私は 2013 年の夏にグローニンゲン大学短期訪問研修に参加しま
した。しかし、研修の期間はわずか 3 週間だったので、限られた期
間の中で何を得られたのかを本稿で皆さんに伝えられたらな、と思
います。
グローニンゲン大学では英語でのプレゼンテーションの仕方を学
んだり、グループでディスカッションをしたりしました。当然です
が、授業は英語、プリントも板書も英語、発表も英語、外に出ても
英語、といった具合にうんざりするぐらい英語漬けでした。
さて、それによって英語の力が大きく上がったかと聞かれれば、
正直に言って No です。私の努力が足りなかったのかもしれません
が、たった 3 週間で劇的に英語が話せるようになるわけがありませ
ん。しかし、短期の留学が全くの無駄だと言い切ることは出来ませ
ん。確かに得たものもあったからです。印象的だったのは研修中に
会ったベトナム人留学生との会話です。相手には失礼かも知れませ
んが、英語とは思えない英語を話し、全然聞き取れませんでした。
最後に言われた‘Sorry, I cannot understand your English.’と
いう言葉は聞き取れました。つまり、相手にとっても私の話す英語
は、英語とは思えない英語だったのでしょう。そこで気付かされた
のは、英語は世界的な言語ですが、それを実際に使うのはネイティ
ブでない人の方が圧倒的に多いということです。そして、お互いに
英語の語彙が少ないときに、自分の考えを伝えようとするなら、英
語以前に自分の考えをしっかりまとめる必要性を痛感しました。こ
のように、自分の力が足りないと思う場面や文化の違いなど、長期
の留学をする際には課題となるものを幾つか垣間見ることが出来ま
した。これは外国人向けに用意された空間を巡る旅行では得難く、
短い期間でもそこで暮らす人々と肩を並べて生活を送ることで得ら
れる気付きだと思います。
確かに短い期間の留学では英語の力を上げるのは難しいかもしれ
ません。しかし、その土地の雰囲気ぐらいはわかるかもしれません。
そしてそれは長期留学への足場になるものであると思いますし、世
界の広さを知る機会になると思います。
I visited Groningen University on an exchange in the summer
of 2013. Because the program was over within three weeks, I
want to tell you what I gained from the experience in a very
limited time.
At Groningen University, I studied ways to make a presentation and discuss topics in a group in English. I had to use English everywhere because everything during my stay had to be
dealth with in English. I had many chances to speak English in
Groningen.
My stay in Groningen didn’
t help me dramatically improve
my English skills just because the time was so limited. But that
doesn’
t mean studying abroad for a short period of time is a
waste, because I certainly learned many things.
One episode in Groningen has stayed with me. One day in
Groningen, I met a Vietnamese student and talked with him.
His English was terrible, but I understood when he said“Sorry,
I cannot understand your English.”It meant my English was
terrible too. This episode made me realise that most English
speakers are not native English speakers. So, when both people
are not good at speaking English, I think the most important
thing is that we shape our ideas carefully in order to express
our opinions correctly. I caught a glimpse of the issues that
might come up for people who live in a foreign country longterm during my short stay. To even begin to solve these problems it would be necessary to study abroad longer. I am sure
that I was only able to discover this because I lived amongst
Groningen students, instead of just visiting as a tourist.
In a short time, it may be difficult to improve your English
skills. However, you will be able to learn what life is like in a
foreign country. A short stay can be the springboard to studying abroad another time, and helps to truly learn how big the
world is.

2013 年 9 月から 2014 年 6 月の間、わたしはイギリスのノッティ
ンガム大学に交換留学生として行くことが出来ました。日本で生ま
れ育ってきたわたしにとって、留学は長年の夢であり大きな期待を
胸にイギリスへ出発しました。
ノッティンガム大学は日本人学生が少なく、特に社会学部は留学
生が少ないので、授業のディスカッションなどで自分の常識と、周
りの常識が違っている事を多く感じました。その結果、様々な人の
気持ちを想像する力や相手に伝える能力が身に付いたと思います。
文化が違う人々の中でも友達を多く作り、自分の成長の糧にできた
のは、これからも大きな自信になって行くと思います。また、イギ
リス文化を学ぶと同時に新しい視点で日本の事を見つめ直すことが
出来る様になり、自分の日本人としてのアイデンティティについて
考える機会を得られました。
勿論、交換留学は勉強だけではありません。そこでしか得ること
のできない様々なチャンスを活かし、自分の長所や短所を知り、自
分自身を成長させていく機会でもありました。ノッティンガム大学
では‘Getting involved’というスローガンのもと、学生自治会公
認のイベントやクラブを通して、積極的に学生生活を充実させる活
動を行っていました。200 以上の魅力的なクラブの中から選ぶのは
大変でしたが、最終的にベリーダンスクラブに入りました。ベリー
ダンスクラブでは学生がお互いを教えあい、初心者のわたしでもす
ぐに打ち解け、上達することが出来ました。学校内や町のイベン
ト会場等での発表を通し、他の学生と仲良くなれたのは勿論、地域
社会とのつながりを深く感じました。阪大のモットーの「Live locally, grow globally」とあるように、自ら積極的に地域の文化に
とけ込む事により、自分の視野が広がり、将来どこに行ってもやっ
ていける自信がつきました。
イギリスでの一年は言うまでもなく、人生の宝物であり、自分の
成長にも大いに役立ったと思います。留学先で知り合えた友達は離
れ離れになっているものの、今も連絡を取り続けており、将来また
会える機会を楽しみにしています。最後に、交換留学を支えてくれ
た家族、先生、友達、大学関係の方々に感謝の気持ちでいっぱいです。
From September 2013 to June 2014, I studied Sociology at
the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom. Having
lived in Japan all my life, studying abroad was my long-cherished dream. I flew to England with great anticipation.
Since there were not many international students in the Sociology department, I often felt I had a fresh perspective compared to the local students in class discussions. As a result, I
got to develop the ability to think from others’perspectives
and communicate my ideas clearly to ones who have different
ways of thinking. Being able to express myself in a different cultural setting has given me confidence and skills I can use anywhere I go in the future. Equally important, studying in the UK
not only allowed me to learn about the British culture but also
an opportunity to view Japan from a new perspective. It also
allowed me to think about my identity as a Japanese person.
Of course, studying abroad is not just about academic learning. By making the most of the opportunities made available at
the university, I was able to learn about my strengths and weaknesses, and grow as a person. At the University of Nottingham,
the student union encourages students to actively take part in
various events and societies at school under the slogan‘Getting involved’
. From more than 200 societies to choose from,
I decided to join the Belly Dance Society because I wanted to
try something new. I still remember going to the first practice
session feeling nervous about not knowing anyone. But soon
I realized most of the people at practice were also beginners
just like me. Weekly lessons took place in a very friendly atmosphere so I was able to make many friends. I took part in various performances and I really enjoyed performing in front of
an audience. Taking part in events made me feel I was contributing back to the university as well as the local community.
Here I would like to refer to Osaka University’
s motto,‘Live locally, grow globally’
. By getting involved in a local community,
I was able expand my network and gain confidence that I could
adapt anywhere I go.
My experience at Nottingham is one I will treasure all my life.
Although the friends I made there are now spread all over the
world, I still keep in touch with many of them and am looking
forward to seeing them again in the future. Lastly, I would like
to thank my family, friends, professors, and the university staff
who supported me throughout my time abroad.

In the courses I attended, I was able to meet and interact
with many American students who came from different demographic backgrounds. Not only did I learn from them, I also
shared my experiences and knowledge as an Osaka University
student. I also had a wonderful experience living in a dorm
for international students called the I-house, a multicultural
residence with around 600 students and scholars from 70+
countries. Here, I felt as if all the nationalities of the world were
gathered in one place to foster peace by building lifelong relationships. The people living at I-house were also helpful to me
emotionally. Because most of the residents were exchange students themselves, they could understand my situation when I experienced homesickness or had any
difficulty adapting to my new life at UC Berkeley.
Studying abroad not only gave me the opportunity to further my academics and build relationships, but also to travel around. I took advantage of
the holidays I had and traveled to New York, Boston
and even went on a road trip along the West Coast
during my spring break. I believe experiencing new
things outside of school is of equal importance to
studying hard.

私が所属する研究室では、高齢者心理学や死生学をベースに様々
な研究に取り組んでいます。今年度は、5 月に当研究室の権藤恭之
先生が主催となり、国際百寿者研究会を開催しました。国際百寿者
研究会(以下、ICC)とは、
「百寿者」と呼ばれる、百歳以上の方々
を対象にした研究を行う研究者が集まり、研究発表や意見交換を行
うことを目的とした研究会です。第 20 回目となる今年は、日本をは
じめ、アメリカ、フランス、香港、ドイツ、ポルトガルから約 20 名
をお迎えし、私は運営委員として参加しました。今回は、ICC2014
の紹介と自分自身の反省点を述べたいと思います。
今年のプログラムは、主に研究発表と視察の 2 つでした。まず、
研究発表は、心理学・社会学・人口学・生理学・医学・歯学・栄養
学など多岐に渡り、各国の百寿者研究の進捗状況や新たな研究の切
り口を知ることができました。また、先生方だけでなく、院生の私
にも発表機会があり、英語で口頭発表を行い、アドバイスをいただ
くという貴重な経験もしました。次に、観光では、日頃調査を実施
している兵庫県北部の但馬地域に出向き、出石地区の昔ながらの町
並みを体感し、緑豊かな但馬地域でお元気に過ごされている高齢者
の暮らし向きや地域の取り組みを知るという現地視察を企画しまし
た。その他には、研究者・院生だけでなく学部生でも気兼ねなく参
加できるようにと研究室の学部生と公開立食パーティーを発案し、
たこ焼きや流しそうめん等、日本ならでは、学生ならではの食事で
ささやかなおもてなしをしました。決して豪華なパーティーではな
かったと思いますが、お褒めのお言葉をいただき、とても嬉しかっ
たです。
2 月から準備を重ね、苦労したことも多々ありましたが、常に楽
しみながら全力で取り組め、充実した、あっという間の 3 か月でし
た。私自身の課題として、英語力の自信のなさから発言をあきらめ、
黙ってしまうことがあり、ある先生が「Marina は日本人の中でも
特にシャイだね、考えていることは間違っていないからもっと堂々
と発言したらいいよ。」とおっしゃったくらいでした。今は、来年の
ICC(イタリア)で、今回の苦い経験を活かせるよう、リベンジに
燃えています。
最後に、ICC を通して、多くの方々にサポートいただきました。
この場をお借りして厚くお礼申し上げます。
The laboratory to which I belong focuses on Aging Psychology and Clinical Thanatology. Dr. Gondo, who is my supervisor,
organized an international conference called the International
Centenarian Consortium (ICC) in May 2014. We aimed to discuss centenarians, in other words people who are over 100
years old, with researchers. Twenty researchers from the United
States, France, Hong Kong, Germany and Portugal participated
in this conference and I also attended as a committee member.
I would like to describe ICC 2014 and my impressions of it.
The conference consisted of workshops and site visits. Firstly,
the workshops covered various areas of research including
psychology, sociology, demography, physiology, medical science, dentistry, and nutrition. Furthermore, I had the precious
experience of giving a presentation about my research and getting detailed advice from well-known researchers. Secondly we
went to the Tajima area in northern Hyogo prefecture which
we had often been to for surveys. We also went to the Izushi
area to get a feel for a historical townscape and understand the
lifestyle in a rural area. The local government held an event to
support the community's efforts to recover from disease and
live longer. We also held a buffet party for undergraduate students to speak freely with international visitors. We prepared
takoyaki and nagashi so-men for the party and made a few
other things. The party wasn’
t luxurious, but we received high
praise from the researchers.
The three months I spent working on the ICC were absolutely fabulous. It was a hard task to manage the conference as a
committee member, but thinking back on it all now, it is all a
part of the precious memory of being a part of the ICC 2014.
My disadvantage as a committee member at ICC 2014 was my
poor English. For example, when I wanted to communicate
with foreign researchers, I sometimes gave up talking with
them and felt silenced with shame. One researcher said to me
“Marina, you are very shy. Don’
t be shy! ”I would like to make
efforts to overcome my limitations in English before the ICC is
held in Italy in 2015.
I am deeply grateful to everyone who

生訪韓研修に参加しました。講義や韓国文化体験、視察、ホームス
テイなど盛りだくさんの 9 泊 10 日間でした。
出発前は、日本人の団員と仲良くなれるかな、ホストファミリー
の方と話ができるかなと、とても不安でしたが、いざ韓国へ行くと
そんな心配をしている暇も無いくらい、充実した日々でした。実際
に現地の人と同じ場所を歩き、同じ電車に乗り、同じ店で飲食をし
て、韓国文化に直に触れることができました。
現地での交流のなかで学んだことは、一番大事な対話を、意味が
通じないことを、拙い韓国語を笑われることを恐れないことです。
もちろん研修中は韓国語に触れている時間が多いので、特にリスニ
ング力が向上したと実感することができました。
しかし、本研修で後悔があるとすれば、それは私の言語力の無さ
です。ホストファミリーやお世話になった方々に、多くの感謝を伝
えたくても私の語彙力では全ての気持ちを伝えることができません
でした。この悔しさは、今後も韓国語の勉強を続けていくモチベー
ションに繋がっています。再び韓国を訪れた際には、満足のいくコ
ミュニケーションをとるためにも韓国語のスキルアップを目指した
いです。
韓国外国語大学日本語学科学生との交流で、彼らは日本のことに
強く関心を示してくれました。そして領土問題のことなど日本と韓
国の問題にも率直な意見を聞かせてもらいました。仲良くなった大
学生とは韓国での再会を約束し、今でも頻繁に連絡を取り続けてい
ます。このような人との出会いは、本研修で得たかけがえのない宝
物の一つです。
訪韓研修は非常に有意義で、実りのあるものでした。わずか 10
日間でしたが、語学力はもちろんのこと、文化の違いや考え方の違
いに触れ、日本にいては分からないことを沢山学ぶことができまし
た。もし訪韓研修に行ってみたいと少しでも思っている方がいるの
なら、迷わず参加することを勧めます。
最後になりましたが、このような素晴らしい機会を与えてくだ
さった関係者の皆様に深く感謝申し上げます。ありがとうございま
した!
From September 10th to 19th,I participated in the Korea-Japan
Youth Exchange Program under the supervision of the Ministry
of Foreign Affairs of Korea and that of Japan. I had many valuable experiences, such as a homestay for ten days.
Before my departure, I was so worried that I wouldn’
t be
able to get along with other members of the program or communicate with my host family. However, once I was in Korea, I
had such a good and busy time there that I forgot that concern.
I actually walked through the streets, got on the train, and ate
and drank in restaurants as Korean people did. I felt as though I
could experience Korean culture directly.
I realized that nothing would be gained by just waiting for
fear of being embarrassed. There was so much time to listen to
Korean being spoken during the program that I could improve
my Korean ability, especially my listening ability.
However, I regret that I didn’
t have the best ability to speak
in Korean. I wanted to fully convey my gratitude to people who
took care of me but I couldn’
t do it due to my lack of fluency.
This chagrin motivated me to continue studying hard. I want
to make progress in my Korean and be able to communicate
satisfactorily by the next time I visit Korea.
I had an opportunity to spend time with students in Hankuk
University of Foreign Studies. They had a great interest in Japan
and let me hear their opinions. I exchanged views frankly with
them on matters including territorial disputes between Japan
and Korea. I promised the students I got along well with that I
would come back and meet them again. I keep in touch with
them. New encounters like this are very valuable to me.
This exchange program was very meaningful to me. I will
never forget it. I could find out the difference in views and culture between Korea and Japan. I wouldn’
t have been able to
do that if I hadn’
t actually visited Korea. I certainly recommend
that anyone take part in an exchange program if they feel like
doing one.
Last but not least, I would like to thank all persons concerned
for providing me with such a great opportunity to improve myself.

す。1 年生の最初、秋学期が始まる前に、人間科学にあったサーク
ルのメンバーに箕面滝への日帰りハイキングに招待されました。そ
の時は、そのサークルのメンバーを誰一人として知らなかったので、
行くかどうか少し迷いました。でも、みんなと気楽に話せたので、
箕面滝から帰ってから参加してよかったと思いました。私が参加
したそのサークルは、人間科学部の国際交流サークル「Fun from
Jinka!」でした。それからいつの間にか、3 年半ぐらい経ちました。
これまで Fun from Jinka! を通じてたくさんの楽しい経験をするこ
とができました。現在は 12 人の中心メンバーがいて様々な活動をし
ています。
Fun from Jinka! が今、定期的に行っているのは国際交流室も支
援している毎週開催しているランチ会です。月曜日にみんな昼ご飯
を持ってきて、しゃべりながらお菓子を食べます。ランチ会に加え
て、他にも活動をしています。例えば、今年の春学期に人間科学部
のインターナショナルカフェでポットラックパーティーを開きまし
た。ポットラックパーティーというのは、みんな自分で作った料理
を持ち込むパーティです。その他、今年の秋には、に京都へ遠足
に行って、京都市市民防災センターで体験シミュレーション体験
をした後、紅葉の散策を楽しみました。以上の活動は、Fun from
Jinka! で行っている活動のほんの一部で、常に新しい活動を考えて
います!
Fun from Jinka! は人間科学部で留学生や国際交流に興味を持っ
ている日本人と友達になる場です。Fun from Jinka! はとても気軽
で自由なサークルで、参加資格や活動義務など一切ありません。メ
ンバーが行うすべての行事は参加自由です。このサークルは、例え
ば、課外活動に参加したいが、多くのサークルが求める義務的な努
力をしたくない、と考えている人にお勧めです。メンバーはいつも
初めての参加者を和やかに迎えます。活動では、ほとんど日本語の
み使っていますが、多くのメンバーは英語を話せますから、英語の
練習にもなれるかもしれません。もし、興味があれば、ぜひ Fun
from Jinka! の活動に参加してみてください!
My name is Sean Zilka. I’
m a 4th year international student in
the Osaka University School of Human Sciences. Before my first
semester started, I was invited to go on a day trip to the Mino
Waterfall by a student circle in my department. At first I was
hesitant to go because I did not know anyone in the circle, but
everyone was very easy to talk to and I was glad I went. That
circle was the Department of Human Science’
s international
exchange circle, fun from Jinka! I have now been a member of
that circle for about three and a half years and have gotten to
do lots of fun things through joining the circle. We have about
12 core members and do a myriad of activities.
Our main activity is our weekly lunch gatherings supported
by the Office of International Exchange. Every Monday we
bring our lunches and gather to chat while eating snacks. In addition to our lunches, we also do many other kinds of activities.
We have had potluck dinners in the department’

Café, where everyone brought some homemade foods. We
also go on excursions outside of the university. In November,
we had a Kyoto excursion where we participated in a disaster
simulation, and afterward enjoyed Kyoto’
s fall colors. These
are just a few of the activities we do in our circle. We are always
thinking new activities to try out!
Fun from Jinka! is a great way to make friends with Japanese
students and international students in the department. Unlike
many other circles at Osaka University, Fun from Jinka! is a very
laid back circle with no mandatory participation for members.
You can participate or not participate in any event and still be a
member. It is a very good circle for those who would like to participate in some sort of extracurricular activity, but are not able
to put in the effort that many Japanese circles require. All of our
members are very amiable toward new people who come to
our activities. While we mostly speak in Japanese at our lunches and other activities, most of our members speak English as
well, so don’
t be afraid to stop by if you can’
t speak Japanese!

Visiting the Mongolian educational institutions as a representative of Osaka University was very interesting since I was able to
see them as if through the eyes of a foreign visitor. It was also

and Cooperation Department of National University of Mongolia (NUM) and Mongolian University of Science and Technology
(MUST). The second and third days there, the venue where
the Study Fair was held was crowded with 1,300 visitors over
two days, and officials noted that there were more visitors than
in previous years. Visitors of all ages attended, including high
school pupils, parents, students and working people who want
to continue to study. We explained about the programs and answered questions. I soon came to realize that Mongolians are
already familiar with Osaka University. Visitors were interested

“The 21st International
Conference on Computational
Statistics (COMPSTAT2014)”

私は、8 月 19 日から 22 日にかけて,スイスのジュネーヴで開催
された The 21st International Conference on Computational
Statistics (COMPSTAT2014) に参加し、学会発表を行いました。
COMPSTAT は、データ分析や統計学における数学的、計算機的な
発展について発表や討論を行うことを目的としており、毎回,世界
中から多くの研究者が参加しています。
この学会は私にとって 2 回目の国際学会で、ヨーロッパでの国
際学会は初めてでした。初めての国際学会は台湾で開催された ims
aprm 2014 と呼ばれる学会でした。その時は、参加者の大多数が
アジア圏の人々だったので、比較的リラックスして発表することが
できました。しかし、今回の学会は、まさに世界中から様々な国の
研究者が集まっていたので、ims aprm と比べるととても緊張しま
した。
今回のCOMPSTAT では、
“Reduced K-means with sparse loadings”というタイトルで口頭発表を行いました。大会初日のオープニ
ングセレモニーの直後のセッションということもあり、多くの研究者
の前で発表をする機会に恵まれました。私の研究内容は、近年のHot
topic の1つである“Sparse Modeling”と関連しており、私の他にも,
多くの研究者が”Sparse Modeling”に関連した研究発表を行ってい
ました。そのため、発表の後も何名かの海外の若手研究者とディスカッ
ションを行い、貴重な意見や最先端の研究について知ることができま
した。また,海外の研究者だけでなく、日本人の研究者とも交流を深
めることができました。
8 月のスイスは非常に過ごしやすい気候で、多くの観光客や登山
客で賑わっていました。街では、道端でドラムを演奏する人や芝生
に寝転んで談笑する人もいて、日本とは違う文化を感じることがで
きました。
思い返すと、修士 1 年の頃は、COMPSTAT のような大規模な国
際学会に自分が参加できるとは思ってもいませんでした。研究生活
は決して楽しいことばかりではありませんが、多くの人と自分の研
究やアイデアを共有できることの喜びを今回感じることができまし
た。この COMPSTAT での感動を、これからの研究や仕事のモチベー
ションにして、頑張って行きたいと思います。
I participated in and gave an academic presentation at the
21st International Conference on Computational Statistics
(COMPSTAT2014) held in Geneva, Switzerland from the 19th
to the 22nd of August. The aim of COMPSTAT is to give presentations and have debates about mathematical and computational developments in data analysis and statistics, and many
researchers from all over the world participate.
This was my second time attending an international academic conference, and my first time to participate in one in Europe.
My first international conference was“IMS-APRM 2014”, which
was held in Taiwan. I was very relaxed when presenting at this
conference because most of the participants were from nearby
Asian countries. At COMPSTAT2014, however, participants had
gathered from various countries all over the world, so I was
very nervous to give my presentation compared to my experience at“IMS-APRM”.
My presentation at COMPSTAT2014 was titled“Reduced Kmeans with sparse loadings”. I presented right after the opening ceremony on the first day, so I was lucky enough to present
in front of a large audience. The subject of my research is related to“Sparse Modeling”, which is a hot topic in recent years.
Many researchers also presented on topics relating to“Sparse
Modeling”, and I was introduced to many new, interesting
ideas and opinions relating to the topic through discussions
with other researchers. This was a valuable experience for me,
especially since I was able to communicate with researchers
not only from Japan, but from all over the world.
The weather in August in Switzerland was very mild and Geneva was crowded with tourists and hikers. There were people
playing the drums outdoors, or lying down on the grass to chat
with their friends. The atmosphere and the people were very
nice. It was different from Japan, and I felt the cultural difference.
Looking back to the first year of my Master s course, I never
imagined I would participate in a major international academic
conference like COMPSTAT.
Researching every day is not
without its struggles and hard
times, but being able to share
my ideas and research with
many other people at COMPSTAT was a very rewarding
experience. This unforgettable experience will continue
to motivate me in my future
research and career.

Making“Stops”on Your
Long Journey

博士論文を書き終えるまでの道のりは、長く険しいものである。
その道のりには多くの山あり、谷あり。高く立ちはだかる山を一人
で登っているようなものだと私はよく感じていた。山頂まで無事登
りきるには、山頂までの道のりで何度か休憩を取る必要がある。単
なる休憩と感じるかもしれない。だがこの休憩は頂上まで登りきる
ために、非常に重要な役割を担う。学会参加は、この山登りでの途
中「休憩」と同じようなものだと私は思う。この「休憩」をとり立
ち止まることは、自分の研究の進歩の度合いを確認し、違うアング
ルから自分の研究を見つめ直し、今後の研究の方向性を決めていく
貴重な時間である。特に国際学会の参加では、様々な背景を持つ研
究者と出会う機会があり、今までとは全く違う視点で研究を再探求
するきっかけになる。
私が参加した国際学会で特に印象的なのは、2014 年の 8 月に
インドネシア大学で行われた「Association of Asia-Pacific Rim
Universities Doctoral Student Conference」
(APRU) で あ る。
この学会が他の学会とは異なるのは、学会参加者がすべて博士後期
課程の学生で、アジア環太平洋地域における様々な国々や多様な研
究分野からの参加であることである。今まで高等教育の学会しか参
加したことのない私にとって、理系・文系の枠を越えアジア環太平
洋地域の学生が集まり、それぞれの研究発表を行い、議論する光景
を見るのは非常に目新しいものであった。この学会発表で、自分の
分野ではない方に自分の研究分野を分かりやすく発表・説明するこ
との難しさを痛感した。また今までとは全く異なる視点からの意見
や質問が飛び交い、発表の時間は非常に貴重な学びの時間になった。
特に、自分と同じ状況に置かれている多くの学生さんと意見を交わ
したこの一週間は実りの多きものであった。学会で出会った学生さ
んとは、学会参加後も引
き続き連絡を取り合い、
交流をしており、研究成
果や進歩を報告し合って
いる。

Doing research and writing a dissertation is a long journey.
A journey that brings you ups and downs, like climbing a big
mountain alone. To successfully reach the top the mountain, you
need to make some stops. Attending conferences are like making stops on your long journey to the top of the mountain. These
stops play a vital role in taking time to check your progress and
to re-examine your dissertation research from a different perspective, giving your research a boost. In particular, attending
international conferences can provide you with opportunities to
meet people from different backgrounds and perspectives and
to re-examine your dissertation research as a result.
One of the most interesting conferences I attended was the
“Association of Asia-Pacific Rim Universities Doctoral Student
Conference”(APRU), held at the University of Indonesia in August 2014. The annual conference attracts doctoral students
researching various disciplines in the Asia-Pacific Rim region.
Presenting my research and getting feedback from people outside my field enabled me to examine my dissertation research
from different angles. It was challenging, but rewarding for me
to explain the significance of my research to people who know
nothing about my field. I needed to have a full understanding
of my own research. During the question and feedback session,
I was also able to receive lots of questions and feedback, which
helped me see what my research lacked and how I could make
progress. Making that one-week stop at the APRU provided me
with
a
meaningful
experience and, even
after the conference,
it
fuelled
on-going
discussions about my
dissertation research
and future career.
By making a stop on
my long journey, I was
able to gain different
perspectives and find
people to climb that
challenging mountain
with me. If you are on
a similar long journey,
I strongly suggest you
make some meaningful stops too.

国立臺灣大学(NTU)社会科學院と部局間交流締結署名式
国立臺灣大学(NTU)社会科學院と本学人間科学研究科および
経済学研究科との部局間交流協定を締結する運びとなり、臺北の
NTU、新しいキャンパスに移転したばかりの社会科學院で署名式お
よび記念シンポジウムが 9 月 15 日に、東アジアセンターの協力のも
と開催された。本学からは、人間科学研究科・経済学研究科の中道
正之・大西匡光両研究科長、福重元嗣経済副研究科長、国際交流室
長(人科:ノース・スコット、法学:福井康太)、コンタクトパーソ
ン(CP)他が参加し、本シンポジウムには、本年 2 月に部局間交流
協定を締結した法学研究科から国際交流室長で CP である福井康太
教授も参加した。出席したすべての教員が自分の研究も紹介しなが
ら、部局の現状を報告しあった。また、経済学研究科からは事務研
修出張として、山元事務長はじめ 4 名も同行した。また、NTU から
は、社会科学院、法学院の院長はじめ関係者の他、呉俊輝 副国際事
務長も参加された。
東アジアセンター長を兼任している大谷が本年 5 月の臺灣出張時
に大学間交流協定を結んでいる NTU を訪問した際に、限られた定員
枠が理系に取られるので、別に部局間協定を結びたいと先方より申
し出があったことを受けて、準備を進めてきた。この協定により、
今後ますますの交流発展を祈念する。

The Dean of College of Social Sciences, National Taiwan University, Taiwan, and the Dean of the Graduate School/School of
Human Sciences, and the Dean of the Graduate School/School
of Economics, Osaka University, Japan, with the objective of
promoting cooperation in the fields of education and academic research, have concluded an agreement on academic
exchange. The agreement relates to the exchange of students,
and memorandum on student exchange was also signed at
the signing ceremony on 15 September 2014. The ceremony
took place at the new building of the College of Social Sciences, NTU, in Taipei, designed by the Japanese architect, Toyoo
Itoh, Dean Masayuki Nakamichi and Prof Scott North, presented
from School of Human Sciences. The signing ceremony was
followed by the commemorative symposium, in which the
School of Law also participated. After signing the agreement
earlier, in February 2014.
When I visited NTU in May as Regional Director of East Asia
Center for Academic Initiatives, NTU SS proposed the agreement. Since then, we have been working to realize it. We hope
our international exchange and collaboration will evolve in the
coming years and benefit our students and faculty members.

Taking the opportunity of the presence of faculty from
臺灣在住の同窓生との交流会(9 月 13 日)を実施した。日臺交流
協会(大使館相当)
、臺北駐大阪弁事処文教課(臺灣政府駐大阪総領
事館相当)やロータリー米山奨学金学友会、咲耶会本部事務局の協
力のもと広報等を行い、臺北だけでなく、臺中や高尾からの参加者
もおり、総勢 35 名となった。また参加者の 9 割が臺灣各地の大学教
員であった。人間科学研究科の卒業生らもいた。卒業生が帰国後活
躍している様子は喜ばしく、彼らは今後も活用していくべき大事な
人材ネットワークである。

きる(単位も取得できる)制度がある。一学年中 150 名(1,000 人中)
が一年次に日本語を学習。80% が臺灣の国立大学に進学。卒業生の
うち 20 人が海外大学に進学し、日本には 4-5 人進学している。早稲

本語専攻でも)の英語の会話能力の高さに驚いた。

Human Sciences grads, working in education upon graduation.
We also visited a top high school in Taiwan, The Affiliated Senior High School of National Taiwan Normal University, to exchange opinions and to promote the Human Sciences English
Language Degree Program.
Our visit was short but it was very impressive to see how our
neighbor in Asia is promoting the internationalization of higher
education. It was a great learning opportunity as well.

that something important is happening here in terms of creating a diverse and engaged student body studying wholly or

One of the biggest challenges we faced was how to make
contact with potential students. In the early days we visited
many secondary (high) schools in different countries and participated in college fairs where we met prospective students
and often their mums and dads as well! Some of the first prospective students we spoke with back then are now in their final year of the program. Just like watching a child grow from
being a toddler to a young adult, we have watched our G30
students mature and grow in confidence with the same kind of
delight and holding of breath.
Another way that we reach out to prospective students is
through Open Campus events. With mock classes, prospective
students can see first-hand the teaching and learning environment where they may eventually study. One question we are
always asked at college fairs or open campus events is what do
G30 students do after graduation. My answer to this question
has always been, we have not graduated any students yet from
this program so we are all waiting to find out. Well nearly four

海外の留学に挑戦してみたい!という方のために、大阪大学には交換留学の派遣制度があります。個人留学とは異なり、大阪大学
に在籍したまま、通常 3 ヶ月∼ 10 ヶ月の派遣期間で、海外の大学で勉強することが出来ます。単位の互換制度がありますので、海
外の大学で取得した単位を一定数、阪大での卒業単位に換算することも出来ますし、学費は先方の大学ではなく、大阪大学に納入す
る仕組みになっています。奨学金等もありますので、大学のバックアップを受けながら、海外での勉強や研究の機会を持てる大きな
