Caxton 版 の Le Mo吋e Dar臨μ『 ( 1485) と , そ れ と ほぼ 同時代の W inchester MS. の間に
は, 著 し い相違のみ られ る Bk V を 除 いた 他の部分 に 乱 vocabullary, spemng, morphology,
syntax, style等の面で 色 々な差違が認め られ る。 本稿は, マ ロ リ ー文法記述のた め, 両者を
比較 し なが ら読んだ際,
あ る。
つ いで に取材 し て お いた両 者の異 同に関す る材料 を整理 し た も ので

と述べ て い る こ とか ら も分 る よ
う に, 彼は 自己の出版す る書物に改訂 を 加え る習慣 で あ った こ と が想像 さ れ る。 従 っ て , マ
ロ リ ーの作品の Caxton版 の中で , 何度 も く り返 さ れ る W inchester MS. と の相違は, 恐 ら く
Caxton 自身の改訂 に よ る も ので , 当時既に obsolete と な っ て いた 語彙や表現を , Caxtonが
modernizeし た り, 他の地方方言形 を ロ ン ド ン英語 に書 き換 えた り, そ の他 Caxton 自身の好
みに 合致す る よ う に改訂 を 加えた も ので あ ろ う。
勿 論す べ て の variant reading を Caxton の責 任 に 帰す こ と は 出来 な いよ 二つ の versionを
比較 す る と , Bk V の よ う な大規模な 改訂が Caxton 版 に は加え られて い る こ と や, Bk V以
外の個所で 七随所に意識的な言 き換 えがな さ れて い る こ と か ら , これ らが Caxtonに よ る も の
と推定 さ れ, それだ け W inchester MS. の方が マ ロ リーの原作に忠実で あ る と考え ら れ て い
る 。 し か し W inchester M S. も original な も の で は な い し , 又 Caxton が 印 刷 の 際 使 用 し た
MS.で あ る と い う よ う に,
Caxton版 と 直接的関係 に あ る ので はな く ,
両 version は 二 つ の
別のpredecessor か ら下 った 従兄弟の如 き関係にあ るか ら , そ の間に生 じ た , Caxton と は無

関係 な , 無意識的な 単な る scribal slips と 考え られ る異 同 も存在す るわ けで あ る。 特に 何度
も く り返 さ れ る ので はな く 孤立 し た 両 者 の相違 はそ う し た 種 類 の も ので あ ろ う。

って いる 。 そ し て これにす ぐ引続 き , そ 0 一例 と し て らぽ の複数形につ いて , 次 のよ う に説

Caxton が語 る eg即 s と eyye?1 の例が示す よ 引 こ,
当時 は生存競走 の勝者 と し て 今 日迄 生
き 残 った 語法や, 今 日で は歴史の過程にお いて 消え去 った 語法等が,
互 いに共存 し , 又抗争
し て いた 混乱期で あ っ た。 先 に触れた よ う に, 両 version の異 同に は Caxton に よ る と 考え ら
れ る も のや, Caxton に無関係な 色 々な要素が含 まれ る が, そ れ ら を 整理 し て み る こ と に よ っ
て , Caxton の語 法上の好みや,
15世紀後半の 英語の混乱 し た状態 を具体的に 把握す る手掛
りの一 つ と な ろ う。 以下 は こ の よ う な 目的で Bk l か ら Bk VⅢ迄 の両 version の異 同を 整 理
し た も ので あ る。 但 し Bk V は 両 者 が parrallel し て いな いか ら ,
別 に改 め て 考察 す る必要
があ り, こ こで は除外す る。

The s`less genitive・
(1)
Sibilantで 終 る名詞 の場合, 又 は次の語が sibilantで 始 ま る場合に , sibilant の連続 を 避
け る た めの assimilation の結果, s-ending は し ば し ば省略 さ れ る。 こ のた め属格語尾 -sを と
る場 合 と の間に次の よ う な 異 同が生 じ る (cf. W yld, pp. 316- 318) 。

か し それ が確立す る迄 の歴 史的 段階に おいて は,
