２０１５年御開帳
The Gokaicho Events continue with live
music, dance, and cultural displays. The
93rd Butto Hana-matsuri Festival will be
hosted on Tuesday, May 5 (Public Holiday) and the Shinonoi Lion Dance will be
hosted on Sunday, May 17.
御開帳のイベントはまだまだ続いていま
す！第９３回仏都花祭りは５月５日（火）に
開催され、篠ノ井しし舞は５月１７日（日）に開催されます。
17TH NAGANO MARATHON 第１７回長野マラソン
Despite the rain later in the day, many people came out to support the runners and enjoy
activities being hosted along the coarse and around the stadiums. Spectators were able to
enjoy learning about foreign countries and try new games and activities with Nagano Prefecture CIRs and ALTs, who hosted booths near the goal line. A big thank you to everyone who
came out and good work to all the runners!
雨が降ったにもかかわらず、大勢の人がランナーを応援したり、コース沿いや、スタジア
ム周辺のブースや演奏をエンジョイしに行きました。観客の方々は、ゴールの周辺にブー
スを開設した国際交流員（ＣＩＲ）及びＡＬＴと外
国のゲームやアクティビティをやりながら、外国の
ことを学ぶこのをエンジョイすることができまし
た。参加していただいた皆様ありがとうございまし
た！そして、ランナーの皆さんへお疲れ様でした！

THE STANDING AMITABHA STATUE 前立本尊
The original principal image has been kept hidden
from public view since 654,
and its “Sacred Replica,”
the standing Amitabha,
was made in the Kamakura
Period. The statue is put on
display for worshippers
once every seven years (six
years from the previous
Gokaicho Festival).

鎌倉時代に御本尊の御身代
わりとして「前立本尊」が
造られました。数え年で七
年に一度の御開帳の時だ
け、特別にお姿を拝むこと
が叶います。
Carrying the Replica of the Sacred Image into Zenkoji Temple 善光寺に前立本尊を担ぎています。

Togakushi Shrine will also be holding a series of events in conjunction with the Gokaicho
Festival. 御開帳 とともに戸隠神社も色々なイベントを開催します。

五月病：四月後、春うつ
April is a time of much change in Japan. The arrival of spring marks the beginning of
the new school year as well as the time when new graduates enter the work force. There
are also a large number of farewell and welcome parties as changes take place within
departments in companies and government offices.
Compared to America, there is a higher expectation to enter the workforce immediately
following graduation. In America, many people enter graduate school, travel, or if they
are uncertain about what profession they would like to enter, try their hand at a variety
of jobs. Switching jobs after a short period is not uncommon in America, but in Japan,
changing jobs after a year or so or having even a one-year gap between school and your
first job on your resume is still frowned upon. This can make it harder to become employed full-time later on.
Since April is such a busy time, many people develop May sickness, once the novelty of
new school or job life has worn off. This includes everything from feeling mildly depressed and irritated to refusing to go to work or school.
４月は色々変わる時期です。春になると新学期の始まりや新入社等の季節です。企業や官庁
の中の転勤で送別会及び歓迎会が多いです。
アメリカと比べたら、日本では卒業したらすぐに常勤したいという希望がより高いです。アメリカ
では、大学院になったり、ボランティアしたり、旅行したりするか、どんな仕事をしたいか分から
ない場合に色々な仕事をしてみます。仕事をあまり気に入らないとすぐ辞めることはおかしくな
いですが、日本では、一年間で仕事を辞めること又は大学卒業から就職までに、例え一年で
も、空いていることが履歴書にある事は、今だにあまり好まれません。フルタイムの仕事を見
つけるのはもっと難しくなります。
４月はこんなに忙しいので、新たな学校、や職場での新鮮な感覚が終わると五月病になる方
が多いです。５月病は軽いうつやイライラな気分がでることから学校又は仕事を休むに欠席に
なることを含みます。

に、保育園・幼稚園ではカート
を使って子供達を外に連れて行
きます。

young children can travel alone
to houses of friends and family
members.
In order to prevent traffic problems, schools in Tokyo do not
allow parents to drop children
off at school. Thus, students
must make their way on their
own; even first graders travel to
school without adults accompanying them.
小学生でも、一人で学校や親戚
の家に行く児童がいます。よく
児童たちは集団登校しています
が、日本では、一人で友達や親
戚の家に行けるほど安全です。
交通渋滞などにならないように、
東京の学校は親たちが子供達を
学校に連れて行くことを禁止しま
す。なので、生徒達は自分で学校
に行きます。小学校一年生でも、
大人の同伴なしで行きます。

GOLDEN WEEK ゴールデンウイーク
CHILDREN’S DAY
Children’s day is also the day of
the Japanese Boy's Festival called
tango-no-sekku. Families hang
carp streamers (koinobori)
outside of their house in hopes of
the healthy growth of their male
children. The different colors
stand for different members of the
family. The black carp (magoi)
represents the father, the red one
(higoi) the mother, and a blue or
pink one the child.
People enjoy a Japanese sweet
called Kashiwamochi. It is sticky
rice cake stuffed with sweet red or
white bean paste and wrapped in a
leaf from the Kashiwa Tree.

Golden Week is the week containing the national holidays Showa
Day, which celebrates the
Emperor’s Birthday on April 29th,
Constitution Memorial Day
(kenpou-kinen-bi) on May 3,
Greenery Day (midori-no-hi) on
May 4, and finally Children's Day
(kodomono-hi) on May 5.
Many Japanese people tend to take
off additional day in order to create
one week-long holiday. This makes
Golden Week one of the busiest
travel times of the year.

MOTHER’S DAY
Beginnings: Mother’s day took root in
America around the end of the 1880’s.
Mother’s day was first celebrated in
Japan in conjunction with Empress Kojun’s birthday
on May 6th. Following WWII the date was changed to
coincide with the second Sunday in May.

背景：アメリカでは、１８８０年代頃から流行ってきました。日本では、最初は香淳皇后の誕生日と同じ
の日、５月６日に祝いました。第２次世界大戦が終わってから５月の第２の日曜日に変更しました。
Traditions習慣:
Breakfast in Bed: Surprising mom with a meal in bed is commonly done by the children, generally with the help of the other parent.
子供達がサプライズで、お母さんにベッドの中で食事を食べられる様、用
意します。よく子供達だけで用意しますが、たいていは父親が手伝います。
Flowers: Although roses are one of the more commonly given flowers
for mother’s day, various types of flowers and bouquets are given.
花：だいたいあげる花はバラですが、色々な種類の花も渡します。
Cards: In America it is very common to buy or make Mother’s Day
cards.

御开账（开龛）活动
EGG CASSEROLE エッグ・キャセロール
I would often have this dish when my
family got together to celebrate Easter.
Eggs are symbolic of parenthood in Japan so this dish is also good for mother’s
day, too!
Ingredients:
9 eggs
3 cups milk
1 1/2 tsp. dry mustard
1 tsp. salt
3 slices white or wheat bread
1 1/2~2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
＊You can also add meat such as ham and vege-

牛乳

からし
１・1/2 小さじ
塩
１小さじ
ホワイト又は小麦パン ３枚
刻みチェダーチーズ
１・1/2～２カップ

DIRECTIONS
1. Cut bread into bite-size
cubes and put in 13 x 9 greased
pan.
2. Pour mixture over bread.
Bread rises to
the top when cooking.
3. Bake at 350F or 180C for 1
hour.
