ためにいろいろな設備を持っているのです」

かるヒット商品を数々手がけてきた。ツルっ
とした合繊のイメージを払拭し、梳毛合繊の
先がけ的商品をつくった。光の反射を防ぐ糸

Samples guide product development
Founded in 1890, Matsubun Textile has watched the flowering of Japan’s textile industry as it
developed from habutae through rayon to synthetics. And, it has left its mark as the industry’s great trend
turned toward exportation and mass production. The old wooden tile-roofed women’s dormitory built in
1933 still stands on the grounds of the Katsuyama Mill. In those bygone days, when the company embraced
mass employment, 300 women lived in the dorm. This historical building, designated as an industrial legacy
of modernization in Fukui Prefecture, now houses nearly 40 years’worth of cloth samples and specification
files.
This is one of the largest rapier loom mills in Japan.“Today, as in the past, fabric is made by weaving
the warp and the weft,”says Matsubun Textile president Shintaro Koizumi.“What is different is the thread.
Each company conducts research and makes excellent thread. If it were all weaved the same, the result would
end up being the same. We process thread in a variety of ways. That is why we have such large facilities.”
The company has produced many recognizable ladies’and men’s hit products. Sweeping away the slippery
image of synthetics, it made innovative worsted synthetic products. Matsubun Textile is also the company
that provides formalwear cloth with a striking blackness made from a thread that prevents light reflection.
It has demonstrated its uniqueness by adjusting thread processing to create a beautiful drape and other
characteristics. The company keeps samples and specification files for each client, providing hints for the
next development. Older samples are relied on when discussing aesthetics with a customer, such as“a little
softer,”or“make it feel mellow.”Development secrecy is protected for each company under a rule that only
a customer’s representatives can use archived material. Matsubun Textile makes 2,000 prototypes a year,
with those from the last 25 years being especially important to the company.
