三つのお願い
しばらく前、家族と一緒にジミー・カーター元大統領の教会を訪問しました。カーター元大統領は、長年ご自分の教会で聖書
のお話をしておられます。教会の駐車場に入る時、そして建物に入る時はシークレットサービスの方がいましたが、それ以外
は特に元大統領の教会だからといって特別なことはありません。駐車場にはアラスカ、カリフォルニア、ミネソタ州等米国全
土から集まった自動車が並んでいました。元大統領は礼拝堂に入っていらっしゃると気さくに参加者に「どこから来たのです
か。」と質問なさいました。その日は、韓国と日本とジャマイカからの参加者もいました。まず最近の中東情勢の話から始ま
り、カーターセンターが長年、水面下で平和のために動いていることが伝わってきました。それからご自分が大統領だった頃
のお話に移り、中国を訪問した時の、鄧小平氏とのディナーでの会話を紹介くださいました。上機嫌の国家主席は、「アメリ
カには大変お世話になっている、私にできることがあったら言ってほしい。」とおっしゃられたそうです。もしそこに側近の
人がいたら、米国の利益のためにこれをお願いしましょう、いや、あれを、とたくさんリクエストを出したことでしょう。と
ころがカーター氏は即座にこうお答えになりました。「一つ目、中国では聖書を禁じているそうですね。二つ目、中国では教
会で礼拝ができないそうですね。三つ目、中国では宣教師の入国が禁じられているそうですね。この三つを解禁にしてくれま
せんか。」この“三つのお願い”に少しびっくりなさったかもしれません。「一晩考えさせてくれたまえ。」と鄧小平氏は
おっしゃったそうです。次の日の朝、「最初の二つ、教会と聖書は解禁にしよう。三つ目の宣教師、これは無理だがね。」宣
教師を通して、どのような情報が入ってくるかを懸念なさったのでしょうし、歴史を振り返ると、「ノー。」とおっしゃる気
持ちはわかります。それにしても私が何より感動したのは、世界大国アメリカのリーダーがこのように一人のキリスト者とし
て発言なさられたことです。この日から中国は大きく変わり、今では数千万人のクリスチャンが中国にはいるそうです。教会
の日曜の礼拝もたくさんの人が集まっているそうです。世界のベストセラーである聖書を読み、神様に礼拝することができる
ようになったのは素晴らしいことだと思います。この日を境に歴史が変わりました。そして聖書講義をしてくださった大統領
は最後にこう結ばれました。「ここにいる皆さん、あなたがた一人一人が宣教師になってください。何も遠くの国に行く人を
ミッショナリーと呼ぶのではありません。職場の同僚、ご近所の人、家族に神様の愛と平和を広めることがミッショナリーの
仕事です。みなさんもどうぞご一緒この仕事をいたしましょう。」聖学院もミッショナリーによって創立されました。私たち
一人一人が次世代に愛と平和を伝えることができるよう、祈りつつ歩みたいと思います。

Three Wishes
A while back, my family visited President Carter’s church to hear him speak. There were Secret Service agents at the parking lot and entrance to the church, but otherwise, it seemed like a typical small-town church. The parking lot was already full of cars with tags from Alaska, California, Minnesota, New York, etc. that showed how far people drove to come to this church. President Carter started by asking us
where we were from. That Sunday, there were people from overseas, including Korea, Japan, and Jamaica. He started to talk about recent
events in the Middle East, and we learned how the Carter Center is involved in the peace making process behind the scenes when conflicts
arise in the world. Then President Carter talked about a memory of his from China. The Premier, Mr. Deng Xiaoping, asked him at the dinner table, “What can I do for you since America has been so nice to our country. I would like to repay the favor.” Mr. Carter’s response was
astounding. If he had time to discuss with his aids, they may have suggested other favors. However, his immediate response was: “First, I
hear in China, people cannot read the Bible. Can you change this? Second, I hear in China, people cannot go to churches to worship. Can
you change this, too? Finally, I hear the missionaries from overseas are not allowed to enter China. Can you change this?” The Chinese leader said, “Please give me one night to think about this.” Then the next morning, he answered that he would allow the first two wishes, but not
the third one. China is especially sensitive about foreign missionaries because of its history with colonialism, so we can understand his reluctance. However, I was truly moved by Mr. Carter’s three wishes, when he could have asked for any other wishes as the President of the
United States. That day, those two people together changed the course of history. Some sources say that there may be as many as 40 million
Christians in China today. Chinese churches are filled with people on Sundays. Chinese people are now free to read the Bible, the bestselling book in the world. At the end of the Sunday School, Mr. Carter challenged all of us who attended. “I challenge each of you to become a missionary. Missionaries do not have to go to faraway lands. You can be a missionary to your co-workers, family members, and
neighbors. Let us tell the good news and share the love of God and the peace of God around us.”
Seigakuin was founded by missionaries, and President Carter’s challenge is our mission. We prayerfully continue to share the
message of love and peace around us and with the next generation here at SAINTS.

デイケアライセンスを取り、2学期から手を
拭くたびに清潔なタオルを使うようになりまし
た。毎日出る山のようなタオルを洗濯し、畳まな
くてはいけません。そこで年長組の子どもたちに
手伝ってもらうことにしました。当然、おもしろ
がって畳むのは始めだけ。参加する子どもは徐々
に減りましたが、それでも3人の子どもは、毎
日、畳んでくれました。楽しそうに働いてくれる
姿に感心していましたが、後に私の感心は驚きに
変わりました。その作業がとても工夫されていた
のです。半分に折る、重ねる、並べる、箱に入れ
る、その一連の流れはよく考えられた工場のシス
テムのようで、リズムがあり面白さがありまし
た。それを全て自分たちで考え出し、きれいに箱
詰めできるように、単調な作業が面白くなるよう
に、日々、変化をつけ工夫を加えていました。
「学ぶ」というととかく読み書き計算をイメー
ジしてしまいますが、その段階にいくまでの土台
を作るのが幼児期なのです。幼稚園で学びたい、
社会性、自主性、創意工夫が毎日のタオルたたみ
に凝縮されていました。幼児の学びとは、遊びで
あり生活なのです。
将来、ものすごく緻密に考えられた、それで
いて面白い何かを発明してくれることでしょう。
The Towel-Folders at Work
私たちも作業にはコツがあるのよ！
Since receiving our daycare license at the end of 1st
Term, we’ve had to start using hand towels whenever we
wash our hands, and those towels need to be washed and
folded every day. We decided to have Peach Class help us
out. At first the children were excited by the new work, but
it didn’t take long for them to lose interest and wander off
to do other things. Day after day, the number of children
folding towels got smaller and smaller, but three little girls
remained. I was delighted to see these three continue happily folding away, but after a while, my delight turned to
surprise. As I watched them, I realized how much thought
they had put into their work. They would fold the towels in
half, stack them up, line them up, then put them into the
boxes, just like an assembly-line at a factory. It was the
rhythm of the work that helped them maintain their interest. They devised this plan entirely by themselves, and so
were able not only to put the towels away neatly each day,
but to make otherwise tedious work interesting and exciting.
Usually when we talk about “learning,” we mean
reading, writing, and arithmetic, but in Kindergarten, we’re
creating a steppingstone to those higher stages. The towel
folding in 2nd Term encompasses all of the things we want
the children to learn in Kindergarten: social skills and a
sense of responsibility, independence, creativity. For Kindergarten-age children, learning is play, and play is part of
their everyday life.

Have you ever tried to make a meal out of your
「始末の料理」を実践した事はありますか。料 cooking scraps? Does a plate of peeled potato skins, vege理を作る時に出る芋の皮、野菜屑、魚や肉の骨等 table scraps, and fish bones sound appetizing to you? It

私は以前、大根料理のコンテストに参加しまし
た。「大根と帆立貝のサラダ」を作りました。サ
ラダが本命でしたが、大根の皮が残ったので、つ
いでに「大根の皮の甘辛きんぴら」を作りまし
た。どちらが入賞したと思いますか？ついでのき
んぴらでした。このことは私に、始末のひらめき
には価値がある事を教えてくれました。
３年生はコンパスを使って書く正三角形と二等
辺三角形を学びました。色々な大きさで何回も書
いたので、三角形がたくさん出来ました。練習の
後は捨てても良かったのですが、ここで「始末の
学習」をし、ながいながい三角形の一本道を作り
ました。「クルクル道を回して。」「みんなの三
角形を集めて貼ってる。」「馬車を走らせた
い。」「もと長くつなげよう」「もっと三角形作
ろう。」子どもたちから価値あるひらめきが次々
に出て、良い学びの時となりました。

I once participated in a Daikon Radish cooking contest. For my main dish, I prepared a Radish and Sea Scallop
Salad. When I finished, though, I saw that I had some radish skins left over, so I decided to put them to some use
and make a Sweet and Sour Radish Skin Sauté. And which
one do you think won me the contest? That last-minute
tossed-together sauté. I learned a little something about
the value of last-minute inspiration that day.
The 3rd Graders learned to use their compasses to
draw equilateral and isosceles triangles this term. We practiced over and over, making triangles of all different sizes.
In the end, since those triangles were only for practice, it
would have been fine to throw them out, but I decided to
take the opportunity to teach them a little bit about lastminute inspiration, and so we used those triangle scraps to
make a giant Triangle Road. Once we got started, the kids
were practically overflowing with inspiration: “Let’s make
it a windy road!” “Let’s put everybody’s triangles on it!”
“What a nice place it would be to take a carriage ride!”
“Let’s make it even longer!” “Let’s make MORE triangles!” I
think it was a good lesson, in the end.

セント・マーティンズ校との交流
Exchange Program with St. Martin’s School
以前セインツがオグルソープ大学のキャンパスの南側の
校舎を借用していたころ、キャンパスの北に位置するセン
ト・マーティンズ校と姉妹校として様々交流を続けてきま
した。今は校舎が、車で15分程離れていますが、一年に一
回交流プログラムを行っています。セント・マーティンズ
の児童がセインツにきて日本の学校体験をし、その間、セ
インツの児童がセント・マーティンズ校のスクールバスに
乗せてもらって先方に行き、アメリカの学校体験をさせて
もらうのです。
セント・マーティンズ校の児童は、まずお辞儀の仕方か
ら学び、「たって」「すわって」「あるいて」等、日本語
でTPR(トータル・フィジカル・リスポンス)を駆使した日本
語授業に参加します。この三つの「て」フォームをマス
ターすると、椅子取りゲームも日本語でできるようになり
ます。日本語で数を1から5まで学んだあとはすぐに、日本
語で足し算引き算も勉強します。さて、そのあとが本番で
す。日本語の授業にセインツのお世話係（アンバセダー）
と一緒に参加し、琴を聞いたり、歌を歌ったり、折り紙を
したりと体験授業が続きます。その間セインツの児童は、
人なつっこいアメリカ人の児童から英語で質問攻めにあい
つつ、カフェテリアでは自分で好きなメニューを選ぶ体験
もさせてもらいます。
プログラム終了後の両校の子ども達の表情は満足感にあ
ふれ、ちょっぴり賢くなり大人になったように見えます。
世界は多様な文化からなっているということを自分の五感
を使って学んできたのですから。
When SAINTS was located on the campus of Oglethorpe University, our school and St. Martin’s school did some programs together as they were very nearby. Even though our schools are
about 15 min. away from each other now, we still do a fun exchange program once a year. St. Martin’s students come to visit
our school to experience Japanese culture and Japanese school
life, and our students get on their school bus and go to visit St.
Martin’s to experience an American elementary school life.

At SAINTS, St. Martin’s students learn how to bow properly at
the start of Japanese class. Then they learn to give orders to
each other in Japanese such as “Stand up!” “Sit down!”
“Walk!” The use of TPR (Total Physical Response) allows students who have never studied the language before to enjoy
using it in just 15 min. By the time they master these three
commands, they are ready to play Musical Chairs in Japanese. They also learn numbers and then move on to do Japanese Math. The SAINTS students, whom we call “Ambassadors”
also help the St. Martin’s students in Japanese Music and Art
class. Over at St. Martin’s, our Japanese students are usually
surrounded by inquisitive and friendly American students who
ask one question after another. At lunch time, they get to experience choosing their own lunch, which sometimes poses a challenge as they have never had to make such a difficult choice
before! At the end of the program both groups of students are
satisfied, wiser, and more mature having experienced firsthand
that the world is full of diversity!

“Milk: The Shape-Shifter”

Milk takes on different forms in many different
kinds of food.
First, there’s heavy cream. If you let milk sit
out for a little while, it starts to get thick on top.
If you take just that thick part and stir it around,
you get cream!
Next up is butter. You make butter by beating
heavy cream.
Then there’s cheese. If you put certain enzymes
in milk, it clumps together like pudding. If you
cut this clumpy milk into little pieces and heat
them up slowly, they shrink. Collect all these
little pieces and let a weight sit on top of them,
and they clump back together to make cheese.
Finally, we have yogurt. Add certain bacteria to
milk, and there you have it.
As you can see, people have thought up a lot of
different ways to eat milk. It is a true shapeshifter.

“Super Swimmer Mao,” by Soma Iwaki, 2nd Grade
The thing that my friend Mao does best is swimming. When I asked her which stroke is her
best stroke, she told me, “the breaststroke and the crawl.” She can even swim 12 meters. She tells
me that she got so good because she’s been taking lessons ever since she was four years old.
Mao has other strong points besides swimming, too. In my opinion, Mao is very kind. The reason is that I once saw her do something nice for somebody else. I want to try and become as kind as
Mao.
In English Class, the 6th Graders wrote, designed, edited, and
published their own literary magazine. As you could probably
guess from the picture at right, the theme they selected was
sci-fi/fantasy.

SAINTS parents have been working so hard
to help improve our school, and the children
appreciate both the visible and the not-sovisible differences that they make. One day
when the students saw a new computer station in one of the classrooms, I heard them
shouting, “Thank you, mom!!” When the parents prepared a special fundraising event featuring a Story Teller from Japan, both parents
and children were able to relax and reflect.
