Water quality of all rivers improved with time and the improvement was seen as a gradual reduction in the pollution loads from unsewered population and agricultural land. Temporal variations in the water quality of each river could be used to characterize them in terms of expansion of sewerage system and decrease in agricultural land use. This study was undertaken to spatially examine the present status of river water quality in the basin. Groundwater circulation influenced both water quality and quantity. COD, total phosphorus and total dissolved solids showed good correlation with unsewerd population and agriculture area. Total nitrogen had good correlation with atmospheric nitrogen deposition loads.
