平成22年10月１日現在で実施した平成22年国勢調査の結果については，
「平成22年国勢
調査報告」
（第１巻～第７巻）のほか，
「抽出速報集計結果」，
「我が国人口・世帯の概観」，
「日本人口地図」などの刊行物等により公表，提供してきたところですが，
「日本の人口・
世帯」は，これらの公表結果の内容等を総合的にまとめて，平成22年国勢調査の最終報
告書として刊行するものです。
「日本の人口・世帯」は，結果の解説を主とする「上巻－解説・資料編」と，主要統
計表を収録した「下巻－統計表編」の２分冊からなっており，本書は前者に当たります。
国勢調査は，我が国の人口の状況を明らかにし，各種行政施策その他の基礎資料を得
ることを目的として実施する国の最も基本的な統計調査で，大正９年の第１回調査以来，
ほぼ５年ごとに実施しており，平成22年国勢調査はその19回目に当たります。
これらの統計が，国や地方公共団体の社会福祉施策，雇用対策，防災対策など，21世
紀における豊かな地域づくりを進めていく上での基礎資料として活用されることを願う
ものです。
本書の刊行に際し，今回の国勢調査に御回答いただいた皆様に心から感謝の意を表す
る次第です。

PREFACE
The results of the 2010 Population Census have been published in the reports consisting of
seven volumes. Besides these reports, “Results of Preliminary Sample Tabulation”, “OVERVIEW
OF POPULATION AND HOUSEHOLDS OF JAPAN” and “Population Map Series” have been
published. This final report “Population and Household of Japan” consists of two volumes :
“Summary Report of the 2010 Population Census” including descriptive analyses of the census
results and related documents, and “Statistical Tables of the 2010 Population Census” presenting
the main statistical tables selected from the regular reports above and some results of earlier censuses linked to 2010 definition.
The Population Census in Japan has been conducted almost every five years since 1920, the
2010 Population Census being the nineteenth. The statistics obtained through the population census provide the state of Japan’s population to be used for a variety of administrative and analytical purposes.
These statistics are expected to be utilized in many fields of policy making including social
welfare, employment, prevention of disasters, etc., which are essential factors for the prosperous
society in the 21st century.
On this occasion, I wish to express my deep appreciation to all of those who cooperated in the
census-taking.
