● 1) This statement might imply
that all other men in the company
are not in their thirties. Moreover,
there is nothing that tells us the
man is the writer’s boss -- a fact that
is important to the attitude of the
writer.（その会社には30代の男性は
他にいないという意味にもとれます。
また「上司」が訳されていません）
● 2) ‘ The personal contact’ is rather
ambiguous and is singular. I think
the writer is talking about other
people being involved in the hiring
process.（the personal contact はあ
いまいで、
「１回のみの会合」による
「個人的な接触」を意味します。一般
的に言えば、
「コネ」は第三者が介在
するので、contacts やconnections
のように複数形にします）
● 3) Although not wrong, there are
better options than the use of ‘seriously.’ These include ‘doesn’ t take
/ do his job seriously,’ ‘diligently,’
or ‘earnestly.’（誤りではないですが、
ほかにより良い表現があります）
● 4) This is a description of his
‘attitude’ and so the use of ‘in which’
or ‘ in that’ is OK. However, there
are too many verbs in such a short
space for my liking -- tries to
pretend to work.（attitude の後に
同格を表す that 節は続きません。内
容を説明するには in which ... や in
that ... で続けてください。限られた
スペースに動詞が多すぎます）
● 5) The use of ‘ not at work’ suggests he isn’t physically present in
the office. Perhaps ‘ not really
working’ is closer to the truth.（not
at work は「会社にいない」の意味
です。not really working 「実際に
働いていない」というのが真相に近
いでしょう）
改訂訳⇒ My boss, a man in his
thirties who entered our company
through personal connections with
the president, doesn’t do his job seriously. I feel really disgusted at his

Pop Quiz ５）の正解： A＜B。hilarious は「とても面白い、抱腹絶倒の (extremely funny)」の意味で、funny より面白さの度合いが高い場合に使います。The movie was
hilarious.＝「あの映画は腹を抱えて笑うほど面白かった」。
