EXPLORE WHAT THE NIKKEI CENTRE HAS TO OFFER
As we approach the midway point of 2014, I would like to thank
everyone for their continued support and participation in the myriad
of activities that we are pleased to host here at your Nikkei National
Museum & Cultural Centre.
Published three times a year, the Nikkei Place Network
is your source for programming at the Nikkei Centre
Our Programming team has been hard at work to ensure that we
maintain and develop a menu of activities for young and old alike to
enjoy. We want to ensure that there is something for everyone at the
Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre..
On that note, if you haven't experienced it yet, we are very proud
of our latest Museum Exhibit Jesse Nishihata – Visual Storyteller, an
eponymous retrospective exhibition on the work of this remarkable
Nikkei pioneer filmmaker. From mid-May through summer, the
Museum will be transformed by artist Steven Nunoda with his
haunting sculpture installation of Ghostown.
In addition, your Nikkei Centre team has been building on the overwhelming success of
our 2013 Nikkei Place Matsuri Family Festival. The 2014 edition is going to build on that
success and we will be bringing from Japan Mr. Hiroshi Yamaguchi, tsugaru shamisen
(guitar like string instrument) player who will surely entertain our Matsuri guests of all
ages. In its short life, this outstanding family festival has set the stage to become one of
the most-attended cultural events in all of Vancouver, and we will continue to focus on the
full Japanese experience that the many Matsuris in Japan enjoy. Mark August 30 and 31
on your calendars so you don't miss this fantastic festival.
Finally, as we plan our year, we will continue to need all of your support. If you haven't yet
renewed your membership to the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre, I would once
again encourage you to do so and invite your friends and family to join us as well. Not only will

Ghostown
An installation by Steven Nunoda
June 14 – August 31, 2014
Ghostown recalls and memorializes
a pivotal event in Steven Nunoda’s
family history, the internment of 22,000
persons of Japanese descent during
the Second World War. Combining 200
miniature tarpaper models with audio
and video, the exhibit provides a focus
for community remembrance. The work
comments on immigrant experiences,
broader issues of human rights, displaced
populations and the effects of racism.

Manga Camp is a fun-filled week of
authentic experiences in Japanese Culture,
with a special focus on the art of MANGA.
Manga is a very popular genre of illustration
in the world of comics, originating in Japan.
Through daily workshops, established local
artists will share their craft and guide the camp kids to produce their own manga! The
camp will also feature fun games and hands-on activities such as martial arts, brush
painting, or tea ceremony by our community elders and artisans.

ACTIVITIES
With help from a wonderful grant from Canadian Heritage,
Museums Assistance Program, we have expanded and
improved our research room. We also received funding to
catalogue our library and reference files. Researchers are
invited to sleuth through our collections by appointment
from Tuesday to Friday between 11am-5pm. Call Alexis or
Linda to arrange a time - 604.777.7000.
Preserving our Heritage
The Nikkei National Museum houses
and preserves extensive Japanese Canadian
collections – including artifacts, archives, historic
photographs, personal papers, and beautiful artworks. A
special thanks goes to several funding agencies that are
supporting our preservation and digitization efforts: The
BC History Digitization Program at the Irving K Barber
Learning Centre at UBC, the Museums Assistance Program
of Canadian Heritage, the Young Canada Works program
of Canadian Heritage and the Canada Summer Jobs
program of Service Canada.

NNMCC Chigiri-e Workshop
(Paper Painting Art)

Teacher will provide a Chinese brush, a flatpen,
tweezers, rice glue, cardboard, container for
water and rice glue to use during class.
*Min. 4 people per class.
Chigiri-e is a traditional Japanese art using handdyed Japanese paper called Washi. It is torn into
different shapes and sizes of paper to glue onto
a board to form a picture. Visually it looks like an
oil painting, but it is all made with paper.
NNMCC Japanese Folk Dance

Shall we Japanese Folk Dance? Bon Odori is
fun and easy to learn. Come learn some basic
steps and a few easy dances and shine at the
next summer festival or bon odori. Beginners
and male participants welcome. Please wear
comfortable clothing and bring a tenugui
(cotton towel) if you have one.

The August tea workshop will focus on
the art of selecting and arranging
flowers specific to tea ceremony,
known as Chabana. Chabana
is different from the art of
Ikebana flower arrangement and
requires only a knife or pair of
scissors and a container. We will
participate in a modified version
of the game “Hana-yose” (gathered
flowers), where participants get a chance to
arrange flowers in the tea room.

The May workshop will celebrate the “Tango
no Sekku” festival for the health and protection
of children. Join us for a children’s themed

and the whole family to enjoy a tea ceremony
together. Kids will get a chance to make a bowl
of tea and serve it to accompanying adults.

Maiko Behr holds a master’s degree
in Japanese art and literature and
is a certified instructor in the
Omotesenke tradition of chanoyu.
The workshop will be conducted
in English and will be broken down
into lecture, demonstration, and
hands-on participation components.
No prior knowledge of tea ceremony or
Japanese language is required.
JUNE: All About Wagashi
Sunday, June 8, 1pm to 4pm

June 16 was historically an auspicious day when
sweets were eaten to ward off illness and bring
good fortune and today it is known as “Wagashi
no hi” (traditional sweets day). The June workshop
will examine the history of sweets accompanying
tea drinking in Japan and will discuss different
types of sweets and how they are selected in the
tea room to reflect changes in the seasons or to
celebrate different types of occasions.
Please note: This is not a wagashi-making class.

Ji Hong Tai Chi is both an effective martial art
and a healthy exercise system, deeply rooted
in Chinese tradition and philosophy. Tai Chi

Chi’s movements provide a great mind/body
connection and workout, with practitioners

Dazzle and shine at this year’s summer festivals
in a yukata! Yukata is a casual summer kimono
worn at festivals and fireworks in Japan. This
workshop will teach you the basics so you can
put on a yukata and obi by yourself. Parents can
also learn how to dress their children!
Please bring: yukata, obi (belt), 3 koshihimo
(waist strings), a towel, and wear a sleeveless
shirt and shorts to class. Yukata and obi will also
be available for purchase from the instructor on
the day of the workshop.

basic techniques.
New students will learn the basics of tea
ceremony in the Urasenke style, including how
to walk in the tea room and how to drink tea.

Martial Gym is a year-round program for all
ages. The program starts in the fall and ends
with a season-end performance in June.
Classes bring diversity from gymnastics and the
practicality of martial arts into its programs.
Children learn different rolls, jumps, obstacles,
handstands, cartwheels, skipping and a wealth
of other movement patterns so they run and
react faster and have better control over their
bodies than typical at their age. Teenagers and
adults enjoy the class because they not only
exercise the body but also challenge them at an
intellectual level.

Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society News
Spring 2014
It seems that we’ve witnessed a real
increase in public awareness around
dementia in the last few months, and
cities and organizations are moving
ahead with steps to support an
age friendly society. The Vancouver
Foundation has approved $30,000
funding for our society to develop a
dementia friendly social program Iki Iki
that will be hosted not only at Nikkei
Place but beyond. There will be Seniors
Lounge at Nikkei Centre, starting April
2014, and starting in Summer 2014, we
will be providing additional support to
Tonari Gumi’s Homebound Program to
help with dementia friendly activities.
We are hoping to expand to one other
location either in Richmond or Surrey.
All of this is good news for seniors and
their families. Seniors can continue
participating and families can feel
supported by having a break. The
project title is Iki Iki, and its goal is to
help our community respond to the
growing social needs of seniors with
dementia. As part of this project, we will
be training volunteers in and around the
community so and soliciting the support
of organizations to become dementia
friendly.
There are other signs of the good work
happening around Greater Vancouver,
notably, the City of New Westminster
decided on December 9, 2013 to proceed
with a Dementia-Friendly Community
Initiative (complete with a work plan).
The City of Vancouver is moving ahead
on its Age-Friendly Action Plan to
support residents with dementia (e.g.
the training of outside City workers).
Terry Lake, the Minister of Health has
mentioned the province’s Dementia
Action Plan in the media on several
occasions (in relation to the missing
seniors reports).

貼りあわせることにより1枚の絵にしていきます。
浴衣で夏祭りや花火に行こう！
いを学び、水分を含んだブラシを使った線の描画、紙
の質による接着剤のつけ方を学びながら、3時間の
ワークショップで1枚の絵を完成させます。

目していきます。茶花は華道とは異なり、使用する道
具も一本のナイフと一丁のはさみ、

す。16世紀の茶道家、千利休は

生け」
と言いました。今回の講義では、参加者の皆様
が茶室で花を生ける
「花寄せ」
を略式で体験していた

日系文化センター･博物館にて様々な教育プログラムを
体験してみませんか？
日系カナダ人の年長者や作家の方々にお会いして、
日系
カナダ人の歴史や文化について、
または多文化社会のカ
ナダにおける重要な役割を学びましょう。教育プログラム
は通常英語で行われます。
＜社会見学型＞　体験学習　日系カナダ人の歴史と文化の100年を紹介します。教育
展示の見学、日系人と接する機会、空手や折り紙などの
芸術と日本文化をお楽しみください。120分。生徒1名に
つき$8。
「日本のマンガアート」に焦点をあてた本物の日本文化
を体験できます。参加者にはワークショップを通じて地
元アーティストから漫画制作の手法を学び、最終的には
オリジナルの漫画を作っていただきます。
またその他、武
道、墨絵、茶道などといった日本伝統の楽しいゲームや
催しも予定しています。

＜学校訪問型＞　日系の印象
戦争前後の日系カナダ人にまつわる歴史を歴史資料を
交えながらお話します。最大生徒数35人、50分、$95。交

毎回大好評の ｢ 古本市 ｣ を開催します。日本の小説、
コミック、児童書、雑誌など新たな古本も続々入荷して
います。太陽を楽しむこれからの季節は本をお供に出か
けられてはいかがですか ?
今回も食品の販売、企業ブース、お子さまが楽しめるキッ
ズ ･ ゾーンもあります。
また日系センターでは古本のご寄付を随時受け付けて

「ゴーストタウン」展は、ヌノダ家にとって第二次世界
大戦時における日系人 22,000 人の強制収容という
重大な出来事を喚起させます。タール紙で作られた
200 個のミニチュア仮設住宅模型に音と映像が重ねら
れた展示は、日系コミュニティーに追悼の機会をもた
らします。この展示は移民体験や広い意味における人
権、強制追放者、そして人種差別の影響について物
語ります。

楽しめる催しを提供すべく日々努めております。
我々が自信を持って現在開催中の博物館展示“JesseNishihata–VisualStoryteller”に、もしまだご来場
されていないようでしたら、是非ともお越しください。日系映画制作の先駆者、ジェシー・ニシハタ氏の過去
の作品を年代別に取り扱った展示です。さらに、６月中旬から夏まで、博物館は、スティーブン・ヌノダ氏によ
る、呪われた「ゴーストタウン」をテーマとした現代彫刻アートに展示を変えます。
また、昨年の夏日系プレースチームが手掛けた「日系祭り」は、お陰様で大成功を収めることができまし
た。2014年度の「日系祭り」では、津軽三味線奏者の山口ひろし氏を日本からお迎えする予定で、老若男女
が楽しめる様々な催しを企画してお届けします。昨年から始まったばかりではありますが、
