Hello everyone! It’s Nobeoka City Hall’s CIR,
Devin Recchio! Recently, I took some time off and
went on a little trip. I had a great time going from
Tokyo all the way down to Nara, stopping by all
sorts of places along the way and thinking how
nice Japan’s public transportation system is the
entire time, but when I got back home to Nobeoka, I remembered how nice it was to be in
such a calm, relaxing place, and was very happy
to be back. It’s nice to go out and have fun, but having
been brought up in the countryside in the United States,
I have no choice but to acknowledge that I just can’t get
used to gigantic cities. Nobeoka is big enough. That being
said, I had a great time having all sorts of experiences
that are only possible in Japan’s big cities, so I decided
that I want to write a bit about my trip.
When I go for trips in Japan, I usually visit shrines
and temples, enjoy the beautiful natural scenery and
local cuisine, and just generally have a slow paced, relaxing time. However, I’ve already visited such places many
times before, and a friend of mine and I were talking recently about going to see shops and cafés that you can
only see in modern day Japan, so this time I went to vampire and Final Fantasy themed cafés, as well as all sorts of
other places. I even went to an owl café, where you can
play with owls!
Anyway, this time I really got to rediscover modern
Japan’s fun side. To be sure, there are many things that
we can learn from traditional Japanese culture and history, but I felt like there’s really something special about
the living Japan that exists now too. I don’t know what to
call that special something, a playful spirit or what, but at
the very least, many of the places I visited were full of
just that, and I came to rediscover just how important a
playful spirit really is. It’s something that we humans just
can’t go without.
Tokyo seemed to have a particular abundance of
places like that. I don’t know if it’s just because there are
a lot of people gathered in one place, but there really
seemed to be that kind of a culture there. For example, I
am a big Final Fantasy fan, so I went to a store dedicated
to selling Final Fantasy products. There, I got a taste of an
atmosphere that you can only really see normally in the

皆さん、こんにちは！延岡市役所の国際交
流員のデヴィン・レッキオです！実は、この
間、休暇を取らせて頂いて、ちょっとした旅
に出てきました。東京から奈良まで色々な所
に寄り、日本の公共交通機関をうらやみなが
ら楽しい時間を過ごしたのですが、やはり
帰ってきた時に、延岡の落ち着いた安らぎの
ある雰囲気を再び実感して、帰ってきてよ
かったなと思いました。遊びに出るのはいいのです
が、アメリカの田舎から来た私はなかなか大都会に
馴染めないと認めざるを得ませんでした。延岡は十
分都会です。とは言いながら、その日本の大都会で
しか体験できない事をいっぱい楽しんできたので、
少し旅で経験した事について書きたいと思います。
いつも日本を旅行する時は、寺社や自然の風景や
行く先の料理などを楽しみながら、割とのんびりす
る私ですが、もうそういった場所には行った事があ
るので、今回、友達と話している時に、現代の日本
ならではのお店や喫茶店に行ってみようという話が
出ました。という訳で、今回は吸血鬼をテーマにし
たカフェやファイナルファンタジーをテーマにした
カフェ等、色々な所に行ってきました。フクロウと
触れ合えるカフェにも行きました！
とにかく、今回の旅行で改めて現代の日本の面白
さを実感しました。確かに日本の歴史や伝統的な文
化には学ぶべき事が沢山ありますが、今、生きてい
る現代の日本にも特別な何かがあると感じました。
それは遊び心というものか、何というものか分かり
ませんが、少なくとも私が訪れた所は遊び心に溢れ
ていました。そして、遊び心はやはり人間にとって
欠かせないものだと深く感じました。
東京はそういう所が特に多かったです。人が多く
集まっているからかどうか分かりませんが、そうい
う文化になっているという気がしました。例えば、
私はファイナルファンタジーのファンだから東京に
着いたらすぐにファイナルファンタジーのテーマ
グッズ専門店に行ってみました。そこでゲームの世
界でしか見られない雰囲気を味わって、人気なキャ

world of a video game, and was able to see all sorts of
accessories and rings that popular characters wear. I
went fully prepared to buy something, but it was all a bit
too expensive, and I ended up losing to my inner stingy
old man. It was fun enough just seeing the items that my
favorite characters wore fully realized at a quality so
close to the real thing, but later I thought that it was sort
of a shame that I didn’t get anything, so I set my heart on
buying something if I ever get another chance to go
again.

While there were places where you could get a taste
of the world of a video game, there were others that
seemed like they had come out of a piece of literature.
I’m sure almost everyone is familiar with Bram Stoker’s
Dracula. As I said before I went to a vampire themed café
as well. While vampire themed literature changed a lot
after the publication of Dracula, the café seemed as
though it was taken straight from a scene in the book.
With a dark and classy atmosphere that Dracula may
have been fond of, it was not so evocative of modern
vampires. I can’t be sure whether or not it was meant to
leave that impression, but it was interesting nonetheless.

went. For example, I had yet to have a
chance to see the Kabuki theater and I felt it
a waste not to at least stop by and see it, so I
took a moment to go check it out it in Ginza.
Though I didn’t have the time to see a performance, I would really like to go and see
one the next time I go.

でも楽しかったですが、せっかく行ったのに何だか

ば、その時こそ何か買おうと決心しました。
ゲームの世界のような雰囲気を味わえるところが

ていると思いますが、先ほど書いたようにその主役
である吸血鬼をテーマにしたカフェもありました。
吸血鬼の文学はドラキュラ出版後、大きな変化を遂
げましたが、その原型であるドラキュラが好んだ上
品かつ暗い雰囲気があったので、現代の映画に出て
くる吸血鬼ではなく、小説に出てくる吸血鬼を思わ
せるカフェでした。わざとそうなっているかどうか
は分かりませんが、とにかく面白かったです。
このような現代の日本ならではの所に行きました

い！」と思っていた歌舞伎座を見ないで帰
るのはもったいないと思い、銀座にある歌

name is Erin
Cushing. I am 21
years old and
come from Virginia, USA. My hobbies are playing piano,
writing, and singing. The first time I visited Japan
was two years ago; I’d gone to Tokyo to study
Japanese at an international language camp. It
was also the first time I’d traveled abroad, and
the experience was enlightening. I made many
friends in Japan, and fell in love with the language and culture. When I returned to America and
enrolled in the University of Mary Washington, I decided I would pursue a job with the JET Program after I
graduated, so I could have the chance to give Japanese
children the same inter-cultural experience I’d had.
Now I have been living in Nobeoka for a week; I think
it’s the most beautiful city I’ve ever been to, and I am
so grateful to be having this experience. I look forward
to making many friends in this city as well. Thank you!

と申します。アメリカのバージニア
州出身です。２１歳です。趣味はピ
アノと執筆と歌を歌う事です。初め
て日本に来たのは２年前で、東京で
各国語の国際キャンプに参加した時
でした。その時は初めて海外に行っ
た事もあり、とても啓発的な経験で
した。日本で沢山の友達を作り、日
本の文化と日本語に惚れてしまいま
した。アメリカに帰国してメアリー
ワーシントン大学に入学した時、卒業したら私が
経験した国際交流を体験する機会を日本の子供達
に与える為にジェットプログラムに参加すると決
心しました。延岡に住んで１週間ですが、今まで
行った事がある都市の中で、延岡は一番美しいと
思っています。このような経験を頂くなんて、感
謝の言葉もありません。延岡市で、また沢山の出
会いを楽しみにしています！ありがとうございま

Hello everyone! My name is Andrew Gibbs and I
am from Charlotte, North Carolina. My hobbies are
reading, playing the guitar, and photography. This is
my second time in Japan. I studied abroad for one
year at the Nagoya University of Foreign Studies,
where I took a lot of classes and even passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (N3 in Japan and
then N2 in America). My favorite part about Japan
other than the amazing food and the people is the
language, and one day I would like to work for the
American embassy or the military as an interpreter. I
haven't lived in Kyushu before, so I am really looking
forward to experiencing a new place. I am excited to
be able to work and live along with everyone here in
Nobeoka!

My name is Jon Moore and I am a new ALT this year
at Nobeoka Seiun High School. I am 22 years old and graduated from the University of Oregon this June with a degree in economics and business. I am from Colorado
Springs, Colorado, which is where the U.S. Olympic Training Center is located. It
is also home to Pikes
Peak, which is a mountain over 4000 m tall.
Colorado has some of
the best mountains in
America so I love snowboarding, but I know
Jon and Makaya.

ロラドスプリングズという、アメリカのオリンピッ
ク選手が訓練する場所であるオリンピックトレーニ
ングセンターがある所です。コロラドスプリングズ
はその他に、パイクスピークという、標高４０００
メートル高い山で有名です。コロラド州にはアメリ
カの中でも素晴らしいと言われている山が集結して
いるからスノーボードが大好きですが、延岡は雪が
降らないと分かっているので、その代わりにサー
フィンをしてみるのを楽しみにしています。
生まれてから１２歳になるまで、日本の東京都と
長野県に住んでいたので、日本の事が大好きです。
小学校を卒業してから家族はアメリカに帰る事にし
たのですが、日本のいい思い出がいっぱいあるの
で、日本の料理と文化と人に対する愛着が全く薄れ
ていません。
I love Japan because I spent the first 12 years of my
life here, living part of the time in Tokyo and the other in
Nagano. Although my family decided to move back to the
States after I finished elementary school, I have so many
fond memories of Japan and never lost my love for Japanese food, culture, and people.
長い間、日本に戻りたいと思っていましたから、
やっと来る事が出来て、とても嬉しいです！それに
つい６月１１日に結婚しましたから、妻に日本の生

is Katie Alonso and I'm

a 22 year-old American from Orlando, Florida,
and I graduated with dual bachelor's degrees in
Economics and International Relations with a
focus on East Asia from the University of South
Florida. Two years ago, I studied abroad at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka for one semester,
and I loved Japan so much that I knew I wanted
to move back. I love writing, cats, traveling,
eating, and hanging out with my friends and
family. I hope to improve my Japanese and learn kyudo or
some sort of martial art while I'm here. Thank you very

アメリカの神話コーナー
American Myths
America has a relatively short history. However, it is
also constantly absorbing and combining cultures and ways
of thinking from all over the world. Due to this, legends
that were born in other countries are constantly becoming
American legends. In addition, there are also legends that
were born in America itself. This is “American Myths,”
where I present a new American legend or myth each
month.
The story that I present in this newsletter is a folktale
from Germany. It is called:
アメリカは比較的歴史が短い国です。しかし、その

リカの神話になりつつあります。アメリカで生まれた
神話もあります。このコーナーはその数々の神話を毎
月一つずつ紹介する「アメリカの神話コーナー」で
す。
今回紹介する神話はドイツのおとぎ話です。
The Pied Piper of Hamelin
ハムリンのパイド・パイパー
Once upon a time, a small town in Germany
called Hamelin was assaulted by a swarm of rats.
The rats ate all of the food, awoke the sleeping babies, and caused havoc for the poor residents. The
townspeople had had enough of the rats, but try as
they might, they could not rid themselves of the
pests. Even cats were not enough to kill them off.
昔々、ドイツにあるハムリンという小さな町
は、ネズミの群れに襲われた。ネズミの群れは
食べ物を食い尽くし、眠っている赤ちゃんを起
こし、住民を困らせた。ハムリンの人々はネズ
ミに対して腹が立っていたが、どうしてもネズ
ミを追い出せなかった。猫を飼ってもネズミを
殺しきれなかった。
Then, one day, a bizarre man with sharply glowing eyes adorned in colorful grab came to town.
Calling himself the Pied Piper, he asked the mayor of
the town, “What will you give me if I free this town
from these rats?” The mayor had no choice but to
promise to him what was then a great sum: 50
pounds.
The Pied Piper, happy with the mayor’s offer,
began to play his flute. The rats heard the sharp
notes, crawled out from inside their holes and nests,
and followed him. He lured the rats out of town,
playing his flute all the while and after he got out of
town, he headed to the harbor. He did not stop
playing the flute for even a moment. When he arrived at the harbor, he led the rats into the ocean,
where he drowned each one down to the last.
Of course, the townspeople, now free from the
rats, were overjoyed. However, when the Pied Piper

吹き出した。甲高い音色を聞いたネズミはそれ
ぞれの巣から這い出て、パイドパイパーについ
て行った。パイドパイパーはそのまま笛を吹き
ながら、ネズミを誘き出し、町から出た。そし
て、何万匹のネズミに追われながら港に向かっ
た。港に着くと、パイドパイパ―は海にネズミ
を導き、一匹残らず溺死させた。
当然、ネズミから解放された町の人々は喜び
に喜んだ。しかし、パイドパイパ―が町長を訪

mayor, thinking that there was nothing to worry
about now that the rats were gone, said, “I can’t believe you took care of them so easily. It seemed just
too easy for you. If I give you this kind of money for
a job that caused you such little trouble, I’m afraid
what the townspeople might think. As such, I will

The Pied Piper was angry when he heard this,
for he felt he had been deceived. He
began playing his flute then and
there, but this time the flute had a
very different, rather unusual tone.
When the sound of the flute
reached the ears of a child, they
would leave the house, as if hypnotized, and dancing all the while, follow the Pied Piper. He played and
played, and when he had gathered all the children in
the town, he led them out and down the road. The
elders of the town stared powerlessly, unable to believe their ears or their eyes, as the Pied Piper
walked off into the distance with the children in
tow. The mayor ordered soldiers to go find the Pied
Piper and the children, but neither were ever found.
No one has heard or seen the Pied Piper ever since.
ねてお金をもらおうとした時、ネズミを片付け
てもらったし、他に心配する事はないと思って
いた町長は「そこまで簡単に片付けてくれると
はな。しかし、簡単すぎるようじゃったのう。
こんな大金を難しくもない仕事に当てると、住
民に悪い思いをさせるかもしれん。故に、２０
ポンドを差し上げる事にする。どうかな、受け
取ってくれる？」と言ってしまった。
話が違うと思ったパイドパイパ―は怒って、
また笛を吹き出した。今度の
音色は前とは違う、奇妙な響
きを帯びたものだった。笛の
音が子どもの耳に届くと、催
眠にかかったかのように、子
どもは家から出て、踊りなが
らパイドパイパ―に追い付い
た。パイドパイパ―は子ども
を全て集めると、子どもを連れて町から出て
行ってしまった。長老たちは無力のまま、目と
耳を疑いながら、パイドパイパ―が子どもを遥
か遠くに導くのを眺めた。町長は兵を出し、パ
イドパイパ―と子どもを連れて来いと命じた
が、兵士たちは子どももパイドパイパ―も見つ
ける事が出来なかった。それ以来、パイドパイ
パ―の事を見た人も聞いた人も誰もいない。
