文 につ い て の一 考 察

じめ に
小 論 で 扱 う対 象 は、find+再
帰 代 名 詞+補
語 の構 文 に な っ て い る も の で
あ る 。 補 語 に 来 る もの は 現 在 分 詞 、 過 去 分 詞 、 形 容 詞 、 名 詞 、 前 置 詞 句 と様 々
で あ る が 、 こ の よ う な 構 文 をfind+再
Complement)の
頭 文 字 を 取 っ て 、 便 宜 上 、FOC構
小 論 で は、 こ のFOC構

帰 代 名 詞+補
語(Find+Oneself+
文 と呼 ぶ こ と に す る。
文 の意 味 的 特 徴 を 考察 して い きた い。
文 の意 味特 性
先 ず 、 動 詞findに
は、 目的語 が 目的 格 補 語 の 状 態 に な って い る こ と に気
付 くと い う意 味 が あ る が、FOC構
文 の場 合 、 目的 語 が 再 帰 代 名 詞 で 主 語 と
同一 指示 とい う こ とに な り、 主 語 の 人物 が 自分 の して い る こ と、 自分 の置 か
れ て い る状 態 に気 付 く と い うこ と にな る。 とい う こ とは、 そ の状 態 に主 語 、
即 ち 、本 人 が そ れ まで 気 が 付 いて い な か った とい う こと で、 この よ うな英 文
が 日本語 に訳 され る場 合 は 「思 わ ず何 々 して い た」 とか 「気 が付 くと何 々 し
て い た」 とい うよ うに 訳 され る こ とが 多 い。 ど の よ うに訳 され るか は個 々の
文脈 に拠 るが、 自分 の して い る こ と に不 意 に気 付 く とい う点 で、 この よ うな
英 文 には何 らか の驚 き が 含 意 され る と考 え られ る。
(1)FOC:[十surprised]
この 「気 付 く」 とい うこ とか ら言 え るの は、 しよ うと思 って してい る行 為、
予 測 され る事 態 はFOC構
文 に は出 て こな い と い う こ とで あ る。 例 え ば、
次 の よ うに駅 で友 人 と 会 う予定 で家 を 出 て、 駅 に 向 か って歩 い て い る 自分 に

気 付 くと い う こ とは考 え られ な い。

そ の 行 為 を 意 図 し て い る 、 予 期 し て い る 時 に はFOC構

と言 え よ う。

い う の は 、[+surprised]の
て い た こ と な ら驚 き は し な い 。FOCの
で な く[+surprised]を
前 提 で あ る。 予 期 し
場 合 、 非 意 図性 、 偶 然 性 と い う だ け
考 え る の は、 自分 の 事 な の に気 付 い て い な か った
と い う 驚 き が 加 わ る と 考 え る か らで あ る 。
ま た 、 「気 付 く」 の 前 提 と し て 、 気 付 く こ と の 可 能 な 事 態 で な け れ ば な ら
な い 。 っ ま り、 自 分 で 感 知 出 来 な い 事 態 はFOC構
文 に出 て来 る ことはな
い。 例 え ば 、 「眠 っ て い る」 と い う の は 、 本 人 に は 知 覚 不 可 で あ る し、 呼 吸
して い る と い う の も普 通 は 意 識 し な い こ と で あ る 。(6)の
く な っ て い る 場 合 は 、 気 付 き 得 る 事 態 と な り、FOC構
よ う に、 息 が 苦 し

い ら れ て い る場 合 と予 想 さ れ て い た こ と の 逆 が 起 こ っ た と い う よ う に 文 脈 か
ら驚 きが 察 知 で き る場 合 が あ る と思 わ れ る 。 先 ず 、 驚 き を 表 わ す 表 現 が 見 ら
れ る 場 合 を 見 て い く。

表 わす 表 現 は見 られ な いが 、 文 脈 か ら予 期 して い たの と正 反対 の事 が 起 こ っ
た と い う、 文 脈 か ら意 外 な事 が 起 こっ た と言 え る場 合 で あ る。

お か しな こ と を して い る 自 分 に 気 付 く と い う こ と は、 我 々 の 日常 、 経 験 す る
こ と で あ る。 しか し、 自 分 が 怒 っ て い る と か 、 自 分 が 誰 か を 見 て い る と か 、
