Each work in Kazuo Takiguchi’s “Untitled” series starts from a single slab
of clay about 5 mm thick. Everything about each work’s form—the plump
curves, sharp protrusions on the left and right, three rounded “legs”
projecting from the bottom, an undefined mouth at the top—is the organic
result of the act of working the clay. To the artist, the technique of itaokoshi
and the resulting forms are inseparable.
Takiguchi perceives clay not simply as a material for making ceramics,
but in terms of its deeper association with the earth. His works are forms
made to rise out of the ground, where clay originates, and instead of being
empty vessels are filled from within, hence their bulging contours.
When he was in his thirties, his manifold abstract forms had already
gained Takiguchi a reputation as a promising young ceramic artist with
many awards to his name, including the 1985 Japan Ceramic Art
Exhibition Foreign Minister’s Prize, 1986 Chunichi International Ceramics
Exhibition Semi-Grand Prize, 1989 Japan Ceramic Art Exhibition Prince
Chichibu Grand Prix Trophy, 1990 MOA Mokichi Okada Award
Exhibition Award of Excellence, and 1991 Gotoh Memorial Foundation
Cultural Award New Artist Award and Japan Ceramic Society Award.
During his time studying at the Royal College of Art in London, the
U.K. consequently primarily speaking English in his day-to-day life,
Takiguchi became conscious of the extent to which the Japanese language
shaped his thinking and creative activities, something he had taken for
granted until then. The fresh awareness that people “think in words” and
make artworks guided by that thinking later evolved into a series of unique
small-scale works, which take words as their point of departure. Prior to
these, Takiguchi embarked, as soon as he returned to Japan, on a series of
colorful vessels inscribed with words and free from conventional notions of
tableware. Creation of the series of small-scale works rooted in words
started in earnest with the 1999 Togei Zukan (lit. encyclopedia of ceramics)
series and 2000 Mono-jiten (lit. dictionary of objects) series. Takiguchi
freed himself from conventions of traditional ceramics not through
technique but by choosing words as his motif. The works are invariably
endearing and delightful, because they are born out of memories (words) in
the mind’s eye of the artist, which the works transmit to the viewer’s
memories (words).
In complete contrast to the word-based series are the group of “Untitled”
works, which originate in the exclusion of words from the work. The
abstract forms created out of muteness express the inner self, and portray
the artist’s state of mind. The word-based series of small works and their
untitled counterparts are inseparable, like two sides of a coin, unified by
the fact that muteness lies in the background of the former, while the latter
originates in the depths of muteness.
The abstract shapes comprising the “Untitled” series were originally
without surface decoration. As the series progressed, the artist experimented
with komon-like patterns and various decorations on the surface of the
vessels. The present exhibition includes an example of “marbling” resulting
organically from the process of building into shape clay produced by
kneading together two different types of earth. The dynamic mouth is
shaped as if ruptured by the pressure of air filling the vessel. The integration
of form and pattern represents a new development in Takiguchi’s oeuvre.
