GGEC constitute a multidisciplinary general education program for University of Tsukuba (UT) graduates. 2. This program was initiated by a voluntary GGEC Working Group chaired by Professor Yoshihiro Shiraiwa of Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences, under the support of the university. 3. GGEC program is managed by Profs. Koji Nomura (Chairperson), Randeep Rakwal and Masataka Watanabe (Vice Chairpersons), and Y. Shiraiwa (Advisor), and Ms. Taiko Igarashi (Administrative Officer) along with a committee of educators/scientists from diverse disciplines at UT who work towards implementing and constantly improving the program. These scientists/educators are nationally and internationally recognized for their research and commitment to education. 4. GGEC program is funded by the University of Tsukuba. Goals 5. GGEC program aims to nurture intelligent professionals with proactive attitudes, management-oriented minds, integrity, and communication and socializing skills. 6. The courses are designed (and implemented in cooperation with faculties spread across various disciplines) to promote independent thinking, professionalism, and character building. Courses & Events 7. With the rapidly changing social and global needs, and keeping in mind the graduating student’s future prospects, the courses are offered under - 7 thrust areas, comprising 82 courses of which 13 are being taught in the English language. 8. These are – Life, Environment, Academic Integrity; Academic Management Skills; Distributing Information, Communication Skills; Retaining Internationalized Characters; Career Management; Intellectual Foundation Courses; and Mental and Physical Works. 9. To emphasize one important point of the GGEC program – the courses have been designed not only for Japanese students but also International students, especially the courses dealing with improving the Communication Skills – a critical factor in the rapidly globalizing world. 10. Graduate General Education Courses (GGEC) Program Office 大学院共通科目事務室 10 Tel: (+81) 029-853-5837 Email: [email protected] 私にとっての大学院共通科目とその意義 渡邉 祐太 (Yuta WATANABE) 生命環境科学研究科 生物科学専攻 （2013-2015） 大学院の2年間の間に大学院共通科目から複数の講義を受講しました。大学院の生活は言うまで もなく、それぞれの専門分野における研究が第一であると思いますが、大学院共通科目はともすれば 単調にもなりがちな大学院生活における 「潤い」になるのではないかと考えています。大学院での研 究生活では専門的な知識や技能を高めることができますが、他方では時間的にも研究活動の比重が 大きくなることで、 （たとえば理系であれば「毎日研究室に通って実験をする」など）生活が単調になり がちなのではないかと思います。それは自らの専門性を高めるという大学院生としての義務を果た しているとも言えます。こうした日々にちょっとした変化を与えてくれるのが、大学院共通科目の存在 だと思います。 自分の研究が第一である以上、その他の授業、いわゆる教養に対して割ける時間はそれほど多くあ りません。 しかし、大学院共通科目の授業の多くは集中授業であり、 さらにそれぞれの講義は大学院生 の知的好奇心を十分に満たしてくれるものであり、非常に密度の高い講義であると感じています。 たとえば私の受講した「国際環境問題と日本外交」では、地球環境問題全権大使として第一線でご 活躍の堀江正彦先生から、環境問題の持つ政治的側面についてご教授頂きました。また他にも大阪 大学、早稲田大学、東北大学と連携で開催された学際融合セミナーにおいて、同世代の学生と現代 社会の問題について白熱した議論を交わしたことも、今となっては非常に思い出深い経験です。 ここでご紹介した科目のように、大学院共通科目の授業はどれも質が高く、いずれも刺激的なもの ばかりです。前述の例のように、その分野の専門家と直接お話しできる機会を得られる点や、時には学 びを求めて大学から飛び出して行けるのも、 この大学院共通科目ならではの特徴であると思います。 専門教育を受ける我々大学院生に対して、良質な教養と知的刺激を提供してくれる授業、 それが大 学院共通科目であると思います。これからも、幅広い分野の多様な科目が高い水準で展開されてゆ くことを切に願います。 研究への誘い∼GGEC（大学院共通科目）で学んだ研究の基礎と応用∼ 長濱 和代 (Kazuyo NAGAHAMA) 生命環境科学研究科 環境科学専攻/ EDL 修士課程 修了 （2011−2013） 東京大学大学院 新領域創成科学研究科 自然環境学専攻 博士課程 在籍中 （2013−） GGEC(大学院共通科目)は、専攻科目とは別に、 自分の研究に必要な科目がいくつもありました。 個別に研究の指導を受けられる科目、英語のプレゼンテーションの指導、英語論文の書き方の講義な どです。特に北インドに研究フィールドをおく私にとって、最も恩恵を受けた科目は、 「国際インターン シップ(または国際研究プロジェクト)」でした。これは各院生の独創的計画において、大学から渡航支 援を受けることができます。さらに指導教官やGGECの先生方と相談しながら主体的に研究を進め たのち、報告書の作成によって、その内容が目的を達成できたかどうかを振り返ることができます。同 時に報告書の公開により、その内容と成果を広く知っていただくことができます。 （報告書は現在もイ ンターネットで閲覧可能です。 「海外渡航費支援採択者の公開報告書」で検索。） この渡航支援によって、私は修士1年の夏にインドに渡り、 ヒマラヤ山麓の麓にホームステイをして、 「森林パンチャーヤト」 という地域住民による森林管 理の制度を導入した村人たちに、半構造的インタビューをすることができました。修士2年の9月には筑波大で開催された日中韓学生フォーラムでベスト ポスター賞を獲得したこと、EDL（環境ディプロマティックリーダーの育成プログラム） に所属していたので、泣く泣く修士論文を英語で書いて提出したこ と、そして博士課程の学生として東大に進学したことなど、現在に至る経緯に関しては、振り返ればGGECの先生方のご指導の賜物であったといえます。 特にランディープ・ラクワル先生と事務の五十嵐さんには折にふれてお世話になり、心から感謝申し上げます。 現在は東京大学の博士課程に進学 して、北インドで森林パンチャーヤトの 研究を続けています。お世話になった TRANSLATION for NEWSPAPER 先生方や、GGECで専攻を超えて知り …..Kazuyo Nagahama who is pursuing (now graduated) Master’s 合った友人たちと現在も交流があり、 degree from Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences, 共同で研究できる内容については、国 Tsukuba University, Japan is on a tour of Uttarakhand to do research 際学会等で発表をしています。GGEC on Forest (Van) Panchayat. Hence, the course covering 3 days, two days at University and one day at INTEL Tsukuba, revealed its’ potential to generate interest and students were made to learn effective interpersonal communication, effective listening, effective one-on-one, and constructive confrontation, under the charismatic instructors (Ken and Shige) from INTEL KK Japan along with Randeep Rakwal (UT). These communication skills are useful when learners work at companies, social organizations, and at any place you work with people. I have been asked to write a message for the 2015 leaflet, and this is what I have to say to the graduate students. First, the GGEC program is designed for not only the Japanese but also the International students, who can also benefit from the increasing number of courses being offered in English by different instructors within and from outside the university Second, it is my belief that the any student can avail the opportunity of joining, listening, and learning from each course in either language enriching themselves by interacting with the instructors and other students from various disciplines, backgrounds and cultures. This will undoubtedly encourage “internationalization” and create openness and confidence among the students to interact / cooperate at the global stage, an essential qualification for the coming generation of global citizens. Third, the courses are designed with a thought to inculcate the qualities of independent thinking and professionalism, and character building. With all these, it is my hope that students obtain the necessary skills to enrich mind and body, and go out in this ever changing world with confidence as responsible, creative, and productive global citizens. DeMar TAYLOR (Life and Environmental Sciences) Effectively communicating results of scientific research is essential for progress in science. Often researchers struggle with getting their work published, but knowledge of basic rules and skills can help overcome some of these barriers. “Scientific Writing in English-Practice” is designed to provide knowledge of the basic rules and skills for writing a paper for publication in an English language scientific journal. This course focuses on the format of a scientific paper, preparing effective figures and tables, and grammatical rules for more effective writing. The course is highly informative because it discusses each aspect of writing a scientific paper. Kenichi MATSUI (Faculty of Life and Environmental Sciences) The past great innovators in the world were great ethicists. Nobel laureates like Bertrand Russell, Albert Einstein, Hideki Yukawa, Shinichiro Tomonaga, and Thomas Mann all actively championed the ethical use of science and advanced knowledge in the Cold War era. James Watson and Van Rensselaer Potter laid the foundation for contemporary biomedical ethics. Deep down, across disciplines, successful and sustainable innovation comes from one’s good intention to apply it for the good of society; and this “good” is something both applied and environmental ethics seek to clarify and refine. Matthew WOOD (Life and Environmental Sciences) The Graduate General Education Courses Program encourages graduate students to become versatile and multitalented individuals. With a large range of courses covering academic topics, personal skill development, and sports activities, the program is an excellent opportunity for students wishing to broaden their knowledge, skills and experience beyond the specifics of their own particular discipline. A number of GGEC courses cover communication skills—and for good reason. Good communication skills are generally considered a desirable, if not essential quality for success, whether in business, the government sector, or academia. English Presentation Practice is one such course, and aims to help students nurture the skills needed to plan and deliver an effective presentation. Whether presenting complex ideas, demonstrating the merits of a new plan, or motivating people to take action, well-developed speaking skills and a clear approach to planning will dramatically improve the chance of a successful outcome. Students in this course usually make great improvements in their presentation skills, and are often surprised by what they can achieve with a little care and effort. Martin POHL (Humanities and Social Sciences) Management embodies values such as individual responsibility, value of autonomy, and respect for the individual. Making work productive and managing social impact and social responsibilities - and doing that in a balance between the demands of today and of tomorrow – are things in which the public at large has a stake. It is management making mass higher education affordable. Multinational companies are among the few institutions that are not nationalistic in its world view, its values, and its decisions, but truly a common organ of a world economy that, so far, lacks a world policy. I have found a lot of innovative ideals from lectures, especially methods to appy them in the research method, anylitical thinking and even daily routine. The values of lectures not only be contributed in the classes but also continues to play their roles in the students’ further studies and real life. They have not just benefited infomation; they have changed my mind. Besides, the GGEC Program provides outdoor and interactive acticvities such as Intel company visiting and Lunch Chat Cafe. They are good oppotunities for me to observed Japanese working style and visit many people from various fields. I hope that the GGEC Program maintain and improve these classes to benefit many generation of students. Thank you so much for precious lectures and lecturers. 大学院共通科目を複数受講して、改めて筑波大学の良さを実感しました。と いうのも、１つのキャンパスに様々な学問領域に携わる先生と学生が集まって いる筑波大学であるからこそ実現できるのが大学院共通科目だからです。異な るバックグラウンドをもつ人々と繰り広げるディスカッションは刺激的で、大変 視野の広がるものでした。また、つくば市内の企業や研究所等と連携して行わ れている授業があるのも筑波大学ならではでしょう。この大学に入学していな ければ、このような魅力的な授業を受ける機会に恵まれていなかったかも知れ ません。大学院生として研究に没頭することも大事ですが、学際的な感覚や知 識を身につける場として、大学院共通科目を受講することを強く推奨します。 Rajeev Kumar SINGH (Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences) The Graduate General Education Courses Program provides opportunity to graduate students to take courses ranging from Applied Ethics, Research Management Skills, and Global Communication Practice to practical courses in Sports. I was very lucky to take few of the courses in during my Master’s and now Doctor’s program, including Applied Ethics and Global Communication Practice. Not only, these courses helped me improve my skills in reading and writing, but also enhanced my discussion ability in a given topic with relevant logic. The practice course also helped me greatly improve my presentation slides, time management and confidence to express myself during any presentation or even interviews. Moreover, I have been working as an Assistant Manager of City Chat Cafe for more than a year, primarily involved in recruiting new staffs through interviews, making pamphlets, etc., and general responsibility for all other activities related to smooth running of this unique Cafe. My time here has been fruitful helping me acquire leadership qualities, improve communication (with not only International and Japanese students but also with the Citizens of Tsukuba), and management skills. I am proud to be part of GGEC program at University of Tsukuba and recommend other students to join some of these courses. Thi Tam NGUYEN (Graduate School of Life and Environmental Sciences/EDL) I graduated Master’s program in 2014 and came back Vietnam for my research work in Institute of Resources and Environment, Hue University. I never ever forgot the time I studied in University of Tsukuba. Especially, I was impressed by both the courses (Applied Ethics, Research Management Skills) and also by activities in the GGEC program. I attended City Chat Cafe several times and found it so interesting. Talking with people from different countries and different cultures helped me to enjoy life more in Japan. This activity is really meaningful to me. I also joined in the Luncheon Chat program and had a chance to visit Intel Company in Tsukuba. That was a great opportunity to explore a large, modern company here. Those things I learnt and experienced gave me a valuable part, contributing to my current and future research work as well as my future life. Reka BOZSO (Department of Art and Design) Participating in the International Education and Learning Effective Communication and Presentation Skill Course (01ZZ313) was much more fun, than I expected it to be. I was expecting a regular lecture, but instead I received a highly practical course, where I had the chance to try everything we learnt through situational games, and we even had a chance to visit the offices of Intel. I have a slightly different field of studies (art theory), than media, communication or business, but the communicational techniques we learnt can be greatly useful for anyone from any kind of studies. The reason is that they help to deal with everyday life conflicts, work relationships and our human relations in our studies as well. Therefore I feel very lucky to have taken this course and to have had a chance to meet with some wonderful people, who helped me a lot, and with whom I plan to stay in contact for a very long time. I would like to encourage everyone to take this course, because it is truly interesting, practical, and useful. Not to mention that it is pure fun to emerge into conversations with people from so wide range of countries and cultures. 川口 美咲（生命環境科学研究科 環境バイオマス共生学専攻） 大学院共通科目では、大学の外に出て授業を行うこともあります。「先端科 学コミュニケーター・インターンシップ」は、大学の北に位置する高エネルギー 加速器研究機構において行いました。そこでは研究者の方にインタビューをさ せていただき、英語で署名記事を書く経験ができました。「実践型科学コミュ ニケーション・トレーニング」は、日本科学未来館で授業を行いました。来館 者の方と様々な話をすることでサイエンスコミュニケーションとは何かを深く考 え、皆で意見の交換をしました。大学の外に出ることで、いつもと違う、とて も貴重な経験をすることができたと感じます。大学院共通科目には興味がある 科目が必ずあると思うので、ぜひチャレンジしてみてください。 住吉 美奈子（生命環境科学研究科 生命共存科学専攻） 偏った取り方ではありましたが、私は大学院共通科目を修了までに10単位取 りました。大学院に進学した理由は人それぞれだとは思いますが、ここで学ん だことを活かして社会に巣立ちたい、悔いがないようにしたいという思いは誰 しも持っているのではないでしょうか。 大学院共通科目には様々な科目群があるので、自分を磨きたいとき、足りな いものを補いたいとき、時には好奇心の赴くままに授業を取れば、教養や、自 分の専門性を高めるものが身につけられます。 そして何より、授業がなければ行けない場所、学内外問わず様々な分野の講 師や学生仲間との出会いを通じて、学生生活をより深いものにできることが最 大の魅力です。 「JAPICアドバンストTAを終えて」 鈴木 光衛（システム情報工学研究科社会システム） TAという立場ではありますが、非常に内容の濃い、めったにできない貴重 な体験をさせていただきました。ありがとうございました。さて、講義の進め 方ですが、多くの見識をお持ちの先生方に講義をしていただくことで、多くの 知見・考え方・価値観が得られ、非常に良いものでした。様々な経験をお持ち の先生方の意見には重みがあり、学生には非常に刺激的な経験であったと考え ます。また、岩田先生は学生の積極性を大いに受け入れてくださる先生で、立 場に係らず接しやすい雰囲気を作ってくださり非常に密の濃い授業であったと 思います。しかし、本講義のスタイルは反面、問題もあるように感じます。そ れは、学生に積極性が求められるということです。この授業スタイルは大学院 授業の理想です。しかし、実際は周知の通り自分からの発言を控える受動的な 学生が多く（私の意見ですが、そうした環境は受験重視の中・高校の授業環境 の中で作り出されています。）、ゆえに、本講義では積極性があり向上意欲の高 く、問題意識を持った学生が集まっているように思います。それは反面、比較 的価値観の近い学生同士が集まる・講義には参加したいけれども積極性にかけ る学生が講義を取るのをためらう、という問題を引き起こしているように私は 考えます。その意味では最後の講義のようなグループワークは必ず発言しなけ ればいけない状況が生まれ、また、独りよがりにならずに他の学生の意見・価 値観も聞けるため非常に良い取組であったように感じます。また、グループワー クは意見を言いたいけれどもなかなか言い出せない学生にとっては絶好の機 会であると考えます。私の意見で恐縮ですが、前半は先生方に講義していただ き、後半は学生が発表（パワーポイント等）し、先生方の意見を頂くといった 形も一つ授業の形としてあるのではないかと考えます。 諸橋 香奈（生命環境科学研究科 生物科学専攻） 私は人前で話すことに苦手意識を持っていました。この苦手意識を克服 したいと思ったとき、自分で一歩踏み出すきっかけになったのが、大学院 共通科目の授業でした。私が受講した、Communication Skills Training では、実用的なコミュニケーションスキルを学ぶことができただけでなく、 失敗を恐れずにチャレンジしてみる精神を身につけることができました。 「出ない杭は腐る」授業の講師であるインテルの社員さんに言われた言 葉が今も心に残っています。変えたい自分がいて、そこに変えられる機会 があるなら、それを利用しない手は無いと思います。筑波大学にはその機 会があります。皆さんも一歩踏み出して、 「出る杭」になりましょう。 天久 朝恒（生命環境科学研究科 生物科学専攻） 大学院共通科目と専門科目との大きな違いは、様々な国籍の学生や教 員たちと多くのディスカッションができることだと思います。私が受講した 「Communication and Presentation Skill Course」では、インテルの 方々を講師として、実際の社会の場で効率的にコミュニケーションを行う ためのスキルを学びました。講義は学生が気軽に議論できる雰囲気で、ま た講義だけでなくケーススタディとして多くの実践を行いました。さらに、 集中授業のうちの１日はインテル本社において講義を行うなど貴重な経験 となりました。大学院共通科目は様々な体験ができるチャンスがあるため、 ぜひ受講してみてください。 13 “Applied Ethics” course provides unique perspectives to ethical principles by incorporating cultural and historical contexts of human rights and environmental concerns. Keywords are – research, environmental and medical ethics, animal rights and welfare, industrial risk management, and quality of life. “Introduction to Science and Technology Policy” course explains about the policies of the government as the title indicates. It gives examples of mega-projects, discusses research funding, innovation, women in science, work-life balance, and the importance of Masters and Doctor’s degrees in future science and society. Furthermore, the critical importance of global communication is highlighted. This character is found in Chinese Dictionary of Characters, the oldest Chinese character dictionary in existence. People used this character to indicate a spirit of accepting others for mutual assistance like a bird widely opens its wings. The character also appears in Shih-chi (Records of the Grand Historian) written by Sima Qian. No matter how perceptions change over time, we should not forget the spirit of the“Wing”.
