新世紀2年目となる平成14年、激変する国際情勢への対応や地球環境保
全への意識の高まり、情報通信をはじめとする技術革新の一層の進展など
を背景に、社会経済構造は世界的に変革期を迎え、すべての分野で地域や
既成組織の枠組みを超えた新たな取り組みが求められております。
このような環境に加え、私たちは高齢化社会や地域分権への対応、成長･
競争から成熟・共生への流れなど直面する課題に向き合い、お年寄りから
若者まで、男女の分け隔てなく、新しい価値観を持った市民社会をつくり
あげるため、
「秋田市新世紀プラン」
を指針に、市民と市政の協動により、日
本海新時代をリードする中核市秋田市の前進に向け力強く歩んでおります。
この冊子で紹介している市民の様々な表情や街の姿をとおし、進みゆく
秋田市の一端をご理解いただくとともに、
「しあわせを実感できるまち 秋
田市」
の息吹を、国内外に広くアピールしていきたいと思います。

Message from the Mayor
In 2002, the 2nd year of the new century, the world social-economic structure has entered a new period of revolution, with
new challenges that exceed our present framework, and a new tackling that exceeds the frame of present areas. With the
dynamically changing world situation, an upsurge of awareness of world environmental preservation, and technological
innovations arising from Information Technology, reorganization is required in every field.
In addition to such social environment, we have to face immediate concerns, such as, an aging society, the
decentralization of power, a new growth/competition to maturity/symbiosis process, and the development of a civil society
with new values irrespective of age or sex.
In order to resolve these concerns, we (Akita city) made a plan named the Akita New-Century Plan. With cooperation
from the city government and the citizens, we are srongly advancing Akita city in to a core city to lead the Japan Sea area.
From the city's scenery and the citizen's expressions introduced in this booklet, we would like you to see the progress at
Akita city, our domestically and internationally appealing Cultural City of Happiness, Green, and Health.

千秋公園表門 Omotemon - the main gate of the old castle in Senshu Park
Ieyasu Tokugawa cursed
Yoshinobu Satake, who was
the lord of Hitachi (present
Ibaragi prefecture), due to his
neutralism in the Sekigahara
War and then relegated him
to Akita in 1602. Yoshinobu
then built a castle in present
Senshu Park and restructured
the surrounding area as a
castle town so that samurai
and townspeople could live in
it has past 400 hundred years
since
Yoshinobu
was
relegated to Akita in 1602.
The castle town restructured
by Lord Satake's family has
become the prototype of Akita
city since then.

佐
竹
義
宣
は
、
秋田城跡
義宣が建てた城は久保田城と呼ばれ
ました。幕府に対する遠慮からか、財
政上の理由なのか、久保田城は天守閣
のない城でした。平成元年に市制100
周年を記念して復元された御隅櫓は、
城下の物見と兵器庫を兼ねた建物です。
The castle, built by Lord Yoshinobu Satake,
was named Kubota-jo. Because of hesitation
toward the shogunate or financial difficulty, this
castle did not have a tower. The Osumiyagura, rebuilt in cerebration of 100th
anniversary of municipalization, had been
used as a guard house and a weapon storage.

御出し書院跡
Senshu Park, which is
located in the city center,
contains the ruins of the
castle where the feudal
lord Satake and his family
usually resided to reign
over Akita for about 270
years. The moat for
defence and zigzag stone
stairways show that the
castle was also used as a
military facility in those
days. Now Senshu Park is
a place of recreation and
relaxation for the citizens
and a tourist attraction
during the seasonal
changes in the scenery.

As a leading project to revitalize the city center,
the regional redevelopment association and the

The shopping center of Akita city has been
hollowed out financially due to the emergence of
many large-scale suburban stores. In order to
regain financial vigor and face of the Capital City
of Akita prefecture, the city has been running
many new enterprises in the shopping center. The

The facilities will be a base for prosperity in the area
around the station. The complex will have public
facilities to support civic life, private facilities for
amusement, and an atrium for open space. We are
targeting to open the complex in the summer of 2004.

Station providing many terminals for

Uchimachi. The west side

Sotomachi is known for its

Under the starlit sky, many Kantos (bamboo poles hanging paper lanterns)
light up the summer in Akita and the countless paper lanterns sway in the
night sky in pray for bumper crops. The sound of the Japanese drums
rumbles along the ground and the lilting sound of the bamboo flutes swing.
The Kanto players shift the heavy Kantos from their palms, brows,
shoulders, and then to their waists, maintaining delicate balance.
The citizens of Akita city boast this splendid traditional feat to the world.

The line between Pusan, Korea and Akita supports
4 ships per week. The line between Poshest, Russia

Regular ferry service from Tsuruga Port to

In November 2002, Welfare Complex Facilities will
open in the Izumi area. The facilities will have a nursery
school for infants, provide mentally-disabled persons
with employment and run a life-assistance house for
the elderly who have anxiety living independently.
The facilities will also have a space for regional
exchange and the complex will be a place for citizens
to visit readily, chat, and study about welfare.
