はじめに
「ヨーロッパのあらゆる国が製造業の育成を企て,商業上の優位を獲得しようと懸
命になっている現在,わが国の心ある人々は,競争心を喚起し,創意工夫や勤勉を奨
励し,それらに報いることを求めているにちがいない・・・それゆえ,勤勉に拍車
をかけ,農業を振興し,製造業を拡張・改善し,商取引を拡大するためには,懸賞も
しくは助成を与えるのが一番よい方法である」 (1758年『会則』). 1754年3月下
旬に11名が集まって設立したSOcietyofArts (正式名称「工芸・製造業・商業を
奨励するための協会」 the Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufactures
andCommerce)は,以上のような認識のもと,ロンドンで懸賞活動をはじめ, 10
年後の最盛期には約2700名の会員を擁するまでになった.この団体については,す
でに拙稿で指摘しておいたように2),活動の全貌を解明することが,近代イギリス科
学の社会史における「空白期」である18世紀の研究や,イギリスの社会史研究にとっ
て重要な意義をもつと考えられる.設立までの様子については論じたことがあるの
で3),本稿では,設立からほぼ4年間を対象として,この団体で積極的に活動を行なっ
た会員がいったいどのような人々であったかを明らかにしたい.つまり,本稿の主た
る目的は,活動的会員のプロソポグラフイに関わる基礎データを提示することにある.
ここでプロソポグラフイ(prosopography)とは,たとえばある団体の活動を歴
史研究の対象とする場合,その活動の社会的基盤を考察するために,構成メンバーの
生涯やメンバー相互の人間関係をいわばシラミ潰しに明らかにしようとする研究手法
のことである4).この手法の一般的な意義について詳論する余裕はないが,特に近年

開拓されっっある「科学の社会史」では不可欠な手法となっている. Society of
Arts設立期の活動を扱ったこれまでの研究のなかには,たとえばAllanの研究のよ
うに6),一部にこの手法の参考になる研究はあるが,全体として見ればまだきわめて
不十分である.そのため,この団体の性格を全体としてどのように理解するかという
根本的な問題が未解決のまま残されている.本稿での作業は,こうした状況の改善を
意図するものである.なお,活動自体については,別に原稿を準備しているため,本
稿では扱わない.
最初に,誤解を生じないように本稿の内容に関わる幾つかの点について述べておき
たい.第-は,対象を会員すべてではなく,活動的な会員に限定したことについてで
ある.この限定は,本稿の扱う時期に限っても会員の総数が500名を越えるため,敬
が多すぎて全員を対象とすることが事実上困難だ,という消極的な理由によるもので
はない.もっと積極的な見通しに立っての選択である.つまり,当面の措置として名
目上の会員を埼外とすることで,活動を実際に推進してきた人々を浮き彫りにするこ
とをめざしているのである.
活動的な会員の推定については,次の二つを基準とした.第-は,この団体の役職
者である.これらの人々の活動ぶりはさまざまだが,対外的にはこの団体の代表者と
して,その存在は重要な意味をもったと考えられる.第二に,これ以外の一般会員に
ついては,会議への出席回数を基準とした.この第二の基準については,余りにも機
械的すぎるとの批判がありうるであろう.その問題点は筆者も十分に承知しているが,
この団体の活動が懸賞項目の決定と応募品の審査にあったことを考えると,特に考慮
しなければならない事情でもない限り7),会議に出席することが活動の最低の条件と
みなせるのである.もちろん,会議に出席したといっても,積極的に見解を述べた人
もいれば,ただ出席しただけの人もいたであろう.しかし,たとえば個々の懸賞のす
べてについて,誰がどのような意見を述べたかまでは,本稿の基礎史料であるこの団
体の議事録(手稿)8)には記載されていないので,出席回数を基準とすることは止む
を得ない措置といえる.
最後に,対象とする時期についてである.本稿では, 1754年3月末から1757年末
までを扱うが,わずか4年間という期間はいかにも短いと考えられよう.時期に関す
るこの限定は,史料上の制約によるものである.いま述べたように本稿では出席回数
を基準として活動的な会員を推定したが, 57年12月中旬以降,出席者数が多くなり
過ぎたことを理由に,議事録では出席者の氏名が記載されなくなった.これ以降の時
期については,活動が「農業委員会」, 「化学委員会」など8部門の委員会を軸に行な
われるようになり,またそれぞれの委員会については出席者名も委員会議事録に記載
されているので,それぞれについて活動的な会員を推定することは可能だが,部門別

委員会の活動については60年代の活動と関わるので別に論ずる必要がある.このた
め,本稿では対象とする時期の終点を,議事録に出席者名が記載されなくなる, 57
年12月14日までとした.なお,始点は、第1回目の会議が開かれた54年3月22日
である｡ただし,この間の55年9月4日から56年1月20日までの5カ月間につい
ては,議事録のインクがうすく判読できないため,省かざるを得なかった.継続性の
点で問題が残るが,この間に重要な会員がやめたという兆候は見られないことは指摘
しておかねばならない.なお,本稿が検討した会議の総数は111回で,この間の会議
に一度でも出席したことのある人は延べにして200名を越えていた.本稿では,紙幅
との関係もあり, 9回以上出席した人に限った.この限定にはある種の任意性が伴わ
ざるをえないが,以下の記述から容易に看取できるように,この回数までの人物のな
かには活動的会員と考えて良い人が含まれていたことは確かである.
1.扱う事項と参照文献
A)扱う事項
それぞれの会員について扱う事項は次の通りである｡

1)入会の年月日(date of admission),推薦者の氏名(nameofrecommender),
<出席回数(number of attendance of meetings, from 22 Mar. 1754 to
3Sept. 1755 and from 21 Jan. 1756 to 14Dec. 1757)>.

これらの事項の意義や記述の仕方などについて若干の説明を加えておきたい. 1)の
なかで特に述べておかねばならないのは,推薦者についてである.この事項は,この
団体の会員資格に関わってくる. 1750年代を通じて,この団体の会員になるために

は二つの要件を満たす必要があった.第-はすでに会員となっている者の推薦,第二
は毎回の会議の選挙で承認されること,である.第二の要件を満たさないため,会員
になれなかった者もごく少数いたが,それはむしろ例外的で,圧倒的な多数の会員は
事実上,第一の要件さえ整えば会員になることができた.この第-の要件は,ある会
員が新しい会員として誰を推薦したかに関わるので,会員どうしの相互関係を探るた
めの手がかりとなるものである9).これに基づく会員相互の関係は,以下の3.で図に
して示す.
2)の活動内容では,この時期の活動の中心であった懸賞活動に注目し,個々q)懸賞
項目の提案,それを検討するための特別委員会への出席の様子,応募品の審査への関
わり方,あるいはこの団体からのメダル・懸賞金・助成金の収受を対象として,現在
までに判明しているものに限って記載した.これらにより,その会員がどのようなこ
とに関心をもっていたかが明らかとなる.今後,この情報と会員の経歴を併せて考察
することにより,懸賞活動の社会的基盤,たとえば個々の懸賞が会員の社会的利害と
どうかかわっていたか,などを明らかにできよう.また,この項目に何らかの記載が
ある人物は,本稿で取り上げた会員のなかでも,さらに活動的な会員とみなせる.
3)の各事項については,特に説明を要しまい.
4)は,その会員自身の出版物や手稿史料である.紙幅の関係で,人名事典などで容
易に調べ得るものについては記載を省略したり割愛したものがある点に注意されたい.
なお,記載したものうちの幾つかは,筆者自身のロンドンでの調査に基づくものであ
る.
5)は,その会員についての参照文献や研究文献である.
B)参照文献
それぞれの人物の経歴などについては,以下の文献を参照した.典拠を示す必要か
ら略号を用いたので,それらも併せて示しておく.幾つかの文献についてはその活用
に対して若干のコメントを加えておいた.

ここでは,以上の2., 3.から読み取れる特徴的な点をまとめながら,併せて今後
の検討課題を示しておく. 2.からわかるように, SOcietyofArtsの活動は,実に多
彩な経歴の人々によって担われていた.この集団の社会的構成については以下ですぐ
に検討するが,貴族やジェントリのはか,庶民院議員,政府関係者,芸術家,聖職者,
内科医から出版業者など,さまざまな人がこの団体の活動に参加していた.このこと
がこの集団の第-の特色といえる.しかし同時に,この多様性はある限定された社会
層のうちでみられるものであった.本稿で取り上げた73名の社会的構成は,次のよ
うに整理できる.

以上の「その他」についてはそれぞれの人物をどこに分類したのか,疑問が生じる
場合があるかもしれない.そこで,問題となりそうなところに限って,具体的に示し
ておく. 「学者」の例はHenry Bakerである. 「商人兼製造業者」はwaxchandler
のJohn Goodchild, Nicloas Crisp , pewtererのBourchier Cleeveである.また,
「製造業者」については,比較的明確なThomas Mooreに加えて,オルガン製作者
であるWilliam Baileyや,時計製造業者のThomas Grignionを含めた. 「不明」
の4名のうち2名については,全く情報がないわけではなく,確認がまだ不十分であ
ることによる.
「その他」のうち,少なくとも聖職者から画家までは疑似ジェントルマンとみなせ
る. 「商人」については,海外貿易に従事しているか否か,また国内の場合でもその
規模が問題となるが,これまでの調査ではこれらに関する情報はなく,現時点では判
断できない. 「商人兼製造業者」と分類した人々についても同様である.こうした点
に問題を残すものの,真正ジェントルマンである貴族やジェントリ層に,画家までの
疑似ジェントルマンを加えれば,活動的会員の大多数が広い意味でのジェントルマン
であったことになる.つまり, SOcietyofArtsの活動を担ったのは,決して「中産
的な産業家」10)ではなく,ジェントルマンであった.それゆえ,当時の代表的なジェ
ントルマンの団体であるRoyal SocietyやRoyal Society of Antiquariesの会員が
少なからず見受けられるのも,けだし当然といえよう.ただし,少数ではあるが,製
造業者など疑似ジェントルマンよりも下に位置すると考えられた人々が参加していた
点は注目しておいてよい.このことは,たとえば, RoyalSocietyにはみられない点
だからである.
当時「政治的国民」とみなされていたジェントルマンによってSOcietyofArtsの

活動が行なわれていたとするならば,次に検討すべきは,活動的会員の政治世界との
関わりについてである.たとえば, SOcietyofArtsの活動は,ある特定の政治集団
の運動であったかどうか.この点については活動的会員のそれぞれについて情報がき
わめて少ないため,断定的なことはいえないが,少なくとも,ある特定の立場が排除
されていたとは考えられない.たとえば,会長であったVisct. Folkestone (Jacob
Bouverie)や, 1758年以降副会長の職についたEarl of Lichfield (George Henry
Lee)のようにトーリーであったことが知られている人物もいるが, Ralph Verney
のように,当時のホウィッグ政府の支持者もいたし,さらにThomas Hollisのよう
に急進派もいたからである.もっとも今日では,この時代の政治の枠組をかつてのよ
うにトーリーとホウィッグの対立で捉えたり,あるいはそもそもこれらを「政党」と
みなすことに大きな疑問がなげかけられいることに留意すべきだが.
ある特定の立場があらかじめ排除していなかったという点は,非回教徒の会員がい
たことからもわかる.たとえば, ThomasBrandはユニテリアンであった.この人
物が例外的な存在ではなかったことは, 1758年にランカシャの非国教徒貴族である
Hugh Lord Willoughby of Parhamがこの団体の副会長の一人に選ばれているこ
とからも明らかである.
しかし,いま述べたことは, SOcietyofArtsの活動が,当時の政治世界と無関係
であったことを意味しているわけでは決してない.むしろ逆で,大いに関係があった
というべきである.この点については,これまでの研究ではほとんど論じられていな

いが,たとえば,議会との関係を見てみよう.本稿の範囲内でも, Society of Arts
には貴族院議員5名に加え,庶民院議員が4名いた.この数は決して多いとはいえな
い-ただし,扱う時期をさらに1760年代まで拡大すれば,この数はさらに増えて
くる-が,議員でもあった彼らの存在は, Society ofArtsの活動にとって重要な
役割をはたしたように思われる.本稿では活動そのものは埠外としているので,ここ
では指摘しておくだけにとどめるが, Society of Artsの活動が契機となって1750
年代末から1760年代前半までに,二つの議会制定法が修正されたのである.一方,
逆に議会での請願がこの団体の懸賞活動に組み込まれた例もあった.議員のうちで,
特に注目したいのは, 60年代後半に庶民院の財政委員会の議長となったCharles
Whitworthである.彼については,これまで猟官派の代表的人物として語られてい
るだけ(Whitwothの項目の5)に記したL.Namierの著作を参照)だが, Society
ofArtsでの活動は議会における彼の財政委員会の活動と重なるところが多く,これ
までの理解は明らかに一面的である.
政治世界とのつながりは議会だけでなく,政府ともあったように思われる.その具
体的な有り様は,今後の研究に委ねざるをえないが, 1758年から副会長の一人となっ

たEdward Hooper (関税局理事)やこの団体の植民地・交易委員会の委員長をつ
とめたJohn Pownall (政府の植民地・貿易委員会の事務局長)には注目しておかね
ばならない.
次に,活動的会員の社会活動に目を転じてみよう.特に顕著なことは,少なからぬ
会員が,ロンドンでの慈善活動にかかわっていたことである.たとえば, Foundling
Hospital, Marine Society, Magdalen Hospitalの関係者が目につく.このことの
意味をどう受け止めるかば今後の重要な検討課題だが,一般論としていえば,特に真
正ジェントルマンならば,彼らは地主としての社会的地位ゆえに,多かれ少なかれそ
の地域において何らかの慈善活動を行なっていたと考えられる.したがって,慈善活
動への関与それ自体が,注目に値するというわけではない.今後解明すべき点は,こ
れらロンドンでの慈善活動とSOciety of Artsの活動との具体的な関係についてであ
る.
最後に, 3.について述べておこう.この図については,あらかじめ留意しておくべ
き点がある.この図をみると,活動的会員がが幾つかのグループに分けられるような
印象をうける.この印象はおそらく間違ってはいないと思われるが,しかし同時に注
意すべきなのは,そのグループの構成が図に示したようなまとまりになるかば確かで
ないことである.はっきりしていることは矢印の前後だけであって,たとえはLord
Romney (Robert Marsham)と一人とんだBrandenburghとの間に直接関係があっ
たか否かは不明である.さらにこの図は,グループが異なる人々の間で結びつきがあっ
たことを排除しているわけではない.また,矢印の前後の人と人の関係も,その程度
はいろいろでありうる.したがって,この図だけで, SOcietyofArtsの人脈のすべ
てを理解することはできない.
こうした制約があるもの,この図からわかることも,もちろんある.第1は,この
団体の設立者とみなしうる, William Shipleyの役割についてである.彼が推薦した
活動的な会員は2名にとどまり,しかもそのうち, ThomasMooreは懸賞活動の結
果(懸賞金を獲得)入会したと考えられるので,おそらく彼らの間に以前からの直接
的なっながりはない.したがって,人的関係に関するかぎり,彼の影響力は小さいと
推定される.無論,彼が他のグループの人物と面識をもっていた可能性は否定できな
いが,彼がSOciety of Arts設立のために勧誘活動した上でこうであることを考えれ
ば,その可能性は小さい.
第2は,人脈のうえで大きな位置を占めたのは,本稿が対象とする時期に副会長の
職にあり,また1761年から18世紀末まで会長をつとめた, LordRomneyに端を発
する人々であった.この点からすれば, LordRomneyの地位は名目上のものでなく,
実質を伴ったものとみなせよう.

第3は,この図は会員の相互関係におけるkey manが誰であるかを示唆している.
その代表的な例は,活動的な会員13名(全体の20%近く)を推薦した内科医の
Thomas Manninghamである.彼の人脈の一部は,彼が内科医であったことと関係
しているように思われるが,残念なことに,彼の経歴についてこれまでにわかってい
ることはきわめて少なく,それぞれの会員が彼とどのような関係にあったのかはわか
らない.彼は, H.BakerやN.Crispについで会議や各委員会への出席回数が多く,
これらの二人とともにSOciety ofArtsの活動の中心にあったと目される人物である
ので,今後さらに情報収集が必要となろう.この点は,彼についで多くの活動的会員
を推薦したEdward Wadeついても同様である.
第4は,比較的まとまった集団と考えてよさそうなのは, Sir Henry Cheereから
始まる芸術家のグループである.もちろん,このグループのメンバーすべてが芸術家
ではなかったが.
以上のはかにも, 2.での記載事項を勘案すれば,会員どうしの相互関係についてわ
かる点は多々あるが,ここでは今後の研究方向に関わる点に限定しておいた.本稿の
データをもとにすれば, Society of Artsの活動がこれまで以上に理解しやすいもの
となろう.
