The EJCA was one of those founding members, and has participated every year except one since then. Even the 1987 Black Friday tornado did not stop the participation. The Festival has grown to the world’s largest cultural festival, and is a real attraction for visitors to Edmonton. There are over 60 cultural groups now represented, and over 300,000 visitors attended in 2014. ４０年前にエドモントンの１１のカルチャー・グループが集まってエドモ ントン・ヘリテージ・フェスティバルを始めました。ＥＪＣＡはこの創始者 グループの一員です。この４０年間、一度だけ不参加でしたが、あと は総て参加してきました。１９８７年夏、エドモントンが竜巻に襲われ て大きな被害を被った時もＥＪＣＡはフェスティバルに参加しました。こ の４０年間でフェスティバルは大きく成長し、昨年は６０以上のグルー プが参加して、延べ３０万以上の人が二日半のフィスティバルに訪れ ました。この種のフェスティバルでは世界最大規模を誇っています。 Volunteers required for the Festival! ヘリテージ祭り -ボランティアをお願いします! Volunteer training is Saturday July 25. The volunteer Appreciation BBQ is September 26. Calgary Japanese Festival Omatsuri Calgary Japanese Community Association invites EJCA members and friends to the fifth Calgary Japanese Festival “Omatsuri”. In 2014, there were 5,000 people attended and all enjoyed Japanese culture. According to our by-laws, the Board of Directors is required to hold annual elections for the board positions. As well, the Treasurer will be presenting our annual financial statement. We are calling for about five nominations for positions on the board. Below is a summary of the position description of a member-at-large director position. Please note that once the member-at-large directors have been elected to the board, the directors nominate and decide from amongst themselves certain individuals to serve in the st Executive positions (President; 1 Vice-President; Treasurer; Secretary). She/he serves for a two-year term. She/he supports general actitivies of the Board of Directors such as approving and monitoring policy and budget, representing the Board of Directors and serving on program and services committees of the EJCA. Her/his time commitent will be one monthly board meeting (about two hours), her/his tasks as a board member (about two hours a month) and time spent on her/his programs and committees (varies). We would like to acknowledge, with gratitude, the following groups and individuals who helped create a wonderful Kurimoto Japanese Garden Spring Festival on June 7, 2015. Close to 1,800 visitors (a record attendance) enjoyed the festivities and the beautiful day. I would like to acknowledge our board members and the many volunteers who organized our very successful and first ever Izakaya Evening (April 11) and Cooking Classes (May 9). EJCA is very fortunate to have an active membership that supports our Association’s efforts in offering superb events and programs by both attending and/or volunteering to make those events successful. EJCA members step up when their skills and expertise are needed most but most importantly, our members give their time to serve our membership and promote Japanese culture in the Edmonton region. Today, the Edmonton Japanese Community Association calls out again to our membership for its support. We can have a maximum of 13 positions on the Board of Directors and currently have only 7 filled (President; VicePresident; Secretary; Treasurer; Directors-at-Large (3). In the fall, 4 current board members will end their 2 year term on the board and my hope is that they will run again. While we acknowledge the great volunteer effort put forth by our members, we are reaching out to our volunteers more than ever. The board is looking for at least 5 new board members to be nominated and elected at the 2015 Annual General Meeting. The board has updated all position descriptions. These are published on the EJCA website (www.ejca.org -click on “about us" tab, "board members and partnerships”). While the skills and expertise of our volunteers are important to the success of EJCA, there are many key values and beliefs and personal qualities the Association is seeking in potential board members. If you recall, the EJCA Board went through a visioning/strategic workshop in fall 2014 with the aim of revising our vision and mission. The following are proposed new vision and mission statements. VISION STATEMENT: The Edmonton Japanese Community Association is a community of members whose vision is to create a shared experience of culture while increasing the awareness of Japanese culture. MISSION STATEMENT: The Edmonton Japanese Community Association builds a supportive community to explore Japanese culture by providing place and programs, as well as creating partnerships for EJCA members and people in the greater Edmonton area. The EJCA is seeking individuals whose values and beliefs align with the Association’s vision and mission. With this vision and mission as our foundation, there are several individual qualities that make the board more effective; to help make good decisions, and to help our Association function at the highest level. Are you a team player….can you put aside your own biases and differences and consider the best decision for the Association and all of our members? Do you know our community….are you aware of the needs of our clubs, our members, the diversity of our membership, and trends? Are you a good listener….do you hear all sides of an issue and are then able to make thoughtful decisions? Do you have a passion for Japanese culture…do you have an interest in promoting Japanese culture and planning events so that others can experience it? Are you willing to make the commitment…will you commit the time necessary for monthly board meetings, event planning meetings, and other committee meetings? On Sunday, Oct 18, 2015, EJCA will have its Annual General Meeting, where the membership will elect its 2015-16 Board of Directors. EJCA is looking for a few of our members to put their names forward who have the commitment, passion and drive to serve our members. EJCA is a strong and healthy and dynamic organization. We have about 600 members, 18 active clubs, and our support of both Explore Japan and Japan Today reach hundreds of junior and senior high students each year. The future of EJCA lies within its leadership and this leadership starts with our members at the club level. As a member of EJCA, each club and every member of that club relies upon the work of the Board of Directors. This is how individuals can make a difference in the Association…by committing their energy and talent to ensuring the future growth and development of EJCA. to help lead the EJCA into the next decade. We hope that EJCA’s strong performance over the years and our dynamic board will attract others to become involved. July - August 2015 5 Moshi Moshi The EJCA Culture Program Achievement in the 2014-15 Sanae Ohki One of the mandates of the EJCA is to promote understanding of Japanese culture among EJCA members and people in Edmonton. Japanese culture is rich in contents and the EJCA club activities in tea ceremony, flower arrangement, calligraphy, bonsai, Japanese drums, karate, ju-jitsu, kendo, Japanese conversations, Japanese programs for kids, Japanese dance, chigiri-e, and karaoke. Many people also come to the EJCA Centre to enjoy the New Year’s Day party, Hina-doll Festival, Izakaya Evening, and bazaar. The EJCA also promote Japanese culture through its library, Japanese garden, the Edmonton Heritage Festival, culture scholarship, and history project. Now, on top of those things, the EJCA has the Culture Program Committee which organizes and carries out several other activities. Here is a summary of those activities from July 2014 to June 2015. You are quite welcome to join the activities as an instructor. For most programs, those who ask us to conduct those activities pay us fees and we pay an honoraria to the instructors. 1. Japan Today Grade 8 students in Alberta have a unit to study about Japan in social studies. We offer a two-hour program to supplement this unit. Students come to the EJCA Center to have hands-on experience with Japanese culture. Japan Today now offers: introduction to the Japanese language (main features of the Japanese language, writing names in katakana and practicing greetings), introduction to Japanese society (history, geography, culture, family, school life, technology and food), experience of wearing yukata, doing origami, practising kendama and karate. Mrs. Yukiko Nagakura is the program leader and works with 12 EJCA members who help her as instructors and assistants. 2. Explore Japan This is another hands-on experience of Japanese culture. This two-day program is for Grade 11 students held at a school building in Edmonton and organized by a joint committee of EJCA, Japanese language teachers at high schools, Alberta Education, Edmonton Public School Board, and the Consulate-General of Japan in Calgary. Last year, 300 high school students participated in six workshops over the twos days, November 4 and 5, 2015. The workshops were calligraphy, tea ceremony, wearing yukata and drawing manga. Presentations included: experience of a home-stay student in Japan, student exchange programs, practising on Japanese drums and …..cont to next page 6 July - August 2015 EJCA 日本文化振興部 1 年の活動 大木 早苗 EJCA の活動目的の一つは会員同士で、又広くエドモントン一般の 人々のために、日本文化を知る機会を作ることです。日本文化とい うととても間口が広いですが、EJCA には、茶道、華道、書道、盆栽、 太鼓、空手、柔術、武道、日本語会話、日本語キッズ、日本舞踊、ち ぎり絵、日本の歌、等のクラブがあり、大勢の会員が参加していま す。又、新年会、ひな祭り、居酒屋の夕べ、子供の日、バザーなど の活動で、会員誰もが多様な日本文化を楽しんでいます。図書室、 庭園部、ヘリテージ祭り部、文化奨励金制度、歴史プロジェクトなど も日本文化を推奨する活動ですね。 そして、日本文化振興部では会員だけでなく、エドモントン一般の 人々にも日本文化に触れる機会を作っています。2014 年 7 月から 2015 年 6 月の 1 年間に行った活動を紹介し、このような活動をご 一緒にしたいと思う方に、是非私たちの活動に参加していただきたく ご案内します。ほとんどの場合、依頼者が費用を負担し講師や助手 に謝礼をお払いします。 １． Japan Today プログラム アルバータの中学 2 年の社会科の中に日本について学習する単元 があります。この単元の延長として、2 時間で次のような体験学習 が出来るプログラムを提供しています。 日本語の紹介（日本語や文字の特徴、名前をカタカナで 書く、挨拶の言葉の練習）、 日本の社会全般の紹介（歴史、地理、文化、家族、学校生 活、新しいテクノロジー、食物）、ゆかたの試着、折り紙、 剣玉など遊びの体験、 空手体験 EJCA では 2003 年から Japan Today を提供しています。その前 は総領事館が行っていました。今年は EJCA Centre での開催が 31 回（21 校）、各学校へ出向いて行う出張開催が 5 回（5 校）、 計２，３５８名の生徒が日本文化を経験しました。特に、Fox Creek, Rocky Mountain House などのエドモントンやカルガリーから離 れた学校など日本文化に接する機会が少ない所からの参加があり、 Japan Today の価値を再認識しました。今年は、日本の社会全般 の紹介ビデオを作り直しました。出張開催をするのは、中学 2 年が ６－8 学級ある規模の大きな学校で、1 日の開催で 160-260 人の生 徒が参加しています。 このプログラムは長倉由紀子さんが中心になって EJCA の会員 12 名が講師や助手として活躍しています。このプログラムの為に、 EJCA は男子・女子用のゆかたセットを３０人分、書道用具を 40 人 分持っています。 ２． Explore Japan プログラム Explore Japan は日本語の授業を受講している高校 1 年生を対象 に年に 1 回、2 日間行う日本文化体験プログラムです。EJCA、高校の 日本語教師、アルバータ教育省、エドモントン公立校教育委員会、カ ルガリー総領事館の代表からなる運営委員会が Explore Japan を計 画･準備しています。去年は 2014 年 11 月４・５日に開催され、300 人 の高校生が次の 6 つのワークショップ全部に参加しました。 書道 茶道 ゆかたの試着とまんが 日本訪問の体験と留学や Exchange Program 太鼓 空手 …….次ページへ Moshi Moshi ….from previous page learning karate. Japanese language classes Since 2009, the EJCA has been offering Japanese languages courses three times a year, in the fall, winter and spring. Weekly two-hour classes are held for ten weeks each term at 3 levels. Approximately 20 to 25 EJCA members taks the courses with three instructors from the EJCA Culture Program. 3. 4. Japanese workshops, demonstrations, etc. The Culture Program organized 13 presentations to respond to requests. A list is on the next page. 5. Arrnagment of Japanese language tutors EJCA Culture Pragrams arranged Japanese lanaguage tutores for external requests fives times last year. The EJCA Culture Program is looking for Insructors and Assistants. Did you find anything you thought interesting in these programs? The EJCA Culture Program has been struggling to secure instructors and assistants to meet increasing demands for these programs. To be an instructor or an assistant, you do not have to speak Japanese except for Japanese language instructor’s positions. If you have exerience with any teaching position or have experience in Japanese culture, please join the Culture program team. Teaching Japanese language Interpretation and translation, Calligraphy, Flower arrangement, Tea ceremony, Japanese dance，dressing Japanese kimono, Origami, Story telling to children, Japanese cooking, Martial arts, Iintroducion of Japanese culture in general. Generally, we pay honoraria according to your exeriecne and time required. However, at times participation is considered volunteer work without pay. We have a list of insructors and use this list to responnd to requests. As of June 2015, there were 33 kindergarten students (Junior Kindergarten and Senior Kindergarten), 76 elementary students and 15 junior high school students. They study Japanese for 3 hours on Friday evenings at Richard Secord School renting from the Edmonton Public School board. With teachers’ support and parents volunteers, we have fun events such as Calligraphy class (for G1 to G9), Sports day in June, and Gakugeikai which is the class performance in November. All the students work hard on their homework every week, it is an enjoyable challenge and incentive because they are happy meeting their teachers’ expectations and they can also then be with their friends. Also, it is a great opportunity for the parents to make friends and share the useful information. There are 9 board members this year. The board members take their tasks very seriously to provide a fun and safe learning environment for the students, and the necessary support for the teachers and volunteers. Website: http://www.edmontonjapaneseschool.com/home 8 July - August 2015 補習後援会会長 ソイヤー久美子 EJCA 会員の皆様へ日本語補習校の紹介を いたします。 補習校には 2015 年 6 月の時点で幼稚科(年 中・年長組)33 名、小学校 76 名、中学校 15 名、合計 124 名の生徒 が在籍し、パブリックスクールのリチャードシーコード校を借りて、毎 週金曜日の夜に 3 時間、生徒に国語の指導をしています。 毎年 6 月には書道教室(幼稚科を除く)、ピクニック運動会、11 月に は学芸会が行われ、教師や保護者の協力のもと、楽しい行事も行 われています。 子供たちは補習校で日本語を学ぶこと以外にも、友達や先生に会う ことも大きな楽しみで、毎週出される宿題も頑張っています。親も補 習校という場を通し、交友関係を広げたり、たくさんの情報を共有し ています。2015 年度の役員会は 9 名で構成されています。役員会 としては今後も子供たちが楽しく安全に日本語が学べるよう、また、 先生やボランティアの方々のサポートにも力を入れ、学校運営に携 わっていきたいと思います。 付記：この学校は子供に日本語を教えたい親が集まって 1977 年に 創設されました。この学校は多くの生徒に広く門戸を開いています。 日本語の勉強に興味のある方は、こちらをご覧ください。 http://www.edmontonjapaneseschool.com/home Moshi Moshi Archives Are Now Available on the EJCA Website! History Project Yes, you can read all EJCA newsletters online from Volume 1 number 3 published in 1977 to the current issue! John and Lucy Takahashi kept all copies of Moshi Moshi except a few earlier ones and donated them to the History Project. Jim Hoyano kept more recent printed copies and soft copies that were published using computers. Takashi Ohki scanned all hard copies to a PDF format so that they could be available online. Finally, Sanae Ohki organized, resized and loaded to the EJCA Website. The link to the Moshi Moshi is under "About Us", "Newsletter" at www.ejca.org. Printed copies of the Moshi Moshi were stored in the History Project filing cabinet in the library if you prefer to read printed copies. Viewing these old Moshi Moshi issues gives you a very comprehensive history of EJCA and our community during the last 38 years. It is interesting to read about many events and activities in the past that many of us had forgotten about, and they bring back fond memories. It also reflects key Japanese Canadian events and activities such as the Japanese Canadian Centennial Festival in 1977, Redress in 1980s, EJCA Centre building activities in 1993/1994 and so on. The newsletters of the last 38 years totaled over 230 publications. Japanese sections were added in May 1978. The following editors of the Moshi Moshi put many hours of efforts into keeping the newsletter published for all these years! ＥＪＣＡセンターのオフィスに７月２９日まで置いていただけば幸いで す。袋に名前を書いておいてください、あとで「もしもし」でお礼をす るときに役立ちます。 July - August 2015 9 Moshi Moshi Stories of Our Seniors 2 – Chizuko Kimura The EJCA is very fortunate to have several members who have celebrated their 90th birthday and have a wealth of experience to share. Many remain active participants at various events and even continue to volunteer. Chizuko Kimura turned 90 last fall and spoke about her family history at a Matsu no Kai meeting in 2014. My name is Chizuko Kimura, born on November 28, 1924. I am the oldest child of Haru and Toyoichi Matsuno of Raymond, Alberta. I would like to begin by relating the history of my father who was born in Yamaguchi, Japan. In the early years of Japan’s history, numerous civil wars occurred. One was in Yamaguchi and the Upper Kyushu area where Lord Mori, the warlord, actively consolidated the foundations of later-day Yamaguchi. Dad’s grandfather, Jukichi, was one of Lord Mori’s samurai warriors. After Mori’s victory, he told his troop that if they would go with him to Edo, he would have honours conferred on them. Grandfather refused, saying he would prefer to live in the familiar area. In lieu, Lord Mori presented him with the surname “Matsuno”. These were the days when nobility had surnames while others were identified only by their first names. This is all well documented in the record book. Grandfather’s name is one of the 300 published names of distinguished people in Yamaguchi. His medal and two swords are kept by his grandson as part of the family treasure. Dad came to Canada in 1904. He worked as a houseboy at the Japanese Consulate to learn English. He worked at different jobs and managed to buy some property in Vancouver which he later lost due to an inability to pay taxes. He was among the first Japanese beet workers brought to Raymond by the Knight Sugar Company in 1909. By 1917, he saved enough money to purchase 640 acres of land in the ridge area which the Alberta government was selling at $1.00 per acre in order to get the land cultivated and settled. In time, he was able to buy more land. He was one of the original pioneers. Father married Haru from Shikoku in 1924 and began his family life, bringing eight children into the world of which I am the oldest. We were all raised on the farm, making our living growing grain. We grew vegetables for our food, kept chickens for eggs, some hogs for market and two or three cows to supply us with milk and butter. The children all took turns and helped at whatever they were capable of doing. The youngest child collected eggs from under the hens. We attended a one-room country school, with one teacher who taught grades one to nine. Some children were in a combined class depending on their capabilities and we all benefited from ‘eavesdropping’ while the teacher was teaching another class. …..cont to next page 10 July - August 2015 EJCA シニアー会員の物語 （２） チヅコ・キムラ 幸いにもＥＪＣＡには９０才の誕生日を既に迎えた会員が数人いて、 その豊富な経験を若い会員に伝えています。多くの方はまだまだ元 気にＥＪＣＡのいろいろな行事に参加し、またボランティアとして活動 しています。チヅコ・キムラさんは昨年の秋に９０才になりました。チ ヅコさんは２０１４年にＥＪＣＡのシニアーの会、松の会、で身の上話 をしました。下記の話はチヅコさんが自分で書いたものです。 私は 1924 年 11 月にアルバータ州レイモンドに住む松野とよいち・ はる夫妻の長女として生まれました。父は山口県生まれです。 中世の日本は各地で豪族の争いが続きました。毛利家による現在 の山口県と九州北部の制圧もその一つです。私の父の祖父、「じゅ うきち」は毛利家に仕える侍でした。毛利家の山口県地方の制圧の 後、毛利の殿様は「じゅうきち」などの家臣に殿様と一緒に江戸に行 けば、報奨を与えると言いましたが、「じゅうきち」は住み慣れた山口 の地を離れるのはいやだと江戸にいきませんでした。毛利の殿様は では「じゅうきち」に名字を与えようと、松野を名乗ることを許しました。 当時はごく一部の人しか、名字を持つことは許されませんでした。多 くの人は名前を日常に使っていました。これらのことは総て、文書に 残されています。実際、「松野じゅうきち」の名前は山口県の著名人 ３００人の中に入って記録されています。また「じゅうきち」の貰った 勲章や刀剣は「じゅんきち」の孫が家宝として保管しています。 私の父は１９０４年にカナダに来ました。日本の総領事館でハウス ボーイとして働いて英語を習いました。その後いろいろな仕事をして 貯金し、バンクーバーに家を買いました。この家は税金が払えなくな った時に手放しました。父はナイト砂糖会社が１９０９年にアルバー タ州レイモンドに連れてきた日系人の砂糖大根労働者の最初のグ ループの一人でした。１９１７年にいままでの貯金を使ってレイモンド 近くの丘陵地帯に６４０エーカーの土地をアルバータ政府から買い ました。アルバータ政府がこの土地の開拓を奨励するために１エー カー１ドルで売っていました。その後父は土地を買い足しました。父 はこの地方の開拓者の一人でした。 父は１９２４年に四国出身の「はる」と結婚し、家庭を作りました。八 人の子供に授かりました。私が第一子です。私たちは皆農家で育ち ました。穀物で生計を立てていましたが、家で使う野菜と卵をとる鶏 の世話をし、売りにだす豚も何匹か育て、また家で飲む牛乳とバタ ーのための乳牛も二、三頭飼育していました。子供達はなんでも出 来ることを手伝いました。一番小さな子供は卵を集めました。私たち 子供達皆は教室が一つしかない学校に行きました。一年生から中 学三年生までが一つの教室で一人の先生に教わりました。生徒の 中にはいくつかの学年を一緒にした授業を受ける子もいました。他 の学年を教えている先生の声が聞こえるので、いくつか学年の授業 を一緒に受けているようで生徒みんなの授業の役に立ちました。 私はこの学校で中学三年を終了して、近くの町の高校に進学しまし た。学校の近くに住む夫婦のために簡単な仕事もしました。高校修 了後、私はカルガリーに行き、教師になるための訓練を受けました。 一学期を終えると直ぐに教育実習生としての仕事に就き、田舎にあ る学校に行きました。実際に教えながら、教えることを勉強しました。 私が高校生だったときの楽しい思い出の一つに日本の通信教育が あります。ある日父は郵便局に立ち寄って日本の通信教育の教材 をいくつか受け取ってきました。私と兄弟の一人は教材を終了し、日 本に送って点数をつけて貰いました。これらの教材をとっておけばよ かったとおもいます。 …..次ページへ Moshi Moshi ….from previous page When I completed grade nine, I attended high-school in a nearby town and did light house-work for a couple who lived close to the school. After high school, I went to Calgary to attend the normal school for teacher training. After completing the term, we were offered a job as a practice teacher at a country school where we “learned by doing”. …..前ページより One of the fond memories of my senior grade school days was when dad came home from the post office with the correspondence course from Japan. My brother and I completed the necessary subjects and sent them back to be graded. I wish I had kept some of these books. 私は１９４６年にアルバータ州レッドワーター近くで農業をしていたジ ム・キムラと結婚し息子一人と娘二人に恵まれました。子供達はレッ ドワーター近くの小中高校に通いました。三人ともアルバータ大学を 卒業して専門職に就き、すでに退職しています。 Dad was a forward thinking Japanese man of that era, because he wished to ensure that his daughters were sufficiently educated to make it on their own if it was ever necessary when they went out into the world. In spite of the hard times during the depression years, the family managed to make ends meet and the children were encouraged to pursue their education. To that end, Dad was made happy when one became an RN and then an RN with a Masters’ degree, another veterinary Medicine/Entomology researcher and I, an educator. 子供を育て夫の手伝いをしながら、私は二千羽の七面鳥をひな鳥 から成鳥になるまで世話をしました。七面鳥はリバーデール鳥加工 場に売っていました。当時は動力機械を持っていませんでしたから、 作業は総て手作業でした。七面鳥の餌は大きなバケツに入れて手 で運びました。しかし、仕事だけの生活ではありませんでした。私た ちはレッドワーター・コミュニティー・クラブに参加し、近所の人を訪問 してカードゲームを楽しみ、戸外のバーベキューやチキンサパーに 行きました。私たちはレッドワーター・コミュニティー・クラブのただ一 組の日系人でしたが、他のメンバーと区別無く、行事に参加しました。 私は裁縫と庭の世話、ベーキングが好きです。農業フェアではベー キングで数々の賞をもらいました。一つの賞には「家庭の女王」と書 いてあります。エドモントンに来てからは陶芸をしています。 In 1946, I married Jim Kimura who farmed with his dad near Redwater, Alberta. We had 3 children, a son and two daughters who attended elementary and high school in Redwater. They graduated from the University of Alberta and worked in their respective professions until their retirement. While raising the children and helping my husband whenever required, I raised 2000 turkeys from poult (baby) to maturity, for market at the Lilydale Packing Plant. We did not have power in those days, so everything was done in the old fashioned way--carrying feed in large pails. But life was not all work. We joined the Redwater Community Club, visited neighbours to play canasta, helped with the pit-BBQ and the annual chicken supper. We were the only active Japanese family in the club and were treated as one of the group. I enjoyed sewing, gardening and baking for Agricultural Society Fairs in our area and won many prizes for my baking, one of which was a trophy which read “Queen of the Household”. Since I returned to Edmonton, I’ve been learning how to do pottery on the wheel. Although Chizuko modestly indicated that she learned how to use the potter’s wheel, she did not mention that she took up this hobby when she was 80 years old and is now a prolific potter who, a few years ago, sold her pottery at the EJCA Fall Bazaar and donated the proceeds to the Winnifred Stewart Association for the Mentally Handicapped. July - August 2015 11 Moshi Moshi Following the Path of Tea in Japan Chris Booth I was lucky enough to have lived in Yokohama for six years and during that time studied Japanese language, Chado (Tea Ceremony or the Way of the Tea), Kendo (Japanese fencing or the Way of the Sword), participated in Omikoshi festivals (Japanese portable shrine) and learned about many other parts of Japanese culture and history. Since moving to Edmonton almost five years ago I have missed Japan everyday. However, discovering EJCA events and clubs as well as Devonian Botanical Garden’s Kurimoto Japanese Garden and its festivals, has allowed us to make many friends and to get connected to the Japanese community here. I am now at a point where I am able to give a little more of my time to the things I love and hope to give back to the community as well. I have recently taken responsibility for our inventory of tea utensils for the Matsukaze Chanoyu Association as well as the new President of the Beginners Tea Ceremony Classes held at EJCA. As luck would have it, I was able to take an extended trip back to Japan with my family this spring and brushed up on my skills with my Ocha Sensei, visited other tea friends, and also performed and was a guest at some tea ceremonies. I really did what I love everyday. I also did LOTS of shopping!! I bought quite a lot of tea utensils for myself and also for the group. The biggest purchase was a Misonodana. This is used in the Ryurei style of tea ceremony which started about 140 years ago and uses seats instead of sitting on your knees in Seiza on Tatami mats.The reason for purchasing this large tea cabinet and table, finding three large boxes, and carefully packing them to ship by surface to Edmonton, is that they will help us to achieve a perfect style in our new expansion of the Ozawa Pavilion Tea House in the Kurimoto Japanese Garden. After a lot of hard work and planning, the new Ikoi No Ba (Rest hut) will be a compliment to the traditional Hiroma (a large tatami room) and Koma (a small 4.5 tatami room).This new room will allow us to offer a wider range of tea experiences as well as serve more guests and be wheelchairs accessible. We had hoped that his new building would be ready for this spring but due to some construction delays it may not be ready for the public this season, stay tuned! There is something delightful about putting your heart into serving someone wonderful Wagashi (Japanese sweets) and making a delicious bowl of tea for them. There is also something deeper in finding a peaceful moment to forget the outside world and spend time living in the moment. Expansion of the Ozawa Pavilion Teahouse at the Kurimoto Japanese Garden Launched Kelly Mulholland, Devonian Botanical Garden A new expansion to the Ozawa Pavilion Teahouse was officially launched during the Kurimoto Japanese Garden Spring Festival at the University of Alberta Devonian Botanic Garden on June 7, 2015. This became a special th event on the 25 anniversary of the garden. The “Ikoi no ba”, whose name was suggested by Matsukaze Chanoyu Association leader Naoko Kerr, is a cozy new structure, located adjacent to the existing teahouse and joined by a rear walkway. It features a spacious deck with a great view of the pond, pagoda and bridge in the Kurimoto Japanese Garden. On the inside are an intimate meeting space, a small but functional kitchen, washroom, storage and a space dedicated exclusively for safe keeping of the Chanoyu Association’s tea ceremony equipment. The large deck space will allow for more visitors to enjoy the very popular Japanese Tea Ceremonies that are offered four times a year at the Garden by the tea group’s volunteers, in a very pretty setting. With the limited capacity of the Ozawa Pavilion, tea ceremonies are sold out on a regular basis; the addition of the Ikoi no ba will help to satisfy the public’s desire to experience this important aspect of Japanese culture. The building was launched with a festive ribbon cutting on the deck of the Ikoi no ba and was attended by representatives from the University of Alberta, Friends of the Garden, Matsukaze Chanoyu Association, and EJCA. The Ikoi no ba was built after many years of fundraising efforts by the Friends of the Devonian Botanic Garden, and was supported by the Community Facilities Enhancement Program, Community Spirit Award, and the Alberta Lottery fund. The Ikoi no ba was designed by Junichi Hashimoto of Hartwig Architecture, who was also the architect of the Ozawa Pavilion. Finishing construction is still underway in the Ikoi no ba; the building is expected to be fully completed this year. The garden has been very popular since it was constructed 25 years ago. It is one of only a handful of Japanese gardens at this high latitude. It is famous for its authentic Japanese design and great care has been taken care of over these years to maintain its authentic design. Ikoi no ba Teahouse 栗本庭園 新築の茶室“憩いの場” July - August 2015 13 Moshi Moshi Kita no Taiko Goes to Las Vegas In June 2015, seven members of Kita No Taiko (KNT) th went to the 9 Almost Biennial North American Taiko Conference (NATC), usually held in California, but this year held in Nevada. Here are some thoughts from two members of KNT: Carley Okamura: The 2015 NATC was only my second conference, but having the past experience of the first in Los Angeles, I was able to appreciate the conference in Las Vegas differently than my teammates going for the first time. Basically, I was able to focus on what interested me the most, and was thus able to expand my knowledge. The most influential moments from this trip were the personal accounts from leaders in the North American taiko community. To have these trail-blazers share their experiences in a relaxed setting was really informative and special. I intentionally sought out discussion forums and talks whose focuses aligned with my interests women’s experience in taiko and leadership organization. To hear the stories from women, their experience with the art and their male co-drummers, from the earliest times of taiko in North America was really rewarding. Especially so was the talk given by Chieko Kojima, a member of a famous Japanese taiko group, Kodo, whose own experience with Japanese taiko beginning in the 1970’s was different again from her North American counterparts. Learning the experiences of one person is learning a chapter out of the large history of North American taiko. I felt enriched and a part of a great community at the NATC. I’m looking forward to the next chance to learn some more! Yukiko Isaka: On June 11-14, I attended NATC with fellow members of Kita no Taiko. It was the first taiko conference for me, and I had such a great time! Upon the arrival, I was overwhelmed, not only by the 40degree air in Las Vegas, but also by the feverish excitement of the conference atmosphere. We got to meet many other taiko group members from the US and Canada and heard their interesting stories. Everyone has a unique background, sometimes we, as taiko players, share the same types of problems; sometimes we have completely different situations. But there was one thing all of us had in common: love of taiko! It was such a wonderful feeling that you share one passion with over 600 people. Not to mention the amazing workshops lead by professional taiko players, I was inspired by oh-so-many fantastic taiko performances and by the people that I met there. I am so happy that I attended the conference and hope that I can contribute to my group, Kita no Taiko, using what I learned there. 14 July - August 2015 北の太鼓、ラスベガスへ North American Taiko Conference (NATC) は二年に一度、カ リフォルニア州で開催される太鼓の会議です。第９回の２０１５年は ネバダ州ラスベガスで行われ、６月に北の太鼓 (KNT) のメンバー七 名が参加しました。以下は参加したメンバーのうち二名の感想です。 カーリー・オカムラ ２０１５年の ＮＡＴＣ は私にとってまだ二度目の会議でしたが、今回 のラスベガスの会議が初めてのＫＮＴ メンバーと比べると、一度目 のロサンジェルスでの経験のおかげで、会議の価値をより深く理解 することができたと思います。基本的に私は自分の興味のある分野 に集中することができ、知識を深めることができました。 今回の旅行の中で最も印象に残ったのは、北アメリカの太鼓コミュ ニティのリーダー達じきじきの経験談です。太鼓界の草分け的存在 である彼らからリラックスした雰囲気の中で経験談を聞けたことは、 大変有益で貴重なものでした。私は太鼓界における女性の歴史と組 織のリーダーシップについて興味があるので、それに関するディスカ ッションやトークに重点的に参加しました。 北アメリカで太鼓の歴史が始まったころから活動している彼女達か ら、太鼓という芸術を通しての経験談、男性の太鼓メンバーとの関 わりについての話を聞けて、本当にＮＡＴＣに参加した甲斐がありま した。中でも、有名な日本の太鼓グループ、鼓童のメンバーである小 島千絵子さんの話を聞いて、1970 年代の日本の太鼓の歴史が始ま ったころは、北アメリカと比べて様々な点で違いがあったことが分か り、非常に印象に残りました。 一人の経験談を学ぶことは、北アメリカの太鼓の膨大な歴史の中か ら一つのチャプターを学ぶことと同じです。ＮＡＴＣ に参加して知識を 深めることができ、そして自分がこの太鼓コミュニティの一員である ことが認識できました。また次回、更にいろいろなことが学べる機会 を楽しみにしています。 井坂 由紀子 ６月１１日から１４日まで、ラスベガスで行われた North American Taiko Conference に北の太鼓のメンバーと一緒に参加してきま した。私にとっては初めての太鼓コンフェレンスで、たくさんの刺激を 受けてきました。 まず着いてすぐ、４２度のラスベガスの熱波だけではなく、会場に溢 れる熱気、太鼓への情熱に圧倒されました。コンフェレンスでは、ア メリカ、カナダで活動する様々なグループのメンバーにお会いし、い ろいろな話を聞くことができました。それぞれのグループの成り立ち や多様性を知って、共感したり、驚かされたりしましたが、コンフェレ ンスにいた人全員に一つだけ共通していたのは「みんな太鼓が大好 き」ということです。６００人を超える太鼓プレーヤーとこのような空間 を共有できて、本当に嬉しかったです。 プロの太鼓奏者によるワークショップはもちろんのこと、たくさんの素 晴らしい太鼓演奏を見る機会にも恵まれ、大変貴重な経験となりま した。ここで学んだこと、アイデア、人との出会いを今後のグループ の活動に生かしていきたいと思います Moshi Moshi Kita no Taiko members in Las Vegas VOLUNTEER AND DONOR APPRECIATION The EJCA Board would like to send its sincere thanks to all volunteers and donators.
