから、また来月、私の最後
のニュースレターで挨拶をしたいと思いますが、その一
報だけ、書くことにしました。
さて、日本の高校には卒業遠足というものがあります
が、この季節はアメリカの卒業の季節だということもあ
るので、卒業遠足に該当するアメリカの行事の「High
School Prom」（ハイ・スクール・プロム）について少し
話したいと思います。このプロムとは、卒業する学年
（アメリカでは高校４年）を中心に行われるダンスパー
ティのことで、多くの高校生にとって大事な行事になっ
ています。学生によってプロムについての意識がそれぞ
れ大きく異なっていて、高校の友達と遊ぶ最後の機会と
して考える学生がいれば、学校の中で自分の地位を競う
場として考える学生がいます。
プロムの最も注目されるイベントは戴冠式です。それ
は閉会前に行われる式のようなもので、投票で選ばれた
一つのカップルがプロムの「キング」と「クイーン」に
なって、王冠を授けられます。式と言っても、ただ二人
を会場の前に呼んで、王冠を被せて、ちょっとしたス
ピーチをしてもらうだけです。真面目に考える人はあま
りいないと思います。振り返ると、私のプロムではキン
グとクイーンに選ばれることを恥ずかしく思った人が参
加者の大半だったような記憶があります。

ルのプロムへの参加を全面的に拒否する高校もアメリカ
の南部と中央部を中心にまだあります。そうやって差別
することを憲法に違反していると言う人が沢山います
が、その地域の文化で許されているから、学生が訴訟を
起こさない限り、学校はプロムの取り決めを作ることに
関して、やれるだけやりたい放題だというところがあり
ます。同じ国なのに、地域によって、社会変化のスピー
ドの差はそれだけ大きいということです。

prom to gay couples. There are many who say that such
bans are unconstitutional, but it is not looked down upon in
the culture of these regions, so unless a student files a lawsuit, the schools are allowed to do what they want without
any consequences. It is all one country, but there is a big gap
in the pace of social change depending on the region.
For many high school students, prom is their first
chance to wear formal clothing. I think that no small number
of men who wear a suit for the first time become frustrated
with having to think of all the different things you have to
when picking out a suit, like what combination of colors to
wear or whether or not the suit fits your body type, and
many end up getting advice from their family and friends
and put something together half assed. At the very least,
that was the case for myself and many of my friends. In contrast, there are men who are very knowledgeable about
fashion, who enjoy picking out their clothes and go to prom
with a combination that shows how good their sense is.
As for women, of course there are many who wear
dresses to prom. Some carefully consider what makeup and
shoes to pair with their dresses and put a lot of effort into
their preparations so they can show themselves off at their
most beautiful. There are also those who don’t spend too
much time thinking about it and just throw on a nice dress
and have a nice, light hearted, fun time as well. In other
words, everyone has a different way of thinking and a different way of enjoying prom.
With all the time and effort people put (or don’t put)
into their prom suits and dresses, it has become common to
take prom photos to preserve the moment. People might
get together at someone’s house before prom and take
group pictures, and then all go together to the venue. Others might prefer something more personal, and just get together with their dates and take couples pictures. Regardless, for many of those who participate in prom, it is important to have pictures taken to preserve the memory. In
this way, for some, prom can be a sort of big moment in
their lives. In the long run, I think most of us forget about it
pretty quickly, but in the small world of a high school kid, it
can be a moment of some significance.
Chances are pretty high that if you watch a movie
about American high school kids, the topic of prom will
come up, but movie depictions are generally quite exaggerated, so it’s best not to take them too seriously. All prom
really is, is a party centering around the graduating class and
their dates, where the high school reserves the venue and
arranges the catering. Even still, I think prom gets a lot of
attention in American culture. Personally, I think it’s all a
little odd, but them’s the facts.
Did you know about prom before you read this article?
Does the tradition of picking a “king” and “queen” seem a
little silly to you? Or does it sound like fun? I think it goes a
bit counter to what you would expect in Japan, where praising everyone equally tends to be more emphasized, but
what do you think? If you’re interested in learning more
about high school traditions in the United States, please do
some reading on it! I’m sure you’ll learn a lot of unexpected

多くの高校生にとって、プロムは初めてフォーマルな
服を着る機会になっています。スーツを初めて着る男性
は、色の組み合わせや、スーツと体系の相性、色々考え
ることにうんざりして、友達や家族に相談しながら何と
なくいい加減な感じで服を選ぶ人が少なくないと思いま
す。少なくとも、私と私の友達の多くはそんな感じでし
た。一方で、ファッションに詳しい男性は服を選ぶのを
楽しんで、とてもセンスのいい着こなしで行く人がいま
す。
女性については当然ドレスを着て行く人が多く、自分
の最も美しい姿を見せようと、メイクと靴とドレスの組
み合わせを考えながら色々工夫して、一生懸命準備する
人がいます。あまり難しく考えないで、ただいいドレス
を着て、気軽な感じで楽しむ人もいます。人はそれぞれ
違う考え方や楽しみ方をしている訳です。
プロムの準備には相当な努力と時間がかかります（場
合によってはかからないかもしれませんが）から、多く
の人は必ず記念写真を撮ることにしています。友達の家
に集まって、プロムが始まる前にグループ写真を撮って
から、皆でプロムに向かう人もいます。あるいは、もう
少し親密感のある雰囲気を好んで、彼女か彼氏に会っ
て、二人だけの記念写真を撮る人もいます。どっちにし
ろ、プロムに参加する人にとって、その思い出を忘れな
いように、記念写真を撮るのが大事な習慣になっている
のです。このように、人によってはプロムは長く記憶に
残る瞬間になる可能性があります。すぐに忘れる人が沢
山いるとは思いますが、高校生の小さな世界の中で、プ
ロムは重要なイベントになっていると思います。
アメリカの高校生を描く映画やドラマを見たら、この
プロムの話が出てくることが多くありますが、映画は大
げさな描写が多いので、あまり真面目に受け止めない方
がいいと思います。所詮、高校が会場を押えて、仕出し
料理を手配し、卒業生と彼らのパートナーを中心にパー
ティを開くだけのことです。それでも、このプロムとい
う行事はアメリカの文化にかなり大きく映っていると思
います。個人的にそのことを少し不思議に思いますが、
事実は事実です。
この記事を読む前にプロムのことを知っていました
か。「キング」と「クイーン」を選ぶ習慣は少しおかし
いと思いましたか。それとも楽しそうだと思いました
か。皆を平等に称えることを重視する日本の社会に少し
反対するところがあると思いますが、皆さんはどう思い
ますか。アメリカの高校の伝統と習慣についてもっと知
りたければ、ぜひ色々調べてみてください。沢山の意外
なことに気が付くと思いますよ！では、梅雨の間に雨が
止む時間を逃さずに出来るだけ楽しんでください！また

アメリカの神話コーナー
American Myths
America has a relatively short history. However, it is
also constantly absorbing and combining cultures and ways
of thinking from all over the world. Due to this, myths and
fairy tales that were born in other countries are constantly
becoming American myths and fairy tales. In addition,
there are also myths and fairy tales that were born in America itself. This is “American Myths,” where I present a new
American myth or fairy tale each month.
The story that I present in this newsletter is a South
African fairy tale.
アメリカは比較的歴史が短い国です。しかし、その
一方でたくさんの国から寄せられた人々の文化や考え
方を吸収し、複合している国でもあります。従って、
アメリカ以外の色々な国で生まれた神話やおとぎ話
は、常にアメリカの神話やおとぎ話になりつつありま
す。アメリカで生まれた神話やおとぎ話もあります。
こちらはその数々の神話やおとぎ話を毎月一つずつ紹
介する「アメリカの神話コーナー」です。
今回紹介する話は南アフリカのおとぎ話です。
The Monkey’s Fiddle
お猿さんのバイオリン
One day, Monkey became so hungry he couldn’t
stand it any longer, and decided to leave his country to
go to another land, mingle with strangers, and look for
work of some kid. In Monkey’s land, there was not a
bulb nor bean nor scorpion nor bug to be found, for they
were all used up, down to the last one. Fortunately, his
uncle, Orangutan, who lived in a distant land, offered to
let him stay at his place for some time, so Monkey decided to take him up on his offer, and set off to Orangutan’s
house.
お猿さんは、ある日、お腹があまりにも空き過ぎ
て、我慢できなくなった為、自分の国をあとに
し、別の国の見知らぬ人達に紛れ込み、仕事を探
すことにした。自分の国では球根も、豆も、サソ
リも虫も、何もかもが使い切っていたのである。
幸いなことに、遠く離れた別の国に住んでいる叔
父のオランウータンは少しの間泊めてくれると
言ったので、お猿さんは言葉に甘えることにし、
オランウータンの家に向かって出掛けた。
After Monkey worked at Orangutan’s house for a
while, he decided he wanted to go back home, and so he
prepared his things to leave, when the great Orangutan
handed him a fiddle and bow, saying, “If you play this
fiddle, you can make anyone you wish dance, and this
bow and arrow does not miss its mark. If you so wish,
you could slay any creature with one shot.” Monkey accepted these magnificent gifts quite happily.
しばらくオランウータンの家で働いたら、帰り
たいという気持ちが湧いてきたので、お猿さんは
帰る支度をし始めた。その時、偉大なるオラン
ウータンは仕事の報酬として、バイオリンと弓矢
を渡し、こう言った：「このバイオリンを弾くと
誰でも躍らせることができる。そして、この弓矢
は的を外すことはない。望めば何でも一発で仕留
められる。」お猿さんはこの素晴らしい贈り物を
喜んで受け取った。
The first person he met when he returned to his
land was Brer Wolf. He was an old wolf, and he told
Monkey all about what had happened back home after
he left. Then, when he was done with that, Brer Wolf

After they had enjoyed their meal together, the
wolf was overcome with jealousy, and rather than thank
Monkey, he demanded the bow and arrow from him.
Monkey of course refused, but the wolf was not ready to
give up, and he tried to intimidate him by saying he was
stronger than Monkey. That’s when Jackal happened to
pass by and Brer Wolf told him that Monkey had stolen
the bow and arrow from
him.

猿さんは弓矢のことを説明し、鹿が視野にさえ入
れば一発で仕留めてあげると言った。ブレア狼が
鹿を見つけてお猿さんに報告した時、お猿さんは
弓矢を用意していたので、鹿をすぐに射倒した。
二人が美味しく食事をした後、ブレア狼は感謝
するどころか、嫉妬のあまり、弓矢をちょうだい
と言い出した。当然、お猿さんは断ったが、ブレ
ア狼は諦める気がないらしく、自分がお猿さんよ
り強いと言って脅しをかけた。その時、ジャッカ
ルがたまたま二人の前を通りかかったところ、ブ
レア狼は弓矢をお猿さんに盗まれたとジャッカル
に訴えた。

りながら回っている間にお猿さんの近くに寄った

「欲しくないもん」とお猿さんはキッパリ言っ
た。「でも、判決を取り消して、僕の弓矢を返し
てくれた上で、狼が僕から弓矢を盗もうとしたこ

れないな」
“Don’t want it!” Monkey replied flatly. “But if you
revoke your sentence, return my bow to me, and the
wolf acknowledges that he tried to steal it from me, I
suppose I could consider stopping.”
“I acknowledge it! I acknowledge it!” The wolf cried

デビュタント文化
デビュタントとは、昔の欧州の上流階級社会の女性の成人式で使われた本人を指す言葉であ
る。成人式と言うが、実際の内容は会合のようなもので、目的は結婚できる歳になった女性
（デビュタント）を好ましい結婚相手に紹介することであった。デビュタントは上流階級社会
に馴染む為に様々な細かいエチケットを覚えなければならなかった。どのように食器を扱うべ
きか、どのように笑うと受け入れてもらえるか、踊りの仕方などを学び、細かい教育を受け
た。そういうデビュタントの文化は欧州から北米に渡って、様々な変化を成し遂げた。南部の
お金持ち社会と連邦政府の政治家社会ではデビュタントの文化が未だに存続しているが、目的
と機能は昔の欧州のと大きく異なっており、女性の結婚相手を探す代わりに、現在では、慈善事業の募金と自分の履
歴書を充実させることがデビュタントになると決心する主な目的となっている。このデビュタント文化がプロムの由
来になっており、アメリカの文化に大きく影響していると言っても過言ではない。とはいえ、アメリカ人にデビュタ
ントとは何か知っているか聞くと、「分からない」という回答が返ってくる可能性が高い。なぜなら、デビュタント
文化はお金持ち社会にしか存在しない現象であり、一般人はその代わりにプロムの文化を持っているからである。ア
メリカは階級社会ではないと言われているが、これを見てそれを疑問に思う人が少なくないはずだ。語源に関して
は、デビュタントは初出場と意味する「デビュー」（Debut）から来ている。
