チャールズ・ブース (1840-1916) はリバプールの裕福な非国教徒の家庭に生まれ、海運業に従事
する一方で、ヴィクトリア朝時代の貧困状況に深く関心を抱いていました。事業に成功したブー
スは 1875 年にロンドンに移住し、1870 年代の不況により深刻化した貧困に対する独自の社会
調査を開始しました。彼は優れた助手、Beatrice Potter ( 後の Beatrice Webb) や、Maurice Paul、
Tesse Argyll、George Duckworth、Ernest Aves、Clare Collect 等と共にロンドンの労働者、雇用主、
企業にアンケートとインタビューを行いました。統計的方法と事例研究を組み合わせた彼らの調
査結果は『ロンドン市民の生活と労働　17 巻』が刊行される際の基礎資料となり、続く B.S. ロ
ウントリー (Rowntree) のヨーク市の貧困調査とともに英国の社会福祉の発展に大きな影響を与
えました。
本マイクロフィルムは英国図書館が所蔵する調査のオリジナル資料を収録したものです。アン
ケート、統計、聞き取り調査記録、地図等が含まれており、社会踏査 (Social Survey) の先駆となっ
たこれらの資料は価値あるものとなっています。
