I would like to say a few words to commemorate the publication of the Sophia Research Guide (SRG) .
The SRG introduces the contents and results of various research projects undertaken at Sophia University to a wide audience, both on and off campus. This guide also explains the support system for these
projects. We encourage you to make use of this information.
Sophia University marks its 100th anniversary this year (2013). With this in mind, since 2001
we have aimed to become a internationally recognized university through our“Grand Layout”for
Renewal of Education, Research, and the Campus Facilities. Our primary objectives are to promote research that achieves world recognition, as well as to realize a global standard in education and research. Sophia Research Organization (SRO) was established in April 2005 with three
divisions: Research Institutes Division, Project Research Division, and Intra-University Research
Division. The Research Support Center (part of the Bureau of Academic Research and Information) was established as a department that provides support for research. We are now creating a
“Grand Layout 2.0”to serve as the plan for the next 10-15 years, further strengthening our research activities and the three-way collaboration among industry, academia, and the government.
Our university has three main missions: education, research, and contribution to society. We believe
that the spirit embodied in our educational objective,“Men and Women for Others, with Others”is central not only to the education of students, but also to our research activities and contribution to society
as well. The superior knowledge and scientific technology realized through the results of this research
will provide clues for solving present-day problems, thereby contributing to the development of society.
Through these efforts, we are certain that this spirit will become a reality.
In order to contribute to society by making use of knowledge and scientific technology attained from
university research activities, it goes without saying that promoting a three-way collaboration amongst
industry, academia, and the government is of the utmost importance. In recent years, Sophia University
has launched a large-scale liaison project with support from the government, and our Project Research
Division has been producing great results. The number of inventions has greatly increased as a result of
liaison projects and joint research with corporations. Sophia University is working to enhance its organization for the promotion of three-way collaboration among industry, academia, and the government, as
well as for the management and use of intellectual property. As part of this ongoing endeavor, we have
created and published the“Sophia University Research Outcome Report.”In the 2013 edition, we have
revised last year’s section on Science and Technology, and have added a section on Global Environmental Studies. We encourage those in the industry fields to make use of this Report.

Research at the university is an essential activity through which we provide
an excellent education to our students. It is also one of the activities in which
universities pursue the creation of social value, by contributing to improve the
future of society. In our increasingly competitive global society, universities
carry the task of creating new value for society through research activities.
The three-way collaboration among industry, academia, and the government
is one of the most crucial means to achieve this. Universities play a central role
in undertaking the kind of continuous research in basic areas of learning and
fundamental technologies, which is difficult for government organizations and
private enterprises to undertake on their own. In this way, the universities serve
to create new knowledge and to deepen the“knowledge bases”of society.
The University is a comprehensive institution with eight faculties and ten
graduate schools on a single campus. In April 2005 we created the Sophia
Research Organization (SRO) to promote interdisciplinary and organizational
research activities, which fully represents the character of the campus. At
the same time, our new Research Support Center began its operations.
This center is responsible for general research activity support, including
strengthening three-way collaboration among industry, academia, and the
government.
In 2005, we established a committee to ensure smooth collaboration and to
examine the inventions and intellectual property rights of the University; and
we added an adviser on intellectual property rights (for the purpose of
appropriately protecting and utilizing these rights) as well as a coordinator
for liaison with industry, academia and government to our staff. In 2012,
we published a Research Outcome Report (for Science and Technology)
that showcases the results of our latest science and technology research. In
the following year (2013), we added a Research Outcome Report for Global
Environmental Studies, providing information on a wide scale to society at
large. Also, the Sophia Science & Technology Liaison Office (SLO) was
established within an external support organization, the Sophia Science and
Technology Promotion Council (Sophia Sci-Tech), to match up industry and
government organizations with Sophia University researchers in the Science
and Technology departments.
The University is considering further development of its research support
system, including establishment of an“incubator”for support of technology
transfers, licensing, etc., and to promote commercialization and startups
from the University's research seeds. We are actively promoting development
through the industry-academia-government collaboration system, and are
striving to provide superior education for the next generation of researchers.

The Sophia Research Organization was established as part of the New Hoffman Plan for
development of the university’
s education and research programs in celebration of its 100th
anniversary in 2013. The SRO was established as an umbrella organization to oversee and
support collaborative research activities by members of the Sophia faculty. Building on the base
of the existing specialized research institutes and the university’
s program for intra-university
collaborative research, it has undertaken new initiatives to strengthen and coordinate research
activities and to support the training of younger scholars. To achieve these objectives, the
University is undertaking the following activities.
(1) Promotion of permanent research units whose research areas and agendas are related to
the founding spirit of the university and the traditional areas of strength in our educational
programs.
(2) Promotion of flexible, interdisciplinary and advanced research activities designed to meet
the changing needs of society.
(3) Efficient and effective use of research resources (human resources, budgets, space, and
others).
(4) Support of young researchers.
(5) Dissemination of research results within and outside the University.
The Sophia Research Organization has three research divisions: Research Institutes Division,
Project Research Division and Intra-University Research Division. Research activities are
carried out in individual research units which are established under each of the three divisions.
In 2013, there are 46 research units with approximately 500 affiliated researchers (including
researchers outside the University such as honorary researchers). The results of this widerange of collaborative research activity are of benefit to both the individual research scholar,
who receives support and encouragement for his/her own research agenda, and also to the
wider academic community and society.

This research division includes 10 research institutes with 373
researchers (as of July 1, 2013). In 2006 the SRO undertook a review of
all existing research institutes and designed a reorganization plan; that
plan will be fully implemented by the end of the 2009 academic year.
Many of the research institutes have been in operation for more than
30 years, and they have compiled important collections of research
materials and trained large numbers of scholars, as well as making
contributions to society through the sponsorship of public lectures and
other events. The budgets for research, acquisition of materials, and
staffing are covered by the university’
s general budget; at the same time,
institutes are encouraged to seek outside funding for special activities
and research projects.
Although each institute has its own mission statement and research
agenda, the institutes share a common commitment to achieving the
highest standards of research, and making their research results
available to both the international academic community and the public
at large. Research collections of all of the Institutes are open to scholars
from other universities. To achieve these common objectives, the
research institutes have agreed on the following activities:
(1) Promotion of joint research projects
(2) Hosting of lectures, seminars, symposia and the like
(3) Providing lectures for the public
(4) Collection and lending of materials in the relevant fields
(5) Publication of scholarly magazines and academic books
(6) Support of young researchers

Mission
The Institute of Global Concern (IGC) was established in April 2010 with a
mission to conduct research from a global perspective, on a range of issues that
threaten the dignity and solidarity of humans to provide opportunities for the
conscientization of students and the public through its research output, and to
engage in activities with an aim to realize another, better world. We thus hope
to renew and build on the traditions of“the Sophia school”that grapples with
the real problems of poverty and violence –“with Others”— in difference to the
naively“objectivist”and conformist tendencies of mainstream social science
today.
The IGC was built through the reorganization of the Institute for the Study of
Social Justice, which was originally founded in April 1981 and actively engaged
in refugee relief efforts. The IGC, thus, continues to oversee the running of the
Sophia Relief Service as well.
Principal activities
(1) Research on issues related to poverty and violence in the globalizing world.
(2) Conscientization activities through symposia, public seminars, and study
groups.
(3) Coordinate a variery of programs collaborating with students, such as study
tours on the Great East Japan Earthquake and the recovery in Tohoku
area, and activities of Sophia Social Action Network.
(4) Practical engagements to stand by the oppressed and to seek solidarity between communities and people, including the Sophia Relief Service activities.
(5) Collaboration with other institutes and groups to strengthen the social dimension of the university.
(6) Dissemination of research output and information through the internet and
publications.

University research in recent years depends not only on intrauniversity research funds but also, in conjunction with deepening links
with industry and government, more widely on funding from public
organizations and private sector foundations. The Project Research
Division provides support for research groups conducting research
activity with funds provided by such external organizations and
individuals. Units established as project research units may eventually
become the basis for new units in the Research Institutes Division.
To achieve these objectives, the Division provides the following forms of
support:
(1) Preparation of systems enabling cross-sectional and rapid
cooperation in research among internal and external researchers in
diverse specialties and fields
(2) Authorization of the use of the titles“Research Center”and
“Research Project”by units that are registered as project research
units under the SRO (see Note)
(3) Provision of project research room (see Note)
Note: When research funds of 10 million JPY or more for a year have been received from a
single external organization, the term“Research Center” can be used and the unit
may make an application for a “Project Research Room”.
The Project Research Division was established simultaneously with the
launch of Sophia Research Organization.
After a systematic preparatory period of about three years, activity offi
cially began in January 2008. As of July 2013, the Division has three
research centers.

The Nanotechnology Research Center was established in April 2008 as Sophia
University’
s core organization for nanotechnology research. Its present activity
centers on projects funded by KAKENHI“Grant-in-Aid for Specially Promoted
Research”(#24000013).
This center was established to further develop research on nanocolumns and
nanocrystals and their application to overcoming the challenging issues related
to nitride semiconductor lasers. Based on previous discoveries by members of
the project team, this center’
s research is directed to establishing fundamental
technologies for green-range semiconductor lasers and luminescence devices
with a full range of the three primary colors. The Center’
s research also
explores the solidstate properties of these nanocrystals, adding to fundamental
academic research on the nanocrystal effect. Reliable, low cost semiconductor
lasers have already been developed in blue and red emission ranges, but so
far efforts to develop green semiconductor lasers suitable for practical use
have not been successful. Successful development of such green-range lasers
will have immediate industrial application, since it will all allow for full-color
luminescence devices that can be used in many fields.

Contemporary Islamic regions share problems linked to history, religion,
politics, and economics. The Islamic Area Studies program sponsored by the
NIHU (National Institute for Humanities) commenced in 2006 as a network-type
research program. Its goal was to carry out a comprehensive study of these
problems, and Sophia University was nominated as one of its units. The Center
for Islamic Studies was established in order to promote this research project,
and it currently carries out joint research with other network units, such as
Waseda University (which serves as the headquarters of the program), the
University of Tokyo, Kyoto University, and To¯y¯o Bunko (the Oriental Library).
The Center for Islamic Studies is composed of research groups studying on
the theme of“Modern Experiences of Muslims and Their Networks”, and the
topics dealt with are as follows: (1) The Social Roles of Islamic Movements
Dissociated from Political Factions, (2) The Expansion and Development of
Popular Islam, (3) The Realities of the Islamic Networks that Link South-East
Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Meetings and conferences are periodically
held in order to discuss issues of mutual interest with researchers and
students from all over Japan, and international conferences are organized in
collaboration with other units.

The Sustainable Energy Research Center was established in August 2010 as
Sophia University’
s project research unit for clean energy science. Its present
activity centers on projects funded by grants from the New Energy and
Industrial Technology Department Organization (NEDO); Fuel Cell CuttingEdge Scientific Research Project (FY2010-2014) and Strategic Development
of PEFC Technologies for Practical Application / Comprehensive Research of
Novel Hydrocarbon Polymer Electrolytes with Innovative Functions (FY20102011).
Fuel cell technology is being strategically developed for the future establishment
of a hydrogen society. Fuel cell technology is an important technology and
there are great hopes that it will be able to simultaneously achieve the“Three
Es,”i.e., Earth environment, Energy security, and sustainable Economic growth.
In order to commercialize the fuel cell technology, it is crucial to understand
the basic mechanisms and to develop innovative materials. The purpose of this
project is to develop the model polymer electrolytes based on hydrocarbon
polymer materials and to investigate their electrochemical, mass transfer, and
chemical and mechanical stabilities in a condition close to polymer electrolyte
fuel cells. We focus on the following three-points according to the research
program.
1) Development of model materials for high temperature and/or low humidity
2) Analyses of mass transport in model materials
3) Development of extreme structures providing high mass transportation
This Center collaborates with researchers from the National Institute of
Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Japan Atomic Energy Agency,
and Tohoku University. Technology Research Association Fuel Cell CuttingEdge Research Center (FC-Cubic) was also established in 2010 to promote
cooperation between our research groups and businesses.

Sophia University has an annual budget to support intra-university
collaborative research projects. Once a year the university accepts
applications for intra-university collaborative proposals, and those
research groups, whose proposals are accepted become units under
this division. In 2013, the division included 33 units with 116 affi liated
researchers. The Division’
s total annual budget of 34 million JPY comes
out of the university’s general budget.
The“intra-university research”system supports interdisciplinary and
multidisciplinary scholarly research and seeks to raise the overall level of
research activity in the university. The system is designed to encourage
research interest among the faculty, facilitate personal exchange among
researchers, and provide seed money to initiate research projects
that will eventually seek outside funding. The intra-university research
division seeks to meet the following goals:
(1)純粋な学術研究のみならず、大学全体の政策的事項に係る
研究をも対象としている
(2)最長3年間の時限付きであるため、新しい課題への取り組み
が容易である
(3)研究者自身が比較的自由に研究課題を設定できる
(1) To provide research funding for projects that are of academic
interest, as well as to fund projects that will contribute to
improvement in university administration
(2) The maximum length of a research grant is for three years; since
new projects are selected every year, it is relatively easy for
researchers to design projects to meet specifi c academic and social
needs
(3) Researchers themselves have a great deal of freedom in choosing
research themes

While maintaining these“intra-university research”characteristics,
with a view to further stimulation of research activity, the SRO has
announced a reform of the system since 2009. The main features of the
reform are: (1) establishment of a set of themes that the university would
like to see researchers challenge; (2) greater stress on the incorporation
of younger researchers; (3) greater stress on the links between internal
funding and applications for external funding.

Sophia University’
s Central Library and Research Institutes were opened in 1984. The
Library includes a large general collection of use for research and education activities,
while the collections of the Research Institutes have created specialized collections
related to the research goals of each institute.
The library collection includes about 1,030,000 volumes and approximately 11,300 titles
of periodicals in the humanities, social sciences and science and technology; most of the
collection is shelved and available in open stacks. The library also provides study space
for users, with more than 1,900 seats including “learning commons”-multi-purpose
learning space. In response to the recent increase in digital media materials, the library
has established a collection of digital media including a database of reference books,
statistical materials and the like, as well as electronic journals. Users can search materials
and access digital materials from the library’

History
Monumenta Nipponica was founded in 1938, following the recommendation of the
Jesuit superior general that Sophia establish an international academic journal on
Japanese studies. As of 2012 it had published 194 issues in 67 volumes. Its purpose
remains as set out in the initial issue: to convey the cultural legacy of East Asia,
and particularly Japan, to an English-speaking audience and to provide a common
platform whereby scholars throughout the world with an interest in East Asia can
share the fruits of their research. One of the oldest English-language journals in
the field of East Asian studies, Monumenta Nipponica is sent out to subscribers,
including university libraries and research institutions, in 62 countries.
Activities
Monumenta Nipponica publishes articles in the fields of Japanese literature,
history, religion, art history, and thought; these have often included translations
of important Japanese source materials. Submitted by researchers based both
abroad and in Japan, all articles that appear have undergone a rigorous process
of peer review by specialists in the subject area. Each issue also carries from one
to two dozen reviews of books that have been written on Japan in English, French,
or German. Back issues from volume 1 on are available in digital form, with a fiveyear moving wall, through institutions subscribing to JSTOR (http://www.jstor.org/).
Starting from volume 60 (2005), new issues appear online at Project MUSE (http://
muse.jhu.edu/), based at Johns Hopkins University, almost simultaneously with the
publication of the printed journal.

The institute was established on October 1, 2009, as one of the centennial projects
of Sophia University, and in commemoration of the outstanding achievements of Dr.
Jun-ichi Nishizawa. Based on his research findings, the institute will lead research
in related fields of semiconductor electronics, basic electronics, and basic physical
properties and thereby fulfill its mission of contributing to the academic and cultural
development in Japan.
At the Semiconductor Research Institute, a study team of the researchers who
are playing important roles in semiconductor research and development in the
Faculty of Science and Technology has been pressing ahead with the pioneering
of a new field. We are currently supporting the Specially Promoted Research of
the Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research, entitled “Innovation of energy and
environment friendly devices by nanocrystal effect”. It is being led by Prof. Katsumi
Kishino (Department of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Faculty of Science
and Technology), the director of the Nanotechnology Research Center that was
set up as a Project Research Division. The nanocolumn, which forms the core of
this theme, is the new technology developed by Sophia University. Research is
progressing to overcome the technical problems facing nitride semiconductors
using the nanocrystal effect of the nanocolumn, with the objective of realizing
innovative devices that are both energy- and environmentally-friendly. Recently,
the monolithic integration of green- and orange-colored nanocolumn lightemitting diodes (LED) has been demonstrated using this new technology. The next
development will be to establish the fundamental technology for the new dimension
of nanocolumn LEDs of the type where all three primary colors are integrated
together, which ultimately aims at developing full-color image devices that can help
towards realizing a low-carbon society.

Mission
The Institute of Bioethics (SUIBE) was established in April 2010 based on
the Sophia University philosophy, namely“Christian humanism”and“human
dignity.”SUIBE is to develop and deepen research on bioethics, integrating the
academic fields of the human sciences, social sciences and natural sciences.
The study of bioethics was started in the U.S.A. The field developed in response
to the rapid development of advanced medical technology and has now come to
focus on problems in research on the human embryo, human substances, and
genome biology. However, bioethics also includes the study of more fundamental
ethical concerns related to the meaning of human life. SUIBE considers not only
the problems of medical science research and medical ethics, such issues as
mental health, reproductive technology, terminal care, and organ transplants, but
also medical welfare issues such as access to health care, protection and care of
children, the aged, and the disabled.
Activities
SUIBE holds a public symposium once a year, and sponsors research meetings
for its members, and works with Japanese and international partners to publish
research results and to make those results available to the general public, and to
offer advice for policy makers.

It is necessary to deepen the linkages between academia, government and industry in order to
facilitate the effective use by society of the results of university-based research. When we refer
to linkages between academic, government and industry, we are referring to the full-range of
relations which may include contract research, external collaborative research, and funding
donated by outside organizations to support the research of specific faculty members. The
results of such research are returned to society when the newly created knowledge, techniques
or know-how are used in creating new products or processes.
Both the university and private sector enterprises benefit from such linkages. By making such
linkages, private sector enterprises are able to save on time and resources, and increase the
efficiency of research development. As for the university, it is able to obtain research funds and
collaboration with researchers who share similar research interests. This collaboration is of
benefit to both private sector enterprises and to the university, and produces results that meet
the needs of both society and industry. For advancement of these linkages and realization of the
mutual needs of private sector enterprises and the University, Sophia University has created a
system that includes the following possibilities for collaboration.
External Collaborative Research
The University accepts outside researchers (external collaborative researchers) who work
together with members of our faculty. The necessary expenses (“external collaborative
research expenses”) are borne by the joint researchers (corporations and others).
Contract Research
Members of our faculty agree to undertake a specific research project under contract with an
outside organization. The costs of the research project (“contract research expenses”) are
borne by the organization proposing the contract.
Scholarship research donations and educational research expense donations
These are donations for the purpose of encouraging research and education. Following the
intent of the donors, the funds can be used to establish special lecture series, or can be
designated for use in pursuit of specified research themes, or by specified researchers.

The Japanese government has announced a national agenda for the promotion of science and
technology and universities have been assigned a central role in the creation, management and
application of new scientific knowledge. As members of society, universities have an important
role to play in increasing national competitiveness and stimulating economic growth through
their research activities in science and technology and the management of the intellectual
property created by such research activities.
On October 1, 2001, Sophia University established“Sophia University Regulations with regard
to new intellectual property.”These regulations defined the rights of individual researchers and
the university with regard to intellectual property created by members of the Sophia faculty in
the course of their research activities and established a committee to review new research and
potential patent applications. In cases where the university decides to make a patent application
in the name of the university, intellectual property rights are managed by the university. By
the end of the 2012 academic year, Sophia University had made applications for 77 domestic
patents and 34 international patents. And as of May 31, 2013, the university has 16 Japanese, 9
Foreign patents issued.

Sophia is one of the 13 universities selected in 2009 by the Japanese Ministry
of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) as a core
university for internationalization. This project, known as Global 30, is designed
to increase Japan’s presence in global education. Each of the 13 universities
has pledged to increase the number of international students they accept and
to send more Japanese students overseas to study. Sophia, as a pioneer in
English-medium education in Japan, has offered English-medium degrees since
1949. Under the Global 30, we will continue to develop our existing programs
in the Faculty of Liberal Arts, the Graduate School of Global Studies, and
the TESOL program, and establish new English-medium degree programs in
the Graduate School of Global Environmental Studies (2011), the Faculty of
Science and Technology (2012) and the Graduate Program in Science and
Technology(2013).
In addition to these new programs, Sophia began new initiatives in 2011,
working through its existing network of domestic and international Catholic
universities and other universities and organizations, to increase opportunities
for exchange and to develop new programs offering international internships
and volunteer programs. These new programs will attract the motivated
students from both inside and outside Japan, and will further enhance the
creation of a campus environment that will facilitate interactions among
Japanese and International students. Through these programs, Sophia aims
to educate young people with the knowledge, skills and initiative they need to
contribute to international society.

Office for Promotion of Gender Equality
In 20 09, as part of the advancement of science and technology,
Sophia University was selected to receive reserve funding“System
Reforms For the Support of Women Researchers: Model Businesses
Supporting Research by Women.”In January 2013, the project entitled
“Support Women Researchers in a Global Society,”conducted by Sophia
University for 3 years between 2009 and 2011, marked the first time that
a private university received an S “Special”
(
) evaluation. The Office for
Promotion of Gender Equality was established during the period of this
project on January 1, 2012. Based on our educational spirit of“Men and
Women for Others, with Others,”this Office is involved in creating an
environment where each and every student and faculty member can fully
realize their individuality and make the most of their abilities regardless of
gender.
In the future, through the activities of the Gender Equality Promotion
Committee, not only Sophia University but the entire Sophia School
Corporation will aim to achieve a more gender-balanced educational
and research environment through the following activities: (1) instilling
awareness of gender- equal participation; (2) supporting career
advancement, such as the global mentoring program; (3) supporting worklife balance; and (4) supporting education for next generation.
The activities of the Office for Promotion of Gender Equality not only
symbolize Sophia’s operating ideals, but also ensure diversity in learning
as well as quality of work, which enhances the vitality of Sophia School
Corporation as a whole.
