and porcine intestinal spirochaetosis

Abstract
Swine dysentery and porcine intestinal spirochaetosis are two major diseases
causing spirochetal enteritis in pigs. Swine dysentery is a contagious large
intestinal disease of the pigs, that affected pigs exhibit hemorrhagic diarrhea. The
active pathogen is Brachyspira hyodysenteriae. Diarrhea containing mucous and
the blood is confirmed as porcine intestinal spirochaetosis. The pathogen is B.
pilosicoli. B. pilosicoli can be isolated from a human, a primate, a dog, rodents
and birds, and it is also important as zoonosis. We succeeded in performing a
reproduction of the characteristic mucosal lesion of the spirochetal enteritis by the
infection of a young chicken with B. hyodysenteriae and B. pilosicoli. In this
report, I describe an outline of the pathological views of an experimental model
and a natural infection of an animal with spirochaetosis.

Abstract
A length of obstructed jejunum was resected surgically from a
30-month-old Holstein cow. Several masses were grossly detected in the
jejunal wall, and microscopically, the masses consisted of multifocal
granuloma of epithelioid cells and occasional multinucleated giant cells.
Although
acid-fast
bacilli
were not
found,
some
argyrophilic,
gram-positive, and periodic acid Schiff-negative, filamentous bacteria
were detected in the cytoplasm of the epithelioid cells and
multinucleated giant cells. This argyrophilic gram-positive filamentous
bacterium appears to be responsible for jejunal multifocal granulomas,
which resulted in obstructive ileus in this cow. Brachyspira may be a
candidate of a list of differential diagnosis of this filamentous
bacterium, which causes such rare intestinal lesions.

Summary
Brachyspira
hyodysenteriae
and
Brachyspira
pilosicoli
are
associated with swine dysentery and porcine colonic spirochetosis in
pigs. Molecular (the nox and 16S ribosomal RNA genes) and
biochemical analysis of atypical strongly beta-hemolytic isolates
suggests that a novel species has emerged in the United States, Canada
and European countries with the proposed name “Brachyspira
hampsonii ”. This species is divided into two clades, “B. hampsonii ”
clade I and clade ϩ. It causes clinical disease similar to that caused by
B. hyodysenteriae. The objective of this review is to summarize the
current knowledge on the pathogenicity and prevalence of “B.
hampsonii ”.

Aims and Scope
‘Brachyspira’is issued once a year, one volume a year, by the Japanese
Society of Brachyspira and the purpose of the journal is to publish results and
information relevant to Brachyspira. ‘Brachyspira’provides a medium for
publication of review, original results, proceedings of special lectures, symposia
and workshops to the meeting of Japanese Society of Brachyspira and short
technical note. (See special information for technical note)
Submission
The manuscript must be written either in clear, grammatical English or
Japanese, and authors are requested to submit their original manuscript and
figures with two clear copies to Editor-in-Chief.

The authors are encouraged to be a member of the Japanese Society of

Preparation of Manuscript in English
The manuscript must be type-written, double-spaced, with wide margins
(minimum 25 mm all side on one side of good quality white B5 (182x257 mm)
paper. Good quality typescripts with a font size of 12 pt are required. The
corresponding author should be identified in including a fax number and email
address. Authors are advised to consult a recent issue of the journal for style if
possible. The editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards of
uniformity. Submitted manuscript will not be returned to authors and Society
cannot accept responsibility for damage or loss of papers so authors must retain a
copy of their manuscript.

Electronic submission with the final accepted version of the manuscript
Authors should submit and electronic copy of their paper, including tables and

Review & Proof
