I. INTRODUCTION
This morning, I’d like to show a video clip of a Skype job interview.
<< CLIP >>
I agree. Moms are great.
You may think that your mom didn’t look that busy, but her busiest time was probably when
we were little…before we could remember anything.
When we were new born, she took care of us 24 hours a day. When we were sick, she
stayed up all night to watch us.
We owe mothers a lot, don’t we?
The Bible refers to God as “the Father.” But since today is the Mother’s Day, I’d like to turn
your attention to a couple of passages on God the Mother.
The phrase “God the Mother” reminds me of the Christian feminist movement where feminist
people said, “Why does God has to be the Father, not the Mother? That is discrimination!”
Then they started addressing God as “the Mother” and even wrote some theological books on
the topic.
1
But that’s not what I mean when I said, “God the Mother.” It means mother-like
characteristics of God.
II.
But before getting into that, let’s talk about the difference between father and mother.
Of course there are many different types of fathers and mothers.
If we start sharing about our parents in this room, I’m sure we’ll notice that all fathers and
mothers are different.
But the general image is that fathers are somewhat strict and mothers are kind.
They both love their children, but generally, father’s love tend to come out in somewhat strict
or tough manner. They want their children to succeed in the world, so they try to train the
children to do what they need to do. Their love is very practical.
On the other hand, mother’s love is more gentle and kind. It’s more emotional than practical.
They just want to treat their precious children in a very precious way.
For example, when a child falls and scrape their knee, mother would run to the child and say,
“Are you alright? Are you hurt? Are you alive?” whereas fathers might say things like,
“You’re fine.”
2
Look at this picture.
It shows the difference very well.
The father throws a child into the air. I used to do that to our kids too.
Fathers know what they’re doing, so they’re not worried at all.
But sometimes the child is a little scared because they feel like they are up high.
But then when mothers see that, she gets so worried because she feels like this.
That’s the kind of difference between fathers and mothers. Maybe some of the differences
are simply between men and women.
And this morning we’d like to look at the “mother-like-characteristics” of God.
Protection
Psalm 91:4 says,
“He will cover you with His feathers,
and under His wings you will find refuge;
His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
God will cover you with His feathers…it’s an image like this.
3
When we go through the storms of life, God protects us like mother bird protects their chicks
or ducklings under her wing.
And when we find refuge under His wings, “His faithfulness” will be our shield.
So when we run to God and shelter under His wings, He will become our fortress and protect
us faithfully.
This is one of the characteristics of God the Mother: He protects us like mothers protect their
children.
But then why did those things happen to me?
Why didn’t God protect me when I really needed Him?
I hear this very often. These are very common questions.
Many people think, “I know God protects, but He didn’t when I needed the most.”
There are some explanations to that. One is because we didn’t hide under His wings.
Here it says, “under His wings you will find refuge.”
4
We think that God protects us all the time…and we expect Him to spread His wings and come
after us.
But think of the birds…have you ever seen a mother bird spread its wings and run after the
chicks or ducklings? I’ve never seen one…that would be too funny.
Usually, the mother bird spread its wings, and the chicks or ducklings run to it.
Right?
God will protect us no matter what we do…well, sometimes He might, but isn’t that too selfish
to expect things like that?
God is always waiting with His wings wide spread.
experience His protection.
And when we run to it…then we can
And being under God’s protection doesn’t mean nothing bad will happen.
When the chicks are under their mother’s wings, outside maybe raining, or maybe enemies
are looking for their meal.
Although it’s safe under the wings, it’s not the same as usual days where they could run
around and play, or dig the ground to find worms, or jump into the lake and swim around.
5
They had to stay still under the wings.
wanted.
It’s totally inconvenient. They couldn’t do what they
It was far from an ideal situation.
But they are protected.
That’s what it means to be protected under God’s wings.
Without God, I had to endure under the cold rain…all by myself.
I had to overcome every single challenge of life by my strength and by my knowledge…
If I do that, I would run out of energy, get exhausted very soon, and struggle to survive.
After all the world is a tough place to live.
But because God is with me, I’m not alone. I don’t have to struggle alone. God will work in
the situation where I have no control.
That’s why when I run to God and take refuge under His wings, I can rest and regain energy.
Maybe it’s still stormy outside.
But I can receive strength and take one step forward, and another, and another.
It’s like a crying child running to his mommy.
6
He fell, and scraped his knee…it hurts. But when he is held in his mommy’s arms, he will
calm down, stop crying, and sometimes even fall asleep.
His knee is still bleeding. It still hurts. But since he is in mommy’s arms, he’s relieved. He
regains energy.
“He will cover you with His feathers,
and under His wings you will find refuge;
His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.”
Now let’s move on to the next characteristics of God the Mother. Psalm 121:3-4 says,
“He will not let your foot slip –
He who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, He who watches over Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.”
He who watches over you will not slumber…I had never heard the word slumber…
So I looked up in the dictionary and it said, “to sleep lightly.” Come to think of it, yes, I have
heard the word, “slumber party.”
7
Anyways…so God will not sleep…or slumber. He is wide awake 24/7, watching over you.
In the video clip the guy said that mother’s job was 24 hours with no break.
Mothers are great…and we’ve had an incident which confirmed that.
When we lived in Canada, I think Hiro was 2 or 3 years old. He had this stomach flu, and
was not able to keep anything down.
So he was getting dehydrated, and in the middle the night, he had a seizure.
Of course we were sleeping, but Mariam jumped up and said, “I heard something.
Something’s going!” and ran out of the room.
Then she found Hiro having a seizure.
I’m telling you…we were sleeping. She was sleeping…and I was in a deep sleep. But
Mariam noticed and jumped up.
She was sleeping but not sleeping.
“Wow…”
I don’t know if that was mother nature…but I thought,
Am I the same way? Well, when we moved from Japan to America, we were in the plane,
Mariam had 6 weeks old Dustin over on that end, and I was with 14 months old Christopher
on this end. They had to split us so that we can both have oxygen mask and safety gear in
case of emergency.
8
Anyways…Christopher fell asleep. And then after a while, I fell asleep. Then…after a
while…I think…I woke up with the noise, “Bonk, オギャ~~~” Christopher fell from the seat
and started crying.
Fortunately no serious injuries…but you see…fathers fall asleep.
But mothers don’t! They look like they’re sleeping, but they’re not.
Now God the Mother does not sleep. It’s not like, she’s sleeping but not sleeping. She...
this is a bit awkward to call God ‘she’ but…She does not sleep at all. 24/7, 365 days a year,
God watches over us without sleeping or slumbering.
Some people are awake but their mind is not. But God is wide awake. He doesn’t even
blink!! Well, I don’t know that. But He watches over you…very carefully and closely.
It’s different from the safeguard watching over the entire swimming pool. They are serious
and careful, but when it comes to God, He is watching “YOU” not the entire earth.
God watches over you 24/7…what you’re doing, what you’re going through, what you’re
feeling, your joy, and your struggle…
He’s watching over everything…that’s a relief, isn’t it?
9
And one more characteristic of God the Mother is seen in Isaiah 49:15.
“Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
Though she may forget,
I will not forget you!”
Can a mother forget the baby she’s nursing? Can a mother forget a baby she’s given life to?
No way!
But even if…this impossible thing happens, I will not…never forget you, says God.
Mother-like love…actually it’s far more than the love of a mother.
I have to confess, we once forgot Dustin. He was still less than a year old, and it was
Sunday morning. We were running around to get ready for church, grab everything, put the
shoes on, load everything in the van, and then we left.
After about a minute, Mariam routinely looked back and said, “Everybody here?” Then she
said, “Where’s Dustin? Oh no…we forgot him!” So I made a quick U-Turn.
When we got home and opened the door, there he was, smiling in his car seat just inside the
door. We grabbed and loaded everything but Dustin. He was home alone.
10
But God never forgets you. No matter what happens, what you do, He will never, ever
forgets you. Even when we forget about Him, He will not forget about you.
God the Mother will always protect us in under His wings.
God the Mother never sleeps and watches over us.
God the Mother will never forget about us.
Since you were in your mother’s womb, He never got His eyes off of you, and His heart was
always focused on you, and His wings were always spread for you.
And when you run to Him, He will protect you like a mother bird protect its chicks.
Is this the kind of God you believe?
This is the God who created you, loves you, and gave His One and Only Son for you.
Mother’s Day...
On this Mother’s Day, as we thank our earthly mother, let’s thank this wonderful God and tell
Him that we love Him and we will follow Him.
