尚博士の研究業績概要
中村博士は,地球気候システムの重要な構成要素である大気循環の形成・変動,その中での
多階層相互作用や海洋・海氷・陸面との相互作用に関して,数多くの業績を挙げてきた。そ
れらの代表的なものとして,以下の 3 つのテーマが挙げられる。
1) ストームトラックの形成・変動と大気大循環,海洋との相互作用に関する包括的研究
北太平洋においてジェットの傾圧性が高まる真冬に却って移動性高低気圧波が弱まるとい
う,既存理論では説明不能な季節変化の存在を明らかにし,傾圧不安定の研究に新たな展開
をもたらした[4]。更に,近年の亜熱帯ジェット(STJ)の弱化に伴って「真冬の擾乱振幅極小」
が消失傾向にある事を発見し[22],擾乱の頻繁な発達とそれによる「ストームトラック」の
形成には海洋亜寒帯前線に沿った地表傾圧帯と上空の擾乱の相互作用が不可欠であるが,真
冬に発達する STJ が導波管として擾乱を捕捉するとその相互作用が阻害される事を示した
[24]。この成果に基づき,従来純粋な気象力学の問題とされてきたストームトラックと附随
する中緯度偏西風の形成を,大気海洋結合の側面から捉え直す新しい大気大循環論を提唱し
[32],それを大気モデル実験で検証した[54,63]。また,この過程に本質的に重要な,大気
擾乱通過直後に活発化する海洋との熱交換を通じた南北気温差の急速な回復を「海洋傾圧調
節」過程と名付け,これがストームトラック形成に重要であることを数値モデル実験で検証
した[54,61,62,63,71]。これら一連の研究は画期的なものとして国際的にも注目されている。
2) 北太平洋大気海洋結合システムにおける 10 年規模変動の研究
北太平洋 10 年規模変動が熱帯太平洋からの遠隔影響に過ぎないとする定説を観測データの
再検証により覆し,アリューシャン低気圧(AL)と海洋亜寒帯循環系が絡む北太平洋独自の
10 年 規 模 変 動 が 卓 越 し , 水 温 偏 差 が 海 洋 亜 寒 帯 前 線 帯 に 集 中 す る 事 を 発 見 し た
[12,14,20,25]。また,海洋循環変動による前線帯の南北移動が生んだ海面水温偏差が大気
への熱供給を変える事を初めて明確に示し[27,44,56],これが移動性高低気圧の活動を変え,
そのフィードバックで AL 偏差が維持・強化される事を示した[27]。更に,渦解像モデル実
験から,海洋亜寒帯前線帯の複雑な 3 次元構造を明らかにし,表層で最も顕著な水温偏差を
もたらす親潮前線の南北変位が,AL 変動に伴う北西太平洋の局所的な海上風変動に敏感に
応答する事を明らかにした[44,56]。これらは 1)と共に中緯度大気海洋相互作用研究の新展
開として高い評価を得ている[67]。
3) 停滞性ブロッキング高気圧と付随する地上寒冷高気圧の形成機構の解明
まず,ブロッキング高気圧と移動性高低気圧波との相互作用という古典的枠組で,相互作用
の客観的診断法を開発し,多数の事例に基づく解析に初めて成功した [2, 5]。一方, 現在国
内外で広く利用されている停滞性ロスビー波の波束伝播診断法を開発し[13,18],古典理論
では説明不能であった夏季や冬季大陸上のブロッキング形成が,弱風域に入射した停滞性ロ
スビー波束の局所的砕波に因る事を見出した[7,10,11,16,28,33,36,50,57,65,66]。そして、
この過程で形成される上空のブロッキングが,オホーツク海高気圧やシベリア高気圧などの
地表寒冷高気圧を発達させる過程を初めて解明した[30,39,40,70]。これらはブロッキング
研究に新機軸を打出す成果として国際的に高く評価されている。
以上のように,中村博士は,解析的手法を駆使しつつ,気候システムの挙動メカニズムに
関する研究を幅広く行っている。また,学部生・大学院生の教育にも熱心で,既に 15 名の
修士号取得者,5 名の博士号取得者を輩出している。
