"Suica" is a really "helpful IC card" that can be used on JR EAST lines
(The Tokyo, Sendai and Niigata areas), Tokyo Monorail and Rinkai Line
as well as JR WEST lines (Kinki area).

Outline of IC Card Gate System
“Suica” is the name of JR EAST’s
IC card gate system.
Here, we will explain how to use Suica iO cards - from
purchasing, entering/exiting automatic ticket gates and fare
adjusting through to listing the various machines where Suica
cards can be used.
「Suica」とは、ICカードを使用したJR東日本の出改札システムの総称です。

Using Suica
“Suica” is an acronym for “Super Urban
Intelligent CArd”, which also suggests a sense
of “swish, swish travel”.

Suica iO card
Suicaイオカード
Suica is a really useful card that lets the user go through
automatic ticket gates with a touch on the scanner at either
end of a journey and calculates the fare for the sectioned
traveled.(There is no child-fare version of Suica iO card - all
fares are automatically calculated at normal adult prices.)
「Suicaイオカード」は、
自動改札機にタッチして通過することで自動的にご乗車区間の運賃を精算する便利なICカードです。
（Suicaイオカードには、小児用はありません。自動精算は大人普通運賃のみご利用いただけます）
Suica iO cards can be purchased at JR EAST Ticket Offices ("Midori-nomadoguchi") of JR EAST stations in Suica usable areas (Please see the map on
the page 27-28)or from card vending machines.
Suicaイオカードは、Suicaご利用可能エリア（P27-28の地図をご覧ください）内にあるJR東日本の駅の「みどりの窓口」またはカード発売機でお買い
求めください。
Guide to Purchasing Suica Suicaお求めに際してのご案内
Suica is a reusable card – a first-time buyer will need to make a returnable deposit of
500 yen to prevent needless waste of throwaway cards. The deposit is included in the
price of the card (2,000 yen) and will be refunded when the card is returned for
reimbursement purposes, etc.
Suicaは、
ご購入後くりかえしお使いいただけるカードです。カードの使い捨てを防止する観点から、初回購入時には預り金（デポジット）
500円をお預かりいたします。預り金は、発売価格（一枚2,000円）の中に含めてお預かりし、払いもどし等でSuicaをご返却いただく際
にお返しいたします。
Suica iO cards cannot be used for Shinkansen trains.

Suica is available as a one-card-for-one-person system – you cannot use multiple Suica
cards. Likewise, the monetary balance of one Suica card cannot be transferred to another
Suica card.

1 Check the direction of the ticket gate’s traffic arrow.
Touch & Go
To make absolutely sure of smooth gate entry and exit, hold the card flat as you
touch the gate scanner. A “peep” or “peep-peep” sound denotes a successful
scan. As long as Suica makes full contact with the scanner, the card can be used
as it is inside the pass case.
入出場を確実に行うため、Suicaは改札機に水平にしてしっかりタッチさせてください。
「ピッ」または、

※Do not insert the Suica card into ticket slots of gates, as this may

There are two types of simple Suica readers
– Entry and Exit.
●The amount deducted and the remaining balance on your card will be
displayed when you use the card at the reader.

Entering or exiting without using the simple Suica reader may mean
that your Suica card will not operate automatic fare gates.

Gate scanners may not respond if the Suica card is just passed over the top. Be sure to
firmly touch the card against the scanner (do not slide it across), and check the processing
sound to see if your card was scanned correctly.

②Do not jointly touch the scanner with any item that may impede the signal
when using your Suica card.
電波を妨げるものと一緒にタッチしない
Suica handles data via signals, so it may not respond properly if the signal is impeded
by something (metal that electricity passes through, etc.) close to it. Please keep your
Suica card apart from the following items.
Suicaは電波によりデータのやり取りを行うため、電波を妨げるもの（金属など電気を通すもの）がSuicaの近くにあると反応しない場合が
あります。以下のようなものとは離してお持ちください。
■Paper incorporating aluminum foil, such as cigarette packaging and scratch cards
■Metals, such as coins, precious metals and keys
■Silver or white-character rewrite cards, such as point cards
・タバコの銀紙、
スクラッチカードなどアルミ箔を使用した紙
・コイン・貴金属・鍵などの金属類 ・ポイントカードなど、銀色地に白文字のリライトカード
③Do not put other contactless IC cards in the pass case with the Suica card.
他の非接触式ICカードと一緒にパスケースに入れない。
If two or more Suica cards are carried in a pass case, or a contactless IC card
(such as an ICOCA card or credit card with Suica function) is carried together with
Suica, you will not be able to pass through ticket gates.
パスケースにSuicaが2枚以上入っていたり、ICOCAやSuica機能の付いたクレジットカード類など他の非接触式ICカードが一緒に入って
いると、改札機を通ることができません。
④Do not bend the Suica card.
Suicaをゆがめない
If you put an uncovered Suica card into a trouser pocket, it may bend or become
distorted, and thus become stuck when used in ticket vending and fare adjustment
machines. Please carry your Suica card in a pass case, etc.
Suicaをズボンのポケットに直接入れるなどすると、Suicaが折れたり、Suicaがゆがんで券売機や精算機に入れたときに詰まったりすること
があります。パスケースなどに入れてご利用ください。

Money Recharge Service
入金（チャージ）
Suica can be recharged by cash payments at automatic
ticket vending, card vending and fare adjustment machines
that carry the Suica symbol( ). One of four amounts
(1,000, 3,000, 5,000 or 10,000 yen) can be chosen per
single recharge. And the card can be endlessly recharged
to its upper limit balance of 20,000 yen.
Card Records Display and Printout
履歴表示・印字
The records (usage details) of cards with iO card functions can be
checked and printed out at automatic ticket and card vending machines
that carry the Suica symbol( ).
（「Suicaマーク」）のある「自動券売機」と「カード発売機」では、
イオカード機能をお使いになった履歴（ご利用明細）の確認と印字ができます。
※Up to 20 of the most recent transactions are displayable.
履歴表示は、直近のご利用分最大20件まで行います。
※Up to 50 of the most recent transactions are printable. Note that some transactions cannot be
printed out, such as when the card is used more than 21 times in a day or when it is not firmly
touched against gate scanners.
履歴印字は、直近のご利用分最大50件まで行います。なお、1日のご利用が21回以上の場合や改札機にしっかりタッチしていない場合等、一部印
字できないことがあります。
Suicaは、 （「Suica」マーク）のある「自動券売機」
「カード発売機」
「のりこし精算機」で、現金により入金（チャージ）できます。一回の操作で入金
（チャージ）できる金額の単位は、1,000円・3,000円･5,000円･10,000円の4種類で、
カード内残額の上限20,000円までは何度でも入金（チャージ）
することができます。
※Once a batch of transaction records are printed out, it cannot be reprinted. Moreover, transaction
records more than 26-weeks old cannot be printed - so please be sure to print out your transaction
records regularly.
一度印字された履歴は再印字できません。また、
ご利用から26週間を超えた履歴は印字できませんので、
こまめな印字をお願いいたします。
※Some machines do not provide the printout service. And the printout service is not available from
0:50am to 5:00am.

The credit balance left in Suica iO cards can be checked at automatic
ticket and card vending machines and fare adjustment machines that
carry the Suica symbol( ). Also, the automatic ticket gate displays the
credit balance left in Suica iO card.

Suica iO cards can be recharged for reuse.
Boarding
Suicaイオカードは、入金（チャージ）することでくりかえしお使いいただけます。
When you touch and go with a recharged card, the initial basic fare will be
automatically deducted from your card at the boarding station.
The balance between the initial basic fare and the full fare charged for the
section traveled will be automatically calculated and deducted from your
card at the alighting station.
カード内の残額から、
ご乗車の際に「その駅での初乗り運賃」を、
自動的に差し引きます。
次に、下車される際に「下車駅までの運賃と乗車時に差し引いた運賃との差額」を自動的に差し引きます。
※Suica iO cards only automatically calculate basic fares at ordinary adult prices – therefore, please
note that automatic fare adjustments cannot be made for any discount fares or children’s fares.

For Cards with Sufficient Credit Balances

●The initial basic fare (for instance 130 yen at Tokyo Station) will be
deducted from the card at a ticket gate of Tokyo station.
乗車時は、東京駅の改札機にて初乗り運賃（130円）
を差し引きます。
※Suica automatic fare adjustment only calculate shortest-route basic fares for travel within the
Suica usable area – therefore, please note that a fare may differ if the journey involves the use of
lines outside of the Suica area.
●Fare adjustment involving the subtraction of the initial basic fare (130 yen)
from the total basic fare (for instance 450 yen for a ride to Yokohama
Station) to reach a total deduction sum of 320 yen will be calculated at the
destination (Yokohama) ticket gate upon alighting. This means that the user
can “Touch & Go” through ticket gates at both ends of a journey.
Suicaの自動精算は、Suicaご利用可能エリア内のみを経由して移動した場合の最短ルートで運賃を計算します。途中でエリア外の路線を経由し
た場合の運賃とは異なる場合がありますのでご注意ください。
下車時に横浜駅の改札機にて、全区間の運賃（450円）
と130円の差額（320円）
を精算します。入場・出場とも、
「タッチ＆ゴー」で自動改札機を
お通りください。
Suicaイオカードは、大人普通運賃のみ自動精算可能です。各種割引運賃・小児運賃等の自動精算はできませんのでご注意ください。
※Even when riding trains between stations within the Suica usable area, a ticket must be purchased
for any rail line to be used mid-journey outside of the Suica area.

For Cards with Insufficient Credit Balances
カード内の残額が下車時の精算額に満たない場合
Suicaご利用可能エリア内の駅相互間を旅行される場合でも、途中でエリア外の路線を経由される場合は、
あらかじめ乗車券をお買い求めください。
●The initial basic fare (for instance 130 yen at Tokyo Station) will be
deducted from the card at a ticket gate of Tokyo station.
乗車時は、東京駅の改札機にて、初乗り運賃（130円）
を差し引きます。
●However, you will not be able to go through the ticket gate if your card’s
credit balance is less than the basic fare (for instance 320 yen for
Yokohama) required. Here, you need to recharge your Suica card or pay
the fare balance at a fare adjustment machine of Yokohama station.
下車時は、残額が横浜駅での精算額である320円に満たない場合、改札機を通過できません。のりこし精算機での入金（チャージ）または
精算が必要です。

For Cards with Insufficient Credit Balances for Initial Basic Fares
カード内の残額が初乗り運賃に満たない場合
●You cannot go through ticket gates into a station (for instance Tokyo Station) if
your card’s credit balance is less than the initial basic fare. Recharge your card
at a Suica-designated automatic ticket or card vending machine.

残額が初乗り運賃に満たない場合は、東京駅で入場することができません。Suica対応の自動券売機またはカード発売機で入金（チャージ）

About Using “Green Car Suica System”
「グリーン車Suica
システム」の
ご利用について
Local trains' first-class ("Green Car") carriages on the Shonan-Shinjuku
Line, Utsunomiya Line, Takasaki Line, Tokaido Line, Yokosuka Line,
Sobu Line [Rapid Service] can be boarded using “Green Car Suica
System”, which eliminates the need for onboard ticket inspections to
make your Green Car journey more comfortable.
湘南新宿ライン・宇都宮線・高崎線・東海道線・横須賀線・総武快速線の普通列車グリーン車では、Suicaを利用した「グリーン車Suicaシステム」を
ご利用いただくことにより車内改札を省略いたしますので、
より快適にグリーン車をご利用いただけます。

Purchasing a “Suica Green Car Ticket”

To use a first-class ("Green Car") carriage, first purchase a “Suica Green
Car Ticket” using your Suica card at a ticket vending machine carrying the
Suica symbol ( ) at a station where trains with first-class ("Green Car")
stop. (A ticket is only good for one trip on the day of purchase.)
グリーン車をご利用になる前に、
グリーン車停車駅の （「Suica」マーク）のある券売機にて、
「Suicaグリーン券」をお手持ちのSuicaでお買い求
めください。
（当日1回限り有効です）
Touch the “Suica Green Car Ticket Data Scanner” with your Suica card to
light the green lamp above your seat the green lamp is on until the
destination of your “Suica Green Car Ticket”. This system eliminate the
need for onboard ticket inspections.
※Once the train exceeds your paid-for destination, the seat lamp will turn to red (unoccupied).
「Suicaグリーン券」とは、Suica内に記録されたグリーン券情報のことです。
詳しくは、P13の「Suicaグリーン券のお買い求め方法」をご覧ください。

onboard charges.The prepaid fares are only applicable when a “Green Car
Ticket” has been purchased at the station before boarding the train.

●The “Green Car Suica System” only can be used if you purchase a “Suica Green
Car Ticket” in advance of using a first-class ("Green Car") carriage.

“Suica Green Car Ticket” is first-class (“Green Car”) ticket data
(utilized date, travel section and charge) that has been
recorded on your Suica card. A normal paper ticket will not be
issued. These “Suica Green Car Tickets” can be purchased
using the JR EAST issued Suica (“View Suica Card” included)
or the Suica issued by Tokyo Monorail and Rinkai Line.

●The damaged card will be cancelled based on its number (17-digit number
starting with JE displayed at bottom right of reverse side of card).

カードの利用を停止いたします。
●The reissued card will be handed over the following day or later.
翌日以降再発行カードをお渡しいたします。

What should I do when my Suica credit balance is insufficient?
Suicaの残額が足りなかった場合はどうするの？
Either recharge your Suica card or use it together with cash to purchase a normal ticket if your
card has an insufficient credit balance for making a train journey. Likewise, if you find yourself
with an insufficient Suica balance after entering a station via an automatic ticket gate, recharge
your Suica card at a fare adjustment machine and then go on your way. If you are using Suica
for shopping, and you find you have insufficient credit balance, please pay the amount that the
card does not cover in cash, as – apart from certain stores – shops do not provide a recharge
service. (Two or more Suica cards cannot be used together to make payments.)

You can use one yen units when shopping with Suica, but the minimum calculated unit in
rail travel is ten yen. (Multiple one yen units in the credit balance cannot be added
together for use.) Note that one yen units are rounded up to a ten yen unit when a refund
is being made (View Suica excluded).

Can I use up the one yen units of the credit balance ?

With Suica, the premise is that you will use Suica-designated automatic ticket
gates, so the limits to your travel range (see pages 27 and 28 for details) are thus

defined area. If for some unavoidable reason, you travel beyond the usable area
without the correct ticket, please tell the station staff at your destination, and pay
the fare adjustment in cash.

●Suica is for full use in each usable area (pages 27, 28). If you are going to make a trip
that involves traveling inside and outside a Suica area, be sure to purchase the
correct normal ticket in advance, and do not use your Suica card.

be able to pass through gate next time you use the card.
Reissuing, and Printing Records

●Please note that certain stations in the Suica usable areas (see pages 27,28) do not
handle record printouts or reissuing of cards due to damage.Also, note that
applications for reissuance and actual reissuance procedures are not handled in the
Kinki area (JR WEST “ICOCA” area.)

●When printing out records at a facility in the Tokyo, Sendai or Niigata areas that

area if detailed records including station names are required.

prescribed basic fare from the boarding station to the alighting station will be

●If, for some reason, you use a Suica card improperly, the Suica card, the credit

●Suica iO card function cannot be used for onboard fare adjustments.

("Midori-no-madoguchi") or purchase commuter passes at Commuter Pass vending
