Galaxy S4. Portable WiFi HotSpot
Portable Wi-Fi HotSpot This feature allows you to turn your device into a Wi-Fi Hotspot so you can share your mobile data connection. The feature works best when used in conjunction with 4G data services (although 3G service can also be used). The Wi-Fi Hotspot connectivity is a wireless version of this same functionality and allows you to provide Internet connectivity to multiple devices. Important! The Wi-Fi Hotspot service can not be active at the same time as Wi-Fi. Please close your Wi-Fi connection prior to launching this service. Note: You must have a tethering plan on your account in order to use the Wi-Fi HotSpot. You cannot use data on the device while using Mobile HotSpot. To activate the Wi-Fi Hotspot service: 1. From the main Settings page, tap Connections tab ➔ More networks ➔ Tethering and portable hotspot ➔ Portable Wi-Fi hotspot. 244 2. In a single motion touch and slide the Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot slider to the right to turn it on. 3. Read the on-screen notification regarding data use and tap Accept ➔ OK. 4. Tap Configure to access the settings. 5. Edit the Network SSID name and then write it down. 6. Enable the Hide my device field if you would like to not broadcast your SSID name to nearby devices. 7. Verify the Security field is set to WPA2 PSK. 8. Enter a new password then write it down. – Additional options include Show password and Show advanced options. 9. Tap Save to store the new settings. 10. Confirm the Wi-Fi HotSpot active icon the top of the screen. appears at Note: By default, prior to the initial setup process, the connection is unsecure. It is recommended you create your own password prior to your initial connection. Note: The Wi-Fi Hotspot drains your device’s battery at a much faster rate than when using any other feature combination. The best way to keep using the device as a Hotspot is to have it connected to a power supply. To change the Wi-Fi Hotspot password: 1. From the main Settings page, tap Connections tab ➔ More networks ➔ Tethering and portable hotspot ➔ Portable Wi-Fi hotspot field and then select Configure. 2. Tap the Security field and select WPA2 PSK. To connect to the Wi-Fi Hotspot: 1. Enable Wi-Fi (wireless) functionality on your target device (laptop, media device, etc.). 2. Scan for Wi-Fi networks from the external device and select your device’s Portable Wi-Fi HotSpot name from the network list. • The SSID name for your device’s hotspot is determined by what you entered into the Network SSID field. • You can change the name by tapping Configure ➔ Network SSID and changing the entry. 3. With security enabled, delete the previous password and enter a new one into the Password field. Important! The more complex the password, the harder it will be for intruders to break your security. It is recommended that you not use names, birthdays, or other personal information. 4. Tap Save to store the new settings. 3. Select this HotSpot and follow your on-screen instructions to complete the connection. 4. Launch your Web browser to confirm you have an Internet connection. Connections 245 To mange connected devices: This feature allows you to provide MAC filtering on your device. This is similar to a “VIP list” where only device on the list are allowed access. 1. From the main Settings page, tap Connections tab ➔ More networks ➔ Tethering and portable hotspot ➔ Portable Wi-Fi hotspot. 2. Tap Allowed devices. 3. Tap (Add new device) to add devices to the allowed for connection list. 4. Enter the Device name and MAC address. 5. Tap OK to save the new device. 246
