Beware of Hijacked Email Account Scam Messages!
Beware of Hijacked Email Account Scam Messages!
The situation: A friend's email account is being used by someone who sends fake
emails from it in the attempt to cheat people who appear in the email's address book. In
other words, a "scammer" is sending emails that seem to come from a friend of yours.
The problem: You receive an email message asking you to send money to your “friend”
(in reality a scammer) who is supposedly in urgent trouble in a foreign country. To be
sure, the message is not from your friend, but is in fact from someone who is trying to
trick you into sending money to an overseas bank account.
A scam email example: "I was traveling in Greece and was robbed! Please send me
$2,000 via Western Union so I can get a plane ticket home! I'm really upset and can't
think straight. Please, please help me!!"
What to do:
1) If you are worried that a message such as the above may be true, contact your friend
directly by telephone to confirm that he or she is OK.
2) If you believe that the message is fake, ignore it.
Of course, in either case, you may want to report to your friend that his or her email
account has apparently been hijacked.
